Navy is already committed to Barak 8 system from a long time and it already invested on it, It is also planned to produce the system in country ..

Akash is design mainly for ground operation, Never was intended for Naval use, Unless it is extremely modified to fit the requirement which will take time and resources ..

Hence they are not committed towards Akash as of now ..
Was the article then misleading? as i was also thinking on the same lines?

No, just confusing. Navy wants use Maitri as PDMS in place of Barak 1. For fleet defence it will use Barak 8.

Army and AF wanted to use Maitri as SR Sam. With Akash showing promising results, probably interest for Maitri has dried out.

So, Akash wasn't on the table for Navy even with or without Maitri.

So, the author created confusion.

Well, it might be so, if IAF and Army pulls out of maitri, Navy might suffer as it's requirement might not be enough for GoI to go ahead with the joint development.

We have Astra Missile. Astra mk-2 will have range of 35-40 kms when launched from ground. why not use Astra..

Well that might just be the plan. DRDO says it can deliver a indigenous QR SAM, whether it is a spin off of Astra or a Trishul-2, I don't know.

had heard on this from saurav jha,DRDO is in advance stages of deisgn. This missile(QRSAM) has potential to grab huge orders once inducted. Even though it is the ballistic missiles which have given fame to DRDO,its the tactical missiles which will get huge orders and increase DRDO reputation among IA and IAF.

BTW,we have not heard on Akash mk-2 from long time.

The TATRA are meant to protect tactical station like command center or communication, Where as Tracked are design to keep up with mechanized units ..

It is true that Akash SAM cannot be fired on thew move, but that would most likely be a limitation of the launch vehicle, not of the missile itself. Let's have a look at the launch vehicle:

I think Akash canisterized version should be manufactured.
akash can be carried around in a tatra truck and launched at any place.Only limitation is that at the time of launch it has to be stationary only.Once launched vehicle can move ahead to any place.

Canister makes the missile weather resistant also modifying the missile launch into vertical launch system will give stability.

BMP based Akash launcher was dropped in favour of T-72 chassis mounted version ..

As T-72 has bigger track hence lower ground pressure so does longer range ..

How well does Aakash SAM fare against tactical ballistic missiles and subsonic cruise missiles?
If it is not meant for missile interception, a QRSAM is imperative.

India looks to double missile production to 100 per month

HYDERABAD: India is looking to double missile production to 100 per month, a senior defence official said here today.

Distinguished scientist and Director of Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), K Jayaraman said Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, is currently producing 50-60 indigenously-developed Akash missile per month.

Hyderabad-based DRDL is a multi-disciplinary missile system laboratory with thrust on design, development and flight evaluation of various types of missile systems for armed forces.

"...the Government is insisting that we (BDL, which is the lead integrator of missiles in the country) should increase production capacity rate to 100 per month," he said at a public session on 'Telangana Moving Forward Through Innovation and Entrepreneurship' by CII.

Stressing the need for industry participation to step up production, Jayaraman said it has been recommended to the Government to identify a "large industry" which can be lead integrator of missiles and 50-60 medium-scaled industries on the sub-systems front.

Many countries, including those in South America, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore, have expressed interest to procure Akash and BrahMos missiles, he said, adding, the government is in process of formulating a policy on exports in this regard.

"We should first meet requirements of our services (armed forces), then only we can export," Jayaraman said.

Jayaraman said the new generation anti-radiation missile would be ground-tested in two months. "Basically, it (the anti-radiation missile) is air-launched against the enemy radar emitting targets," he added.
