Dummy Agni 5 Missile Tested for Ejection from Canister:thumb:

In a crucial technological accomplishment, a simulated canister-based launch of a dummy missile weighing 50 tonnes was successfully carried out by scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently.

With the success of the "Missile Ejection Test" (MET), DRDO missile technologists are gearing up to conduct the first canister-based test-firing of 5,000-plus km range nuclear weapons-capable Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Agni-V in March-April, 2014.

"We were able to launch canister launch system for the first time", a top DRDO scientist told The Hindu. All parameters were achieved and the hardware and software applications for the simulated launch were tested. They included the launcher, canister interfacing with other elements. An important aspect was to keep the sealing intact between the missile and gas generator when the latter provided the thrust and ejected the system at high temperatures.

Missile exit velocity, inter-locking of instruments, sensors functioning and the subsequent sequencing of events were some of the crucial objectives that were met successfully. As the missile got ejected from the canister, sensors gave the signal to the computer to commence commands for subsequent events such as igniting the missile's first stage.

Another top missile technologist, who is closely involved with Agni-V mission, described the MET success as a "very important milestone and a prelude to the main launch." It laid the foundation and provided core competence to the DRDO for the canister launch system.

India joined an elite club of nations that possess the ICBM launch capability when the maiden test-firing of Agni-V was successfully conducted on April 19, 2012. Soon after the resounding success of the second Agni V mission on September 15 this year, Avinash Chander, DRDO Director General and Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, and Director General (Missiles and Strategic Systems) V.G. Sekaran had announced that the next trial would be canister based.

Mr. Avinash had also stated that Agni-V would become a quick reaction stop-and-launch system once provided with the canister-thrust capability. It will also impart high operational flexibility to the user.

Q : Can you name some recent successes of the DRDO?
Avinash Chander :
DRDO has gone through a transformation phase culminating into major achievements. Most recent has been the Agni V which has brought it closer to the ICBM (intercontinental Ballistic Missile) category. Arihant (nuclear powered submarine) has become critical and the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) is going towards Operational Clearance. Arjun Mark II has gone from user trials and has been met with most the requirements. It is for the first time that India has DRDO-developed indigenous platforms for land, air, space and underwater.

That settles it then. Agni-V cannot be called an ICBM.

does it matter if A5 is ICBM or not if we can reach all parts of China ?

As far ICBM is concern, we have proven that we can reach Moon and now reaching for Mars, so no point in earth is unreachable, plus we have proven re entry tech lots of time. I am sure A5 can easily reach 6000 km but some friends will not like it even though they know that we can reach it any time we want.

I agree it does not matter whether Agni-V is ICBM or not. All I am saying is that we cannot really call it an ICBM.

I think most important point is that A1, A3 and A5 and even A4 are all different missiles and full points to DRDO that they have played the name game well and didnt allow our enemy and friends to complaint about new missiles.

agni 5 on various ocasion by drdo is quoted to have a range between 5k-6k km with a 1.5 ton warhead.if we reduce the warhead weight it can go upto 8k km.Hence agni 5 is technically an icbm but for a true icbm force projection against china or nato we need 10k km which will be acheived in agni 6.

if india launches an agni 6 with 10k range then may be next time when manmohan singh visits america he will be stripped searched.
America, Russia, China all are conducting ICBM tests mainly because of the failure of SALT Treaty II and instead of reducing the ICBM's , more and more are getting added in the name of Space explorations , so countries like India just cant sit and see all this . All countries are placing missile shield and testing ICBM's , So why not Republic of India ?

"Technically" (you mean theoretically), yes. What I am more interested is a demonstrated ICBM capability. As of now, there is none.

Imo this is more of a political decision which should be timed perfectly for the biggest bang for the buck.

Agni-5 missile to be ready in two years

Chandigarh, January 28
Defence Research and Development Organisation will test the "containerised" version of Agni-5 intercontinental ballistic missile later this year, with user trials by the armed forces scheduled for the end of the next year.

DRDO's Director General, Missiles and Strategic Systems, Dr VG Sekaran told The Tribune during his visit here that three more developmental phase trials of the Agni-5 are required to validate the design configuration and new technologies, before user trials commence by the end of 2015. User trials, he said, are as good as handing over the missile system for induction, implying that Agni-5, India's longest range nuclear armed missile that has hit targets 5,000 kms away, could be operational in about two years' time.

Agni-5 would be road or rail mobile and will be stored in and launched from a hermetically sealed canister made of special steel that preserves the missile for several years.

Agni-5 to be ready for induction in armed forces by next year | The Indian Express

Addressing a press conference at the Defexpo-2014, Chander said the Agni-5 ballistic missile is expected to be ready for induction by the next year.
"It will take two-three more trials for the completion of the development trials. These trials are expected be completed within one year. We are going to do the trials from canisters this year. After few trials it will be ready for induction," he said.

Let's hope that DRDO gets the mentioned work on MIRV done and I personally like to see the India's front line dream project of SURYA ICBM GETTING FINISHED AND TESTED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. Say 5 years from now at least, with MIRV's on it.
surya is non issue, aim for SLBM with MIRVs.
