As I said sometime ago I think India should export the Arjun to Taiwan. Which, has a vast fleet of Heavy M-60 Tanks that desperately need to be replaced. I would add it would be in the National Interests of India, US, Japan, South Korea, Australia and of course Taiwan. To name just a few......:cowboy:

DRDO has decided to accept the Army's position that the Arjun is unnecessarily heavy and they need a lighter tank instead.

It's for the Punjab region only where they said the tank will not be suitable for the bridges. Solution is also given for that in the form of iron bridges made by DRDO

Not just for bridges. Saraswat was talking about how the greater weight of the Arjun affects its mobility compared to the lighter tanks the IA uses.

There is nothing that can't be worked with. Logistics can be developed/managed

During war, there are weapons which work and weapons which won't work.

There are somethings the user itself wouldn't want to work with because there are greater chances such systems would fall into the latter category.

It won't be DRDO Chief's head which will roll for failure in a war, it will be the Generals'.

This has happened in the past, this will happen in the future too.

Tank is more of a system rather than a stand alone plateform. One requires BLT. Recovery, ARV, Roads, Ramps, Rail, national transportation systems, Bridges, obstacles in defences to support that system. Or, change all those elements to support the tank.

Regarding Bridges :

Its is an Issue that these Canals near border or separate from main roads can only take BMP weight,Those bridges cannot take more than 40tons at max, DRDO bridges will not only benefit Arjun but also those of T-90S and T-72M1 as it is not mention about as these are not DRDO made..

====================

Regarding Other Points :

In the link it is state clearly Arjun preform better and expected than T-90S in mobility and accuracy so does Army says the same, above that Indian Army already using Arjun in mass loge-tic chain is already made, Arjun are transported only by trains and Roads just like other MBTs, It can be also airlifted when C-17s will be operational.

In case one doubt above points, Please do ask..

It is not only the state of Bridges existing on canals.

More important than that is the clssification of the Bridging equipement The Indian Army would be holding...

Just to induct one tank how can you change the entire associated equipment ? The cost would be phenomanal...

If the ARJUn is already too heavy,

Then why did the army asked for even more weight increasing mk-2 upgrades?

The weight of ARJUN is there for a purpose like any other western MBT which pulverized the T series in all the previous wars( no one made any fuss over their weight when they were operating in third world countries.)

What was the weight of the Centurions operated in india during the 60s?
Who will carry the 50 plus ton FMBT on 40 ton class bridge?

When T-90 cooks off with ammo due to ammo lying on the tank floor , it is not the generals heads but the country's honour that is in line.

All future tanks of the Indian army are going to be heavy , they will never be on the same weight class of the dated t series tanks which will blow of in ammo cook off the moment a fire starts inside even from a mine explosion below.

is this forever acceptable to the Indian Army?

Also what if the chinese build a heavy tank like the ARJUN and sell it to PAK in future? Will the Indian army face them with t-90 like light weight tanks?

Even the Russian MBTs are continuously increasing in weight. So it is wise to make the support investment once and reap the huge tactical benefits of improved crew survival and a sure fire battle victory chances than counting costs.

Close to 60000 crores are going to be spent on new mountain division along the chinese border .So what is wrong in investing in critical tank support infrastructure?

it is just not one tank. All Indian tanks are going to be heavy only in the future..

Also in future if higher calibers like 140 plus mm guns are introduced , we sure will need heavy tanks and support structures for them.

i hav read that the pressure created by Arjuns is actually lesser than that of T-90S, because the weight is distributed in a larger area.
the actual no. r also published(probably read it in the broadsword blog).
so i don't understand why do they keep complaining abt Arjun's weight.

Do you guys how many tanks we will need in Rajasthan and Gujarat

Why should Arjun be deployed everywhere

T 90 and the lighter T 72 will be most useful in Punjab and Jammu sectors
and in Ladakh

Is it not Arjun is more mobile than T90S ?
"Mobility" means speed / rate of travel between two points which also means the ability to surpass obstacles and other impediments occuring between those points.

Say, if one asks me if T-90 is more mobile than Arjun for travel from Gwalior to Taran Taran in Punjab, I would with certainity say that T-90 is more mobile.

It would take three times the efforts and times to move Arjun from Gwalior to Taran Taran.

If the tank moves on trians or road the difference won't be three times. It is going to be marginal. Army sure cannot act as if they don't know the purpose behind ARJUn's weight forever. it is to provide protection and more survival chance to win the battle, avoid ammo cook off.

Sure these things matter somewhere. isn't it? if it is so then why all the western MBTs are heavy? Are you sure they are going to suffer from the same drawbacks and lead to battle loses?

Cost of that ?

What all can one change. The railway system too !
Not be railway system but the carriages. Better bridge network.

Making new railway carriages is not going to be a daunting task.

If India has to look to indegenize, then every system has to adapt to this effort. Otherwise we will be stuck in the vicious cycle of imports.

Arjun has been well received otherwise and shown its worth against the T90.

Oh no Sir.

Arjun was being rejected by vested interests and not because it was not a good system. The DRDO stood up to that and forced a face off and proved its worth against the T90.

If india has to move on the path of locally produced weapons systems, all round adaptation is required.
