Bangladesh Army to get 44 tanks
2 helicopters also on purchase list

Hasan Jahid Tusher

For the first time in the country's history, the government will purchase 44 new tanks and three armoured recovery vehicles (ARV) for the army as part of its plan to modernise the armed forces.

The government will also buy two brand new helicopters for the army to ensure necessary logistic support for the UN peacekeeping activities.

The Main Battle Tanks (MBT-2000) and the ARVs will be bought from China, and the helicopters from France through government-to-government deals, which were recently signed. According to the deals, the cost of the tanks will be around Tk 1,201 crore, and the helicopters Tk 174 crore. Besides, a process is on to buy 18 brand new cannons.

The purchases would be done from the budgetary allocations for the army, said government sources.

The government increased the allocation for the armed forces to Tk 12,134 crore in the proposed budget for fiscal 2011-12 from Tk 10,918 crore in the current fiscal year.

"The tanks will be bought through a government to government deal ensuring maximum transparency," Master General of Ordnance (MGO) of Bangladesh Army Maj Gen Abdul Matin told The Daily Star yesterday.

"The purchase is being done as a part of modernisation of the Bangladesh Army," he said adding that the tanks will be delivered in phases over a span of 27 months. In the first phase 24 tanks will come within 20 months, and the rest will come in the second phase over the next 7 months.

The payment for the purchase will be made in phases over the next eight years, said the major general.

Maj Gen (retd) Amin Ahmed Chowdhury told The Daily Star that through this purchase, the military of the country will definitely get a boost.

"If the authorities concerned that would supply the tanks share transfer of technologies then it would work."

Mag Gen Abdul Matin however said the Chinese government will provide training to technicians of Bangladesh Army in China and in Bangladesh for a good period of time so that the tanks and ARVs could be maintained properly. The training will be free of charge, he said adding that the China would also give adequate spare parts of the tanks.

The government in 2003 took initiatives to buy tanks for the army, but that initiative did not see the light of day due to budgetary limitations, said the sources.

The government was supposed to buy seven tanks last year and seven more this year. As only a Chinese company took part in the tender, the government cancelled it, and re-invited tender in which four companies from China, Russia, Ukraine, and Pakistan participated. Chinese company Norinco was selected as the lowest bidder.

Later the army requested the government to buy 44 tanks instead of 14.

A five-member committee headed by Maj Gen Abdul Matin signed a deal with the Chinese defence ministry on June 14 to purchase the tanks. According to the deal, China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) will deliver the tanks.

Matin said Eurocopter, a global helicopter manufacturing company in France, will supply the two helicopters by July next year.

The two helicopters will be used in UN peacekeeping missions, he said.

The committee chief said they have signed a draft deal with the countries concerned to purchase 18 new cannons. The agreement will be finalised next year, he added.

Bangladesh first got tanks in 1974 during Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's trip to Egypt. The then Egyptian president Anwar Sadat presented Bangabandhu with 44 tanks that were in good shape, said government sources.

Some refurbished tanks have also been bought for the army over the years.

Al-Khalid/MBT-2000 Main Battle Tank

Just Starting this thread to discuss about the pakistani Al-Khalid Tank.

I think Kunal Biswas will tell you that the tank is a design disaster.

What pakis claim is that Al-Khalid has a Hunter Killer Technology that makes their tanks superior as compared to T-90.

Hunter killer

The term "Hunter-Killer", the concept means:-
(i) The ability of the commander to look for 'new' targets, while the gunner is engaging the present target,
(ii) Having located the 'new' target, the commander is able to range it and track it, so that all the gunner is now left with doing, is 'pointing' and 'shooting.'
(iii) An advancement of the same would imply, that while the gunner is engaging Target 'A', the commander has located Target 'B' and if there is also a Target 'C' that is present, the target data of Target 'B' (which was stored in the temporary memory of the ballistic computer of the Fire Control System) is automatically handed over to the gunner, while the commander goes about acquiring Target 'C'.

