Wreckage of Su-27 fighter found in Russia's Far East

Rescue teams discovered on Friday the crash site of a Su-27 Flanker fighter jet which had been missing in the Khabarovsk Territory since Thursday, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The fighter had been performing a scheduled flight and was about 30 km away from the Dzemga airbase when it disappeared off the radar screens.

"The crash site has been discovered by military rescue teams near the town of Galichny, about 20 km [12.5 miles] north of Komsomolsk-on-Amur," the official said.

Rescuers are continuing the search for the pilot, he added.

The Su-27 is a Mach-2 class air-superiority aircraft designed as a direct competitor for the heavy fourth generation Western fighters, such as the F-15 Eagle.

About 450 Su-27 aircraft have been built for the Russian Air Force since 1984, and over 200 jets have been exported to other countries, including China, Indonesia, Angola and some ex-Soviet states.

Russia used Su-27s to gain airspace control over Tskhinvali, the capital city of South Ossetia, during a brief war with Georgia in August 2008.

Last year there were at least two fatal crashes involving Su-27 fighter jets.

On August 30, 2009, a Belarusian Air Force Su-27 fighter crashed while performing aerobatic maneuvers at an airshow in Poland, killing two pilots.

Two Su-27 fighter planes collided in midair when the Russian Knights aerial display team was rehearsing for the MAKS 2009 air show outside Moscow. The group's commander, Col. Igor Tkachenko, was killed while two other pilots were injured in the collision.

Yemeni jetfighter crashes in south Yemen: official

Sanaa, Jan 13 (AFP) A Yemeni jetfighter crashed today in south Yemen due to a technical problem, while the pilot survived, a security official said.

The aircraft crashed in the area of Salah al-Din, west of the port city of Aden, the official said requesting anonymity.

"The pilot has survived," he said, adding that it crashed due to a "technical problem."

A witness told AFP that jetfighters flew Wednesday at low altitude over the city of Zinjibar, in the southern region of Abyan

YANGON A Myanmar Air Force fighter plane crashed on Friday morning while attempting to land at Yangon airport, killing its pilot, an airport official said.

An official at Yangon International Airport said the Chinese-made F-7 jet crashed while on a training flight. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. The Air Force base is adjacent to the civilian airport and uses the same runways.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, a Swedish think tank, Myanmar purchased at least 36 F-7 jets from China in the 1990s.

A military plane has crashed into a residential area in the southern Philippines, killing a senior air force commander and seven other people aboard, officials say.

There were no immediate reports of casualties on the ground in Cotabato city, said national police spokesman Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina.

The twin-prop Nomad aircraft crashed on Thursday shortly after taking off and burst into flames, setting fire to two houses that it had hit, regional military commander Lt. Gen. Raymundo Ferrer said.

Television footage showed one charred body among the flaming debris as people tried to help firemen put out the blaze, some dousing the fire with garden hoses.

The plane had stopped in Cotabato on its way from Davao city to Zamboanga city, Ferrer said.

The pilot radioed soon after takeoff to say the plane had an emergency and was heading back when it crashed, Civil Aviation Authority deputy director Ed Kapunan told DZBB radio.

Two Taiwan pilots killed in crash

TAIPEI: Taiwan's military confirmed Thursday that two pilots were killed when their plane went down during a routine training mission.

The military launched a massive search after the propeller-driven T-34 trainer went missing above the mountains of southern Taiwan shortly after taking off from the air force academy on Tuesday.

"We have found the bodies of both pilots and we will continue investigating" the cause of the accident, said Yen Te-fa, a spokesman for the search mission. The air force has grounded all 40 trainers for safety checks after the incident.

US military: 3 die in helicopter crash in Germany


BERLIN – A U.S. military helicopter crashed in western Germany on Wednesday, killing all three people aboard, according to a spokesman for U.S. Army Europe.

The aircraft went down about 6:20 p.m. (1720GMT) Wednesday in woods near the A67 highway between Viernheim and Lorsch, south of Frankfurt, Hesse state police said.

The helicopter was a UH-60 Black Hawk, said U.S. Army Europe spokesman Bruce Anderson.

The Black Hawk is used for air assault and other military operations. It is normally designed to carry 11 combat-loaded troops.

PESHAWAR: Pakistani army officials said one of their helicopter gunships has crashed near the Afghan border and two people are dead.

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas says the Cobra helicopter went down Wednesday in the Teera Valley in Pakistan's Khyber tribal area.

Another army official said the helicopter's pilot and gunner lost their lives in the incident. He said the crash appeared to have been caused by either bad weather or a mechanical failure.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

New Delhi: A MiG-27 fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed in West Bengal on Tuesday, Defence Ministry officials said. The pilot was killed in the accident.


The fighter plane took off from the Hashimara air force base. The pilot, Wing Commander Aswal, was killed in the crash.


The IAF lost two of its Russian-made MiG-27s in crashes last year.


