Croatia Buys US Bradley IFV – History and War (wordpress.com)

Two days ago, Prime Minister Plenković confirmed that Croatia will accept the US offer and buy Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles. This was confirmed yesterday, with a fast-tracked procedure to answer the United States with all necessary documents.

Yesterday morning, before the Government session, session of the Parliamentary Defense Committee was held. There was only one topic of discussion: procurement of Bradley IFV’s. This session was in fact merely a formality. Under normal procedure, Committee should have given an opinion before the procurement was decided, but Bradley procurement had been decided on previous week (21st January).

In line with MORH’s (Croatian Ministry of Defense) new habit of classifying everything and anything, the meeting was held behind the closed doors, as was the meeting for Rafale procurement. This means that no oversight was possible, potentially turning Croatian Ministry of Defense into Croatian Ministry of Malpractice.

After the two hours’ session, president of the Committee Franko Vidović and Minister of Defense Mario Banožić decided to buy Bradley M2A2. United States will donate 51,1 million USD, while Croatia will pay 145 million USD over several years, for total of 196 million USD. This way, US will be donating 11 million USD more than what was originally agreed, and this money will be used for modernization of vehicles, to be done in Đuro Đaković which is to become main center for Bradley maintenance in the Southeast Europe. Procurement will include 62 operational vehicles and 5 training vehicles. Greatest risk are spare parts and maintenance, and so decision was made to increase number of vehicles slated for cannibalization from 17 to 22.

First rate, to be paid in 2022., is 25 million USD.

Germany announced the refusal to purchase Puma infantry fighting vehicles. Instead, the NATO Rapid Response Force will use the Marder infantry fighting vehicle. As it turned out, all 18 German Puma infantry fighting vehicles, which are in service with the 37th brigade, were out of order due to problems with electronics. The breakdown occurred over eight days of NATO Rapid Response Force exercises. They knew about the problems of armored vehicles, but no one thought that they would be so massive. The problems with the electronics escalated after the machines were given an excessive load. BMP "Marder" entered service with Germany in 2015 in the amount of 350 pieces. The vehicle is armed with a 30 mm MK 30-2/AVM automatic cannon, a 5.56 mm MG4 machine gun and a 76 mm grenade launcher.
