@Kunal Biswas @Ray @sayareakd Is the Arjun MBT Mk 1 or even the Arjun MBT Mk 2 amphibious? If so, can it go in water without any prior preparations? If not, then how long does it take to make it go in water? And at what speed?

What you are saying is true for indirect fire (parabolic trajectory to compensate for projectile drop)

What about urban or mountain warfare where the target is ~500m away and at ~50-100m elevation? Direct fire on an elevated target means gunner sight has to pitch up for proper gun laying, isn't it?
For such cases gunners site does elevate with the main gun. it happens in Leo2s as well as M1A2s, the sight is just not ristricted to the main gun in terms of elevation,depression or leads.

Eg - In Leo2 -when tracking a moving target 2000m away , gunner will keep his GPS(Gunners Primary Sight) crosshair locked on target, when he lashes (Hits the target with laser) based on the round in the breach the ballastic computer will calculate the amount of elevation the gun needs and the lead it will need to hit the target it will approriatly add lead and elevation to the gun and this happens with a second of laser hitting the target.

Now the main gun is elevated and has a lead on the target while gunners primary sight is still pointed directly at target.

The GPS (Gunners primary sight also has its own stabilization so when the main gun is fired the GPS stays on the target.) This way the gunner can actually see his round hit the target or not even if the tank is jerking from the recoil of main 120mm gun.

Cmdr also has his indpent TIS sight which is stabilized. Also during armored engagements CMdr will work with the gunner to make sure the trg is destroyed. He will not look for other targets unless the current one is destroyed.

For Arjun MK1/2, They do fording without any engg assistance and can be prepare within 5 mins, The snorkel is inbuilt in Arjun series tanks at rear where engine exhaust is ..

Arjun MBT has a bigger track-print, hence, its Nominal Ground Pressure is only 0.84 kg/cm2 which compares well with other MBTs of the world . Further, with a combination of low NGP and high power / weight ratio, it has commendable going ability. The proof being Arjun MBT crossing the Ravi at Lassian, without any engineer support, whatsoever and it has crossed numerous patches of marshy terrain which are marked 'non-tankable' in going maps of the Gurdaspur-Pathankot sector

The speed is 5-10kms in such conditions ..

For Example >>

==============

India had PT-76 tanks which were amphibious and can float over water and swim, Today T-72/90 are non - amphibious, They do fording which take 30min preparation to go through 2-4 meter deep water ..

^^ In that case, IA's assertion that Arjun's weight prevents it from being deployed across much of the operative territory is bollocks. Apart from the Himalayan terrain, Arjun should be well suited to plains of Punjab and deserts of Rajasthan no?

Recent CAG report has completely validated the Arjun and flagged of the IA evaluation's double standards. All of the IA's assertions used to reject Arjun have been completely rubbished systematically. This is why in recent months the IA has silently accepted the MoD placing additional orders for Arjun, Catapult and Arjun Mk.II whereas a few years ago they would have raised a hue and cry in media.

As they say..Chor pakdaa gayaa

@Kunal Biswas Thanks for the information! Much appreciated :thumb:

But then it means that we have no tanks in the army which can cross a big river like ganga that is 50-100m deep? Is it so?

No, For that one would require Engg assistance from Indian Army Corps of Engineers ..

The Sarvatra truck-mounted bridging system during developmental trials by DRDO and the Indian Army. The bridge can be placed over water and land obstacles to provide 75 meters of bridge-length for battle tanks, supply convoys and troops. The system is designed to take the weight of the Arjun MBT, by far the heaviest vehicle in the Army's inventory. The Sarvatra is presently in service with the Army.

The Bridge Layer Tank (BLT) mounted on the Arjun MBT chassis.

@Kunal Biswas @pmaitra

An homemade laser warning system for armored vehicle is developed. Currently, Arjun Mark 2 uses an Israel LWS.

LASTEC has designed and developed a laser warning and countermeasure system for Armoured Fighting Vehicle (AFVs). A LWS is capable of handling multiple type of laser threats and has an operational range of more than 6 km for laser designator type of laser threat. After detecting the laser threat along with its direction, it also has the capability to generate trigger signal to activate the grenade launcher for firing of smoke grenade in the direction of laser threat to obscure the platform under threat. Technology of the LWS has been transferred to BEL, Pune.

The laser warning sensors detects the laser radiation processes, determine the PRF and edge matching signals. It comprises of opto-electronic front end, signal processing and conditioning, embedded module for PRF decoding, and edge matching signal.

The master controller receive inputs from multiple laser warning sensors, processes the information and feeds the desired commands to the decoy laser. The master controller comprises of hardware and software module to interface with the laser sensor units and the decoy laser.

Decoy laser is a high energy laser source that takes command from laser warning system and generate a pulsed laser radiation synchronised with the PRF generated by the laser warning system. It is used to illuminate a dummy target to misguide the laser guided bomb on to the dummy target.

"ARJUN TANK HULL AND TURRET HAS BEEN MODIFIED TO ACHIEVE THE TARGET WEIGHT OF ABOUT 55 TONS FROM 59-64 TONS." And "THE MARK-II VERSION COMPLETED MOST USER TRIALS IN 2012 AND 2013 AND DISPLAYED IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE. THE NEW FEATURES OF THE MODIFIED 55 TONNE ARJUN MARK 2 RECEIVED FAVORABLE RESPONSES" i take these lines from mbt arjun's wiki but in the specification section mk2's weight is 68 tonne which is the correct weight!!!

Pakistan is at max 400 km deep from our border. so if PA wont challenge us within few hours we can cross and go to Afghanistan.
Ofcourse in war it will be heavily defended, with anti tank crew, anti tank mines, tanks and other means to halt tanks. So speed is ok for Arjun MK-II.

if on first day we go 100 kms inside Pakistan with all the Independent Battle groups on an average it will be good progress, as it mean that we have gone inside 1/4 of Pakistan.
For sure we can't do it in one go right? What about the fuel situation? How does that work? Do other armored vehicles carrying fuel travel behind tank formations? Or is there extra fuel stored inside the tanks?

Is it just me or does the turret actually resemble that of a Merkava?

Good. Now we can watch pakis blown up in HD. :p
Problem is, the sight is Israeli. I doubt there will be any tech transfer on this one.

Tanks carry extra fuel in drums mounted behind the turret and without any armour. These are meant to be mounted only while the tank is in transit. If engagement with the enemy is eminent, the drums are uninstalled.
The tank formation itself has a dedicated supply chain for fuel and ammunition. These beasts are really fuel hungry.
