So who are the contenders now? I think that MSMC and amogh won't be in contention as they are 5.56×30 mm.

Look at it this way..At least something is moving on this front. It's better than having nothing at all.

60% contract to be awarded to L1 bidder and 40% to L2 bidder. So we are going to have guns from two manufacturers as carbines. Basically, two guns.

This is the basic weapon of a Jawan. There life depends upon it. Their confidence over the weapon platform is an important factor in a skirmish. The delays in decision making only shows how much they are valued.

Saheb log took 15 years to decide which rifles to use. Came up with brilliant idea of multiple calliber and multiple guns. Now even that can't be executed. Carbine deal also seems to be forgotten, AK 203 is also seems to be in limbo, For sig only God knows what's going to actually happen.

In 1988-89 they tested steyr AUG. But it wasn't good enough for IA. A decade later they ended up with INSAS. Nothing is good enough. Same story different era.

MOD should cut the order of AK's due to this new delay in already delayed procurement and buy a good AR based rifle (whichever one was their L2 that they were testing since past 15 years) and end this endless requirement.

They will buy in absurd numbers (something like 20k or 40k) of rifles of each type present in this world. Every time a new tender and you know why it's done. Who cares about the Jawan on the border. I would leave it at that.

What's the use? IA will buy Russian stuff on emergency purchase basis only. All others will be put in unending testing cycle. Some are still competing for last 15 Years.

How long the assault rifle tender has been going on? I believe its a decade or more. Now reports suggests that SIG orders will be cancelled. If true IA will have another 7.62*51 calibre rifle probably R2 in its inventory.

The way modernisation is going on it seems that apart from using multiple calibers, IA will be also using multiple guns in a same caliber. Slow claps for planing and implementation process.