Can experienced member please explain is it possible to achieve higher rate of fire in the T90 without Hunter-Killer Technology?

^^
The gunner was focused on Target A
The Commander on Target B

Meanwhile the Taliban RPG operator who should have been Target C went and ruined everything.....

Result: 1 smoking Al-Kabab.

You can achieve the rate of fire based on how fast you can load. Hitting targets in multiple succession quickly is what this technology is about. It is the ability to slave your gun-sight automatically to the next target based on preselected targeting.

You can see at 2:48 the gunner's slave between targets. Yeah, you can engage targets far more quickly with this ability.

Re: Ukraine will supply tank engines to Pakistan and China

I know, in India discussed a question the installation of the Ukrainian "diesels" on T-72 (5TDFM 1050 hp) and T-90 (6TD-2E 1200 hp). These engines are not afraid of heat and rarefied air of mountains. They work on all types of fuel and from a compactness and it is possible to put in any tank. What say it on this occasion in your military?

Indeed, Ukrainian 5TD and 6TD compact Diesel engines series are really good designs. They had their problems in the past, but seems they had been solved. But Ukraine will get more chances for exports when more powerfull 1500HP and 1800HP versions of 6TD will be avaiable.

Ukraine has engine 6TD-3 (1400 hp). but him nobody is buying - power surplus.

An official price is not present, but an engine costs about 400000$. In India has of Su-30ÐœK, in China - J - 10 In Pakistan - JF - 17. For them all the Russian engine "AL". That, with and Russia is it also necessary diplomatic relations to tear?

They have more manufacture and design capabilities as well as good engineers than most of other states on this planet.

Re: Tank Guns and Ammunition

What, You mean it can destroy any tank? Sure depending where You hit and what ammunition You will use.

Unfortunetly for You, APFSDS ammunition effectiveness (and APFSDS is basic anti tank ammunition used today) depends on several factors like penetrator lenght, diameter etc.

However as it was said many times, the problems with two piece ammunition for 125mm smoothbore guns is that they have limited penetrator lenght.

So while for NATO tanks penetrators lenght slowly somes close to approx ~1,000mm, only Russians recently redesigned their autoloader to fit inside projectile with penetrator lenght max ~740mm.

This is of course one factor.

Besides this don't be too excited, only tanks used by Pakistan that are worth to be interested in are T-80UD's sold to You by Ukraine. That Chinese export crap You use, the Al Khalid is not worth to be even excited with it.
i know the reason being the autoloader..

and would nt go into a blind debate over AK.

i want you to tell me why do you consider AK(lol chineese exported) a crap?any solid reason?

and plzz quote me only 5-10% chinese components in basic AK(didnt mentioned the AK1 which has most of local things include a solid state autoloader)

:)

Of course there are solid reasons.

First armor protection.

Chinese based their armor protection concept on Soviet one, but also changed it a bit by using turret front modular armor.

This means to things. In Soviet composite armor concept, the composite filler space per armor thickness is smaller than in western designs. However for T-xx series situation is not that bad at all, because they use mostly integrated armor, not modular one.

Chinese modular armor have a very specific design.

As You can see, rather small space is occupied by composite armor, while the rest is simple steel and air gap.

Compare this to the drawing with armor thickness.

You can now see that per whole armor thickness, only very little space is used for composite armor, making it much weaker. Al Khalid use exactly the same armor design.

(Note armor estimation is made only on ZTZ-98/99 drawing, but is made for Al Khalid. Photo and drawing by Militarysta).

Let's compare ot for example with some NATO MBT's.

As we can see the space used for composite armor in NATO MBT's is bigger.

This drawing shows exactly where composite armor is placed. As You can see, space used for such armor is far bigger, especially in case of turret than in case of any Chinese tank.

Of course there are other things, like turret geometry, weak zones size and placement etc. Just read this forum, there is plenty of materials made by use of serious sources from around the world.

Also read this thread.
