Mexican air force helicopter crashes; 3 dead

MEXICO CITY — Mexican officials say an air force helicopter has crashed in the western state of Jalisco, killing three military personnel on board.

The Defense Department reports that the Bell 206 aircraft originated in Michoacan state and went down about 60 miles (100 kilometers) southeast of the Guadalajara airport.

It blames the crash on "adverse meteorological conditions."

According to a statement late Saturday, two officers were among the three killed. The Department said the crash happened July 7, but did not explain why no announcement was made earlier.

On June 18, a Bell 412 air force chopper crashed in the northern state of Durango, killing 11 military personnel.

That crash was also attributed to bad weather.

A Chinese-made K-8 military plane crashed in Venezuela

By Editor at 22 July, 2010, 1:51 am

BY: The Canadian Press.
A Chinese-made K-8 military plane crashed in Venezuela during a training flight Wednesday, but officials said both people on board ejected and survived.
One fractured his hip and will undergo surgery, air force commander Maj. Gen. Jorge Arevalo Oropeza said. A flight instructor also on board was not hurt.
The plane crashed Wednesday morning on the outskirts of Barquisimeto in western Lara state, local emergency management director Hector Vargas told TV channel Globovision.
Arevalo blamed engine failure and said a panel will investigate the exact cause of the crash, together with a team of Chinese investigators.
Venezuela received an initial shipment of six K-8s earlier this year, and President Hugo Chavez said last month that he has signed off on spending $82 million to buy 18 more of the trainer and light attack jets.

Mig-27 crashes in West Bengal, twelve injured
A Mig-27 of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in Mainaguri, in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal on Saturday. The crash occurred near the Hashimara air base, at 10:30 am.

The pilot of the aircraft ejected out, and is reported to be safe. But 12 people, including 4 children have been injured in the crash.

This is the second Mig-27 crash in the eastern sector. In February this year, the IAF's entire fleet of over 100 Mig 27s were grounded for technical inspection, after a pilot was killed in a crash near Siliguri in West Bengal.

India lost two MiG-27 jets last year, and a total of about 12 since 2001, due to crashes attributed largely to defects in the aircraft's engines.

Canadian jet crashes during air show practice

A Canadian air force jet crashed and exploded in a ball of flames during a training run for a weekend international air show in Alberta, but the pilot was able to eject from the plummeting plane before it hit the runway.

The pilot, Capt. Brian Bews, who sustained a sore back and scraped—up arms, was treated at a hospital and released on Friday.

Capt. Bews was practicing on Friday in a CF—18 Hornet jet over Lethbridge County Airport for an international air show. The CF—18 he was flying is a model specifically used for air shows.

"All of a sudden you could hear 'pop, pop, pop,' " witness Roland Booth told CTV News. "I saw sparks come out of the one engine. The plane started banking over to the side. That's when the pilot bailed out with his parachute."

Another witness, aviation buff Darren Jansens, says the pilot was just starting a manoeuvre known as a High Alpha pass before the accident.

"It's a high—angle pass, very low speed, fairly close to the ground. It's the lowest—speed manoeuvre the Hornet generally performs," said Jansens.

"The pilot did eject safely but was dragged several hundred feet unconscious along the ground," he added.

The military and the Department of Transport immediately launched an investigation into the accident. There was no indication of the cause of the accident.

Air show president Robb Engen said the airport was briefly closed to all incoming and outgoing flights, but he said the event, which is in its 19th year, would go ahead as planned this weekend.

"We did have an unfortunate incident during a practice run this afternoon, but the military has given us their full support to continue for the weekend," said Mr. Engen. "The show is continuing as originally planned. Thankfully the pilot, as we hear, is OK."

Mr. Bews, who was assigned to 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron based at Bagotville, Quebec, was selected by the air force to join the CF—18 demonstration team for 2010.

The accident will have no impact on CF—18 operations elsewhere in the country, 2nd Lt. Christopher Daniel said from Ottawa.

"It is one of the most reliable airplanes you can buy on the market. Its safety record is second to none. I have no problem getting in the airplane and I know that Capt. Bews will be eager to get back in as well," Mr. Daniel said.

Officials: Israeli helicopter crashes in Romania

BUCHAREST, Romania – A helicopter carrying one Romanian and six Israeli soldiers crashed Monday in mountainous terrain during joint military training, the Romanian defense ministry said.
There is no information on whether there are survivors, Defense Ministry spokesman Constantin Spanu said. Officials were scrambling to reach the accident site near the central Romanian town of Zarnesti, some 120 kilometers (75 miles) northwest of Bucharest, he said.
Spanu said the Israeli transport helicopter CH-53 was flying at low altitude and lost radio contact mid-afternoon Monday.
The ministry said the cause of the crash was still unknown, but Defense Minister Gabriel Oprea has ordered an investigation and sent officials to the area.
A Romanian medical evacuation helicopter and two Israeli helicopters were trying to locate the crash site.
Earlier this month, the ministry reported that an Israeli CH-53 made an emergency landing on July 18 due to unspecified technical problems.
Romanian and Israeli troops are taking part in Blue Sky 2010, 11-day joint aviation exercises in which troops are trained to fly at low altitude in search, rescue and medical evacuation exercises.
The Israeli military spokesman's office said only that it was looking into the report

Iranian fighter jet crashes near nuclear plant
(AP) – 47 minutes ago
TEHRAN, Iran — A semi-official Iranian news agency says an Iranian F4 fighter jet has crashed in the country's south, near a nuclear power plant that is expected to be launched next month.
Local government official Gholam Reza Keshtkar says the Iranian airforce plane crashed on Tuesday, about 4 miles (6 kilometers) north of the city of Bushehr.
Bushehr is 745 miles (1,200 kilometers) south of the capital, Tehran.
Keshtkar says the pilot and co-pilot ejected from the plane before it crashed but were rushed to the hospital in the city. He didn't provide other details.
The Bushehr nuclear power plant — Iran's first such facility — is expected to start fueling up this week.

A N.Korean MiG-21 Crashed In China
Possibly a deserter. The locals at the crash site revealed on the internet that there was one man rescued by medical people. The aircraft was in rather good shape (it didn't explode), hinting insufficient fuel being the cause of crash. People at my forum have identified it as a MiG-21PF/PFM (see image).

Not quite unusual as we have thousands of N.Korean deserters. But this happened amidst the US-S.Korea joint naval exercise. Could be interesting to see how every party involved would react.
