Russian's Air Force to Receive New Generation Long-Range Bomber in 2023

The Russian Air Force will start receiving its first PAK DA next generation long-range bomber in 2023, Russian Air Force Commander-in-Chief Lt. Gen. Viktor Bondarev said Thursday.

Earlier reports said PAK DA bombers could be supplied to the Russian Air Force approximately by 2020.

"The maiden flight should be performed in 2019. State tests and supplies will be completed in 2023," Bondarev said.

The head of United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), Mikhail Pogosyan, told reporters earlier that the full-fledged construction work would start already this year.
It is expected that the new bomber will be able to penetrate through modern air defenses and suppress them. PAK DA will be equipped with the newest complex of the radio electronic combat and high-precision weaponry.

Russia's strategic Air Force operates a total of 32 Tu-95MC6, 31 Tu-95MC16 and 13 Tu-160 bombers. Altogether, they are capable of carrying 850 long-range cruise missiles.

An engine for PAK DA bomber will be derived from the engine, which powers Tu-160

The engine for the next- generation long-range strategic bomber (PAK DA) will be developed using the engine core of the engine, which powers Tu-160 strategic bomber, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a representative of United Engine Corporation (UEC, part of Rostec State Corporation). "Tu-160 jet is powered by NK-32 engines; this engine will be upgraded and modified and then it will be installed on PAK DA. It will be a new engine derived from engine core of NK-32 Tier 2 engine", — representatives of UEC told RIA Novosti at Oboronexpo-2014 exhibition held in Zhukovsky (Moscow Region). "8 billion rubles will be allocated from the budget for development of the engine; the corporation's own funds will also be used", — UEC added. The official magazine of Oboronexpo-2014 international exhibition reports with reference to the CEO of UEC, Vladislav Masalov, that a contract for development of the engine for PAK DA bomber has not been signed yet. However, performance specification, preliminary program schedule and contract terms are being discussed. The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian air forces, Colonel General, Viktor Bondarev, said earlier that PAK DA will perform its maiden flight in 2019 and its serial production will be started in 2012-2022.

Russian military aircraft engine designer Kuznetsov has announced completing bench tests of a new propulsion system in development for a next- generation bomber. The Samara-based company says in a 7 November news release that the early bench test supports the Russian government's plan to complete first flight of the promising aviation complex - long-range aviation (PAK DA) aircraft by 2019. The Russian air force launched PAK DA in 2009, selecting Tuploev – maker of the Tu-95 and Tu-160 bombers, and the Tu-22 supersonic bomber – to design the new aircraft.

In June, state-owned media in Russia quoted Kuznetsov officials who announced the company had won a competition to develop the new engine for the PAK DA bomber. Kuznetsov also supplied the engines for the Tu-95, Tu-160 and T-22 programmes. Details of the new engines architecture and performance have not been released. Pictures released by Kuznetsov reveal engine proportions not unlike the scale of the Pratt & Whitney F135. The bench tests serve to validate research and development investments in a production engine, says Kuznetsov executive director Nicholas Jakushin.

I see many folks here are obsessed with Paki and China as enemies and want to limit the Indian military capacity to dealing with only these 2 countries. When India is spending 100s of billions of dolllars for its defense, why should it not consider other threats such as EU or USA as well.
Yes, US/EU are very powerful but giving a nosebleed to even a big bully by a little guy ...can stop him and deter him. IMO, Indian defense planning needs to take into account all potential enemies and not just Paki or China. A good place to start is a 10000 miles range SURYA intercontinental Ballistic Missile. Paki is not a problem as India has more than enough conventional weapons to destroy Paki very quickly....Only need to demolish Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar and Paki is finished 90%. Nuclear war is another matter...than everyone is finished..entire world.

We should reduce the number of threats, not increase. I think we should drop China also from list of enemies.
There is no need to call either USA or EU enemies.

India's military spend is not at all related to the list of enemies.