In May 2009, a MiG-27 crashed at Jodhpur, and in October another MiG-27 crashed near New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. In both cases, the pilots ejected safely.

IAF MiG-21 crashes in West Bengal, pilot safe

New Delhi: An Indian Air Force MiG-21 combat jet crashed soon after take-off from Bagdora in West Bengal on Friday but the pilot ejected to safety, an IAF spokesman said.

'The aircraft crashed around 3 p.m. soon after take-off and the pilot, Squadron Leader Rahul Tiwari, ejected safely,' the spokesman added.

The pilot was picked up by an SAR (search and rescue) helicopter and has been taken to hospital,' the spokesman said.

This is the second crash of an IAF fighter in three days. A MiG-27 had crashed near the Hashimara air base, also in West Bengal, on Tuesday.

Dhruv helicopter crash-lands while rehearsing for air show


An advanced light helicopter Dhruv of the Indian Air Force crash-landed in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district while rehearsing for the ‘Vayu Shakti’ air power show to be held there on Sunday.

The helicopter was part of the Sarang helicopter display team of the IAF and was rehearsing for Sunday’s air show, when the incident occurred, IAF officials said here.

“Both pilots are safe after they had to make a controlled crash-landing due to loss of power in the chopper,” they added.

The IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry to look into the reasons behind the incident, the officials said.

In 2005, the entire ALH Dhruv fleet had been grounded for several months after a similar incident in Andhra Pradesh and the subsequent probe had found a fault with the tail rotor blades of the choppers.

On whether the display team comprising four ALH Dhruvs will take part in the air show, for which the President and the Defence Minister are also coming.

Seven IAF crashes in six months

New Delhi, Mar 10 (IBNS): Six fighter aircrafts and one helicopter of Indian Air Force (IAF) have crashed since September, 2009, with preliminary causes identified as human error / technical defects.

“Every IAF aircraft accident is investigated by a Court of Inquiry and remedial measures taken thereon,” Defence Minister AK Antony said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

He informed that various measures to reduce aircraft accidents including operational risk management, crew resource management and improvised training on aviation safety have been implemented to generate a safer flying culture. Visit of all flying bases by senior aviation safety functionaries of IAF have been undertaken to apprise and caution operating units about the causes of accidents. Continuous and multi-faceted effort is always underway to enhance and upgrade flight safety.

Constant interaction with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), both indigenous and foreign, is also maintained to overcome the technical defects of aircraft. In addition anti-bird measures are also undertaken, the minister added.

Navy plane at Hyderabad air show crashes

HYDERABAD: An Indian Navy aircraft participating in an aerobatic display as part of the India Aviation 2010 exhibition at the Begumpet airport crashed into a building in the densely populated Bowenpally locality here on Wednesday. Two pilots and one unidentified person on the ground were killed instantly. Two residents of the two-storey building, a mother and son, were injured. Hyderabad could be said to have escaped a bigger catastrophe: had the aircraft fallen even a few metres away, the casualty figure would have been much higher.

The crash occurred soon after Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel inaugurated the event and moved on to the tarmac to witness the display. Four aircraft were flying in formation and had done difficult manoeuvres, when one of them broke off. As a battery of cameramen filmed the scene, the aircraft crashed: from the airport, a thick plume of smoke was visible in northern Hyderabad. The aircraft spiralled out of control and smashed into the second floor of the building which had 10 tenements. Vijayeshwari and Shyam Krishna were at home when the plane rammed it. As a green liquid from the aircraft drenched them, they jumped on to the roof of a neighbouring building. Minutes later the roof of their house collapsed. Eyewitnesses said the co-pilot tried to eject. His mangled body was found a few metres away with the chute strapped on. The other pilot's body was also mutilated. A shocked P. Suguna, who was drying green chillies on the terrace when the wreckage fell on her, said: “I fell on my back. And then a body fell next to me.”

The Navy announced the grounding of all HJT-16 Kiran MK-II aircraft which form part of the Sagar Pawan Aerobatic Demonstration Team. It ordered an inquiry.

South Korean helicopter crashes a day after 2 fighter jet crashes kill three pilots: 2 killed

SEOUL -- Seoul's Yonhap News Agency reported that a helicopter crashed in Gyonggi province late Wednesday, killing two crew members.

Firefighters said that the helicopter belonged to a military air service unit. It went down into a field in Namyangju city, approximately 20 km east of the capital Seoul, at around 8:14 p.m.

The two crew members of the downed chopper were rushed to a hospital, but were later confimed dead.

Local police said that there were no casualties on the ground.

The crash comes after two South Korean fighter jets crashed into a mountain Tuesday during a routine training mission, killing three airmen on board, the military said.

The F-5 jets hit a mountain in Pyeongchang, about 110 miles (180 kilometres) east of Seoul, shortly after they took off from a nearby air base, an air force official said on condition of anonymity citing department policy.

Three airmen were aboard the jets, and rescuers later found body parts, uniforms and shoes at the crash site, the official said.

“We believe they all died on the job,” he said.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known.

