We can also say T90S does not meet IA requirement, so T90M. Now it is still development
The T-type has been in operation for 30 years. How can it not meet requirements?

The Arjun's most important requirement is indigenization. Then there are still electrical and components and bigger systems like engine and transmission that do not adhere to standards because most are foreign maal.

Weight is an issue because the army had asked for a 50+ tons tank. DRDO could not help it since the technology wasn't good enough in the 90s. The army says the tanks is a couple of tons greater than what was required. But, looks like they have settled for the tank. ERA will push the tank to above 60 tons too. As long as the new engine and transmission is good, they will be happy.

Thats for our issue of discussion that why army wants only 50+ tonnes tank, as transport cant be the reason and US has proved this as they brought their 62 tonne M1 Abrams to the gulf nations in a thousand of numbers(3000+).

Just want to know how a Russian TOT T90S become indigenization while Arjun is not because we are importing engine and transmission. We can surely get TOT for 1500hp engine if we wants to produce it in hundreds. Can we even believe that Russia will allow TOT for T90S if we have ordred for 275 tanks. These are some logical questions and answers that does not require sombody's clarification and that can be understan by everybody. By the way TOT for T90S doesnot means we are manufacturing 100% of T90S components in India.

Indeed true!
But Arjun is 60% Indigenous and 40% foreign..

Home made Stuff:

1.GUN
2.ARMOUR
3.SUSPENSION
4.FCS
5.Electronics

Yes, their are few things but with present specification Arjun is most formidable Tank in IA..

if orders are given in greater number then rest of the parts of arjun can be produce here, economics of the scale dont allow private firms to produce those parts.

But I doubt that we have enough time for that or not, because now our scientist have to work extensively on MK2 version of Arjun, which may involve those criteria listed by you.

In this ongoing debate of who is better arjun v/s t-90.....lets not forget the most imporatnt factor for a country that has just about started making its own small car now

that india today stands as a damm good integrater of weapon systems(check out mki/arjun/lca)
compatabilty of different weapon systems in a sinle platform is an all different ball game,it takes time
and is not the same as reverse engineering....it creates wealth of information leading
to new genereation weapon system.pool of skilled and trained spealists ,that doesnt come with any tot

so although arjun may have come late....we are on the right track and must aggresively persue this programme to its logical end....

After all even the t-90 initaily had some serious hicups

Arjun Mark II battle tank getting ready, first trials by June 2012

Chennai: The prototype of the Arjun Main Battle Tank (MBT) Mark II will be ready for testing by June 2012, officials of the Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment (CVR&DE), Avadi, have said. The Arjun MBT Mark I was tested in 1984.
Officials of the CVR&DE, the nodal design and development agency for the MBT, said Mark II was not only a improved version of Mark I but also had several unique features, including greater missile firepower and better protection. "By the summer of 2012, we will come out with a prototype of Arjun Mark II for tests by the Army while the complete version will be ready by 2014," CVR&DE director P Sivakumar told The Times Of India.
On July 9, the first executive board meeting was held at the CVR&DE on finalizing the configuration for the Mark II where officials of the DRDO and CVR&DE reviewed progress made by various establishments towards meeting the various requirements of the Army. Besides the CVRDE, the expertise of several allied DRDO organisations was taken for developing the Mark II.
Of the 82 improvements requested over the earlier version, the CVR&DE has so far completed 21 improvements. Some of them are: substantial increase in the missile firing capacity, provisions for night vision and for enabling the crew to engage targets under static and dynamic conditions. "Many of the improvements requested are technical in nature. The Mark I could engage targets only under static conditions. However, the Army wanted this version to engage in static and moving conditions so we incorporated them," said Sivakumar.
The new version will also have a explosive reactive armoury (ERA) that will help the crew identify explosives deployed by the enemy from a distance and take precautionary measures. The 12.7mm advance air defence gun and a new builtin power unit to reduce the noise generated are among the the other features.
The present MTB with the Army is covered with nets during operations. Mark II will have a perfect camouflage. "We delivered 80 of the 124 Arjun Mark I tanks and will deliver the rest before March 2011. We have got orders for another 124 tanks," Sivakumar added.

Yuk! Since when ERAs started helping crew identify enemy explosives and what is explosive reactive armoury? ToI is world known for its class and IMO this paragraph just shows how well they are progressing.

Kunal Sir are you expecting better protection of side portion like one is in challenger-2? IMO Arjun side protection is not that good as much of the portion above wheels are uncovered.

Yes, Arjun do have that exposed turret ring from side, still its good compare to other MBTs in terms of Armour ratings at front..
I hope DRDO will erase this drawback by ERA tiles over exposed portion..

Army To Reduce its Night Blindness, Arjun Mk-II will have panoramic Commander's sight
Director of the Dehradun-based Instruments Research Development Establishment (IRDE), S S Sundaram, said in a press conference here today that Arjun Mk-II's Commander's sight will be modified and advanced compared to the one in Arjun Mk-I.

The one in Mk-I has just day vision, but the new one being developed for Mk-II will have day and night vision, laser range finder and will be capable of firing also. It will have a range of about five kilometers, and will be ready for evaluation in one year. The lab has also developed a five kilometer Commander's sight for the T-72, which has been successful, and has got orders from the Army for similar commander's sights to be made for T-90 tanks and BMPs

Again Media people don't know how to elaborate technical data..
Arjun MK-1 have latest Thermal Sights with Tank FCS, The Article says 'panoramic Commander's sight ' it is different and meant for only Commander`s View of the battlefield!
Panoramic Sights have nothing to do with Gunner Sights..
And No T-tanks in India or Russia have the advantage of 'panoramic Commander's sight '!!

And MK-1 already have Laser range finder, the fact is the article mentioning abt indigenous NV made by DRDO, whereas MK-1 using Israeli Thermal Vision..

The news mentioned is correct it seems. In hunter killer operation, the commander search for target and gunner engages it. Commander uses panoramic sight for search which is not night capable as of now. Currently only gunner has nigh vision which adds burden on gunner. If this sight is added will make the tank more effective. (Correct me if i am wrong here)

here is what BR article says -

Features of the Arjun Mk.1 MBT

The integrated digital fire control system installed in the Arjun Mk.1 MBT consists of a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, thermal imaging night sight, meteorological sensor, stabilised panoramic sight for the tank commander, stand-by (articulated) sighting telescope, GPS and an electronic gate to ensure a first round hit probability. The third generation director type, fire control system with a 120mm gun electronically slaved to the sights, enables the gunner to locate, identify, track, range and engage moving targets while its moving. This gives a high first round hit probability. The gunner's main sight consists of a day sight, thermal sight, laser rangefinder and stabilised head common, to all three channels. The common sighting head mirror is stabilised in elevation and azimuth. The day sight has dual magnification while the thermal imager provides a night vision facility to the gunner and the commander to observe and engage targets under conditions of total darkness and smoke. The laser rangefinder is integral with the gunner's sight.

As per Sir Ajai Shukla this pic is of a ATGM that will be fired from the Arjun's main gun. I guess, they say, it has been developed by DRDO. If it is true then it means no LAHAT. Cheers!
