Asia Times Online :: Maybe that war with China isn't so far off

China, as it approaches a leadership transition, wants to avoid friction. However, the United States appears to welcome it and, in the election year, might even incite it.

The US, under the Obama administration and thanks in large part to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's team at the State Department, has been quite adept in putting China at a geopolitical disadvantage in Europe, Africa and Asia.

It is a valid question, however, to ask whether all this diplomatic and military tail-twisting is the best way to advance America's interests - which are meat and potatoes economic concerns, rather than pie-in-the-sky security scenarios, as Clinton made clear in her manifesto, America's Pacific Century.

China will loose in a pure military conflict, no matter what size, scope, technical front (don't you believe that "un-conventional warfare", nor those ballistic anti-satellite achievements, e.g. CCP itself won't), I will say.

And that's why CCP would rather prevent with everything, you will see.

All they need is hold breath till the US election season passed. It's NOT that long to kill anyone -- even some of China national (short-term) interest can be sacrificed. CCP leaders can easily find thousands reasons to justify their decision.

Notwithstanding the hype highlighted in the newsreport, the chances of any confrontation is bleak.

Tensions will continue, but things will not escalate to a flashpoint.

I agree many news reports are prone to generate excitement to get attention.

US China clashes in SCS including for Taiwan are only possibility. Clashed over Tibet or Afghanistan are the other scenarios but remote possibilities. Though the time for USA is running out as the Century progresses. Hurry up USA.

I think those analysists definitely agree with you except that their people don't want to start another recession by fighting another war. So they would say: " hurry up india".

Obama administration will do everything to win next year's election. A conflict with a major country is not in their best interest but tough stand against China is political correct and may score them a few points among American voters.
After the election, if they win, it will be business as usual.

This is what is going on in the world arena. Big players gamble on the lives of people in the developing countries in the name of security.

There will be no US-PRC conflict as long as (1) US companies can harvest the cheap labour in PRC and make profits, (2) PRC does not invade Taiwan, (3) PRC continues to collaborate politically with Russia and (4) PRC does not get into border conflicts with Russia, thus making Russia an enemy.