NATO helicopter crashes in Afghanistan

KABUL — A NATO helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan Tuesday with Turkish soldiers on board, but the military alliance denied that anyone had been killed.
The military chopper came down on the outskirts of Wardak town, capital of the province of the same name south of Kabul, at around 10.30 am (0600 GMT), provincial spokesman Shahidullah Shahid told AFP.
He said one of the Turkish soldiers on board was killed and three others injured but NATO denied there were any deaths.
"There are no fatalities," said Lieutenant Colonel Todd Vician, spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF).
He said that four or possibly five people had been injured according to initial investigations.
The crash happened as two helicopters were landing at a Turkish-run base, Shahid said, adding that both belonged to NATO member Turkey.
One crashed into a hillside near the base, known as a provincial reconstruction team (PRT), while the other landed safely, he said.
"One Turkish soldier has been killed and three injured in the helicopter crash today," he told AFP.
The injured were in a critical condition, he said, and had been evacuated by helicopter to the capital, Kabul.
A witness said the chopper's rotor blades had apparently clipped the side of the hill, after which it began to spin out of control while hovering just above the ground.
"We were watching the two helicopters as they were both hovering to land, one did land and the other all of a sudden hit the hills nearby, and smoke started coming out of the back and the blades started falling apart and flying everywhere," said the witness, Mohammad Zarif.
"We could see that one soldier was lying on the ground and three others were inside," he added.
Turkey has 1,835 troops in Afghanistan, according to NATO, and controls the PRT in Wardak, which has been a relative hotspot for insurgent activity.
PRTs are playing a pivotal role in the new counter-insurgency strategy for speeding an end to the Afghan war, coordinating military and civilian efforts.
The insurgency has been intensifying over the past year, as the Taliban has spread its footprint to gain a permanent presence in up to 80 percent of the country, according to experts.
NATO and the United States are boosting troops figures to 150,000 in coming months, as counter-insurgency efforts peak.

Two Red Arrows collide mid-air off coast of Crete

Two Red Arrows jets have collided off the coast of Crete, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

One of the pilots was taken to hospital after ejecting from an aircraft, while the second is believed to have landed safely.

A spokesman for the MoD told inthenews.co.uk no names or details of the pilots involved were being given until next of kin had been informed, but confirmed that: "An incident has occurred involving the Red Arrows whilst undertaking pre-season training at Hellenic Air Force Base Kastelli in Crete.

"A service inquiry will be convened to determine the cause of the accident."

The team of pilots arrived in Crete on Sunday for the first stage of Exercise Springhawk.

Yesterday Red 4, Flight Lieutenant Dave Davies, said: "Everyone has been really friendly and we are all in good spirits. The transit here all went to plan and the set up for us at Kastelli is excellent.

"We've flown two trips today [Monday] and are getting used to our new surroundings. There are big hills to consider for our rear crowd arrival and the higher temperatures have changed the handling of the aircraft a little but it is going well so far."

He added: "As well as flying we are still training hard for the London Marathon. We have been out running to keep to our training schedule plus it gives us a great opportunity to have a good look around."

PICTURE: Turkey's first T129 attack helicopter crashes

The first prototype of AgustaWestland's T129 attack helicopter being developed for Turkey crashed on the afternoon of 19 March during a test flight, leaving its Italian test pilot and its test engineer needing hospital treatment for minor injuries.

Early indications point to a loss of power to the tail rotor while flying at an elevation of 1,500ft (455m) near Verbania in northern Italy. Investigation of the incident will focus on establishing the exact cause of the power failure.

The $3 billion ATAK project, based on the A129 Mangusta, is likely to be delayed because of the crash. The deal was signed in 2008, and the first prototype, P1, made its first flight in September 2009. Turkey has ordered 50 production T129s for delivery from 2013 and has options on another 41.

AgustaWestland will make two T129 prototypes in Italy, after which manufacture will shift to its Turkish partner TAI. The aircraft will be equipped with Turkish-made systems including electronics, forward-looking infrared sensor, cockpit avionics and mission computer from Aselsan, and weapon systems from Roketsan.

Malaysian pilot dies in crash

A Malaysian air force pilot was killed when the RMAF Pilatus PC-7 aircraft he was flying during an air show crashed, on Thursday.

Royal Malaysian Air Force spokesman confirmed the incident and said only one pilot was on board when the incident occurred, according to Bernama news.

The 33-year-old pilot was manoeuvring the Pilatus PC-7 plane during an air show at Universiti Utara Malaysia when the engine compartment exploded and caught fire.

The pilot did not survive the impact and his body, still strapped to his seat, was discovered some 10 metres away from the plane's wreckage. The body had been airlifted from the scene by an RMAF helicopter, reports said.

Two pilots were killed In September last year when their Pilatus PC-7 crashed and burst into flames at the Langkawi International Airport in Kedah.

RMAF has 30 units of the Swiss-made PC-7 Mk I which it mainly use for training purposes.