Well...I did not mean to say that China, EU or USA are enemies....in fact ,I think the only adversary is Paki. I was saying that if India is spending 100s of billions on upgrading military, WHY it needs to limit itself.....why not get fully prepared for any potential future threat from any corner of the World.
More likely, China will become more and more a friend due to huge business deals...USA has no appetite to have another 1.2 billion more opponents....Russia has been and IS a reliable, time tested friend.....therefore, only Paki is at his time ...an enemy....may be only Paki miltary is the enemy as it allow itself to be used by its masters in foreign places. People to people contact might change the mindset of Pakistani people ... Wise prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

Russia may have to scrap it plans to build a fifth-generation stealth bomber

Russia's new fifth-generation bomber project has been put on the back burner and the plane won't enter production for nearly a decade, Zachary Keck reports for the National Interest citing Russian officials.

The Kremlin planned on introducing its fifth-generation PAK DA bomber into service starting in 2023. However, the PAK DA project has been pushed back and Russia will instead focus on production of an updated version of the Soviet-era Tu-160 supersonic nuclear bomber.

"According to the plans, serial production of the [Tu-160] aircraft new version [the Tu-160M2] is to be implemented starting from 2023," Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said at a press conference on July 17. "The PAK DA project will be somewhat shifted beyond [2023], otherwise there is no sense in it."

According to Russia Beyond the Headlines, the decision to begin constructing the updated Tu-160M2 at the expense of the fifth-generation PAK DA was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin in May.

"[Putin] and the Russian defense minister have taken a decision on reviving production of the Tu-160M aircraft," Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Air Force, General Viktor Bondarev said in May.

This decision to stall the development of the PAK DA and instead focus on the modernization of the Tu-160 reflects the broader difficulties that the Kremlin is facing in modernizing the country's military. Economic sanctions stemming from Russia's aggressive policies in Ukraine and a plunge in oil prices have undercut the Russian economy, leading to defense procurement problems across the military as a whole.

"The objective reasons for the failure to meet state defense procurement orders include restrictions on the supply of imported parts and materials in connection with sanctions, discontinuation of production and the loss of an array of technologies, insufficient production facilities," Borisov said on July 17 according to The Moscow Times.

According to the National Interest, this decision to modernize the Tu-160 in conjunction with Russia's economic distress could ultimately lead to the complete abandonment of the PAK DA. The improvements that the new TU-160M2 will feature include many designs that were intended for the PAK DA, and the modernized aircraft is "also expected to have a service life of around 40 years."

Among the upgrades for the TU-160M2 are a newly modernized engine that will increase the plane's flight range by over 600 miles, along with several new missiles that will enhance the plane's combat capabilities, IHS Jane's 360 notes.

"This will be essentially a new airplane, not a Tu-160 but a Tu-160M2," Borisov said in early June. "According to the plans, this will most likely happen sometime after 2023."

This isn't the only recent instance of Russia having to scale back on its military modernization ambitions. The Kremlin is also
having problems financing its hulking third-generation Armata tank. Harvard scholar Dmitry Gorenburg estimates that Russia will only be able to field a maximum of 330 Armata tanks by 2020, a fraction of the 2,300 originally planned.

The Kremlin's failure to follow through on projections for high-end weaponry is a common theme. There's a pattern of Russia announcing colossal projects before drastically scaling back its plans. In March, for example, Kremlin media outfit RT
announced that Russia would eventually be able to deploy 80 massive PAK TA transport superplanes - even though Russia not having constructed a single prototype of the aircraft.

In scaling back the Armata and these two advanced aircraft, the Kremlin clearly realizes that it is significantly easier and more cost efficient to continue to modify existing systems for future use - even if that isn't as exciting from a propaganda standpoint.

Actually makes sense to build more Tu160 rather than a new design. I think that is what Russia is doing.

Radar tech which uses a combination of low and high frequency along with optical detection will make stealth outdated. No need to spend billions on stealth.

Russians are highly practical people and will always rely on what gives the most bang for the buck.
