Can anyone tell what those two drums are for at the rear??
You mean the fuel tanks?.. Those are to carry extra fuel to be spent first & jettisoned before getting in action.

India on Thursday successfully test-fired Laser-Guided Anti-Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) from MBT Arjun at KK ranges (ACC&S) Ahmednagar. Last trial was at 3km. Max range is 4.5km, so maybe that?

Arjun is well suited for operation is Rajasthan as well as Punjab. Arjun even operated at marshy areas of Punjabwhich were thought previously as un-tankable by T-90 and T-72s or even older generation tanks.
Right. Arjun is amazing. No doubt about that. However, unless you are of firm opinion that Army consists of sell-outs, kindly let them decide the mix. That said, I would like them to atleast order a number where some sort of manufacturing eco-system is sustained for Arjun. The same system can be leveraged in future indigenous projects. The government should make additional outlay to this end.

India need to have 0 Arjun tank in service. For the price, it is the biggest disaster out there. for same price you can get a Armata. Better upgrade T 90 with new autoloader, gun and ammo instead of wasting more money on this. I hope this programme is put in dustbin for good. FMBT should be armata period.

What is the need for scrapping T-72 altogether.
Upgraded T-72 CIA Mk2 is a good tank when facing the Type 15 of PLA. Though it needs a better ERA coverage and APS (if not hardkill at least softkill one like ALWCMS of Arjun mk1A. Also the new L&T DRDO is supposed to weigh between 34 tons (with 105 mm Cockrell turret-38 tons (modified T-90 turret). Both can be good combo for year round deployment along LAC.
300 + mobile artlillary guns from korea or USA
Currently, we have so many offerings from Kalyani, Tatas and OFB, then what is the need to go for imported guns?

Very nice poster of Arjun mk1A
In this very poster it shows that the current MBT possess an APS. But what I know is that for an APS a hit-to-kill projectile should be present. Shouldn't use of VIRSS be considered as a passive protection system?

Yes, it's not hard-kill APS, but can pass for a soft-kill... It's not just usual smoke grenade launchers of T-72/90. This got laser sensors that are mated with rotatable smoke grenade launchers.
It warns the crew on being lased by ATGM's laser guidance or enemy tanks laser rangefinder & its launchers turn to create smokescreen to cut off the guideance laser beam any 2nd gen ATGM, or hide the tank from enemy gunner's sight.

Compared to Stora which automatically turns the turret to face enemy & dazzles the laser source but emits crazy IR signature.

This helps against both guns & guided-missile ambush.

If I am not wrong drdo has developed the similar soft kill system against laser.
