So India is the only country with hypersonic cruise missile.

And it is a ram-jet, from the looks of it?
Yes.

Although it is an Indo-Russian joint venture, the Russians do not use BrahMos. The Russian Navy might acquire some.

Yes, it is ramjet, based on Yakhont.

Sir in the current version, it is supersonic (3 mech). The hypersonic version is under development. Russia has different missile, Yakhont.

Kunal,

So a battary would have only four launchers that would be less. If the NE has one regiment ( I suppose three battaries) then those could be deployed covering three distinct areas or avenues. That is absolutely insufficient as Brahmos would be able to cover only points and not areas. With present range the Brahmos may not be able to cover forward aitfields also! only a few assembly areas in depth, missile positions and dumps.

On western front it would be able to cover almost every thing. Tibet has lot of depth for which a range of 1000 km would be required to neutralise misslie sites and depth airfields.

Of course premise is 290 m range.

BrahMos hands over Second regiment to Army

BrahMos hands over Second regiment to Army

HYDERABAD, NOV. 9:

BrahMos Aerospace, the Indo-Russian joint venture missile developer, handed over a battery of critical systems of the army version of the Brahmos cruise missile to the Indian Army on Wednesday.

Termed the second regiment, the Army received ground systems with mobile launchers, command post, replenishment systems, fire control with sophisticated electronic hardware and software and with multiple communication system
s from Mr M.M. Pallam Raju, Minister of State for Defence.

A regiment consists of a group of systems, including missiles and specially trained troops to operate and launch them. The first regiment was raised in 2007 and made operational in 2008
.

Handing over the regiment to Lieutenant General Vinod Nayanar, Director General, Artillery, at a function, Mr Pallam Raju said the versatile BrahMos system, available in multiple versions, was being delivered ahead of schedule. He urged the industry to go ahead in a big way in producing these systems as the requirement of the Indian armed forces is large.

Lt Nayanar said BrahMos, due to its versatility and user-friendliness, has emerged as the most reliable system for the armed forces. "We have guns for near range and Smerch Rockets for range of 75 km. But beyond that BrahMos is the only system which has added tremendous fire power capability to our forces for targets as deep as 300 km."

The CEO of BrahMos Aerospace, Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, said "We have formed a missile-industry complex with a network of public and private sector industries who are producing four versions of the missiles to meet the demand of all the three Services."

BrahMos attains supersonic speed of Mach 2.8 all through its 290km range, precision of near zero circular error probability and devastating power. It has emerged as the world leader in cruise missile technology and the preferred first strike weapon of the armed forces, he added.

the news was that there will be 3 regiments in army on the basis of orders by the operators. it didnt said they joined it. the joining is going on and we can see that the second regiment is now commissioned. media when rights about the previous projects assumes that they are already completed and donot care to find out what is the progress of the same, this makes it report BS.

BrahMos Aerospace Has $5-Billion Order Book

Having demonstrated its awesome firepower on land and sea targets, Brahmos the supersonic cruise missile is all set to be tested in tough sub-sea environment as well as launched from an aircraft in 2012.

A product of Indo-Russian joint venture, Brahmos missile has hit the target 24 out of 25 times, powering its way as the most destructive weapon in the Indian Army's armoury up to 300 km range. The missile reaches 2.8 mach speed (mach is speed of sound) as it inflicts heavy damage on enemy targets.

The Brahmos version that can be launched from a submarine or fired from an aircraft being developed by the BrahMos Aerospace company will be tested beginning early 2012, said Mr Sivathanu Pillai, Chief Executive Officer.

BrahMos Aerospace, which is a consortia of industry and labs from both India and Russia has completed 10 years. It was launched with a $300-million development fund created by the two countries. The efforts of the joint venture have resulted in the induction of the land and sea version into the Army and Navy.

The company is sitting pretty with an order book of $5 billion from the Indian armed forces. "We have an option of exporting the missile, but have refrained though there are enquiries as the domestic demand is very huge," Mr Pillai told Business Line here.

In the coming year, development work on the hypersonic version with speeds of Mach 7 will be initiated. The necessary efforts from both the Indian and Russian scientific and industrial establishments is on, he said.

The Indian Army has already raised two regiments, which are equipped with the missile and have the capability to use it in a war situation. The third regiment is expected to be ready in 2013, he said.

it is good record, may be one of the test failed because of the GPS data problem. This also give idea as to how many they made.

$5 billion... That is an insane backlog for one weapon. Why aren't they pumping them out?
