Ather 450 to roll out of new Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu

The two-wheeler EV maker and Tamil Nadu government have signed an MoU for a 4 lakh square feet facility that will manufacture the Ather 450 and its lithium-ion batteries.

Ather Energy has signed an MoU for a 4,00,000 square feet electric vehicle manufacturing facility with the government of Tamil Nadu, at the Investment and Skill Development Conclave in Chennai. The EV two-wheeler maker has already announced plans to expand to 30 cities in the next few years and this MoU will help scale up production plans for the same. The built-up factory will be located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu and is supported by the state government under its EV policy. This MoU comes on the heels of a big push for electric two-wheelers by State & Central Governments, with an updated FAME policy, GST reduction and benefits for taxpayers on loans for electric two-wheeler purchase. The facility will not only cater to the EV manufacturing demand but also for Ather’s lithium-ion battery manufacturing, which is a key area of focus for the company going ahead. The investment is an opportunity for value creation in the sector and will create job opportunities for the region. More than 4,000 employees will be trained in requisite skills in the EV sector as a part of this initiative over the next five years. Ather Energy opened pre-orders in July 2019 for Chennai and pre-orders till December are full. The third batch of Ather 450s are now available, with deliveries expected in February-March 2020. The company has been offering test rides at their experience centre, Ather Space in Wallace Garden Street, Chennai. Ather has also been investing in setting up fast-charging infrastructure in Bengaluru and Chennai. Currently, Chennai has 10 fast charging points and more will be added in the coming months. Post the success in the two cities, Ather is gearing up to launch in Hyderabad, Pune, Delhi and Mumbai in the coming year. According to Tarun Mehta, CEO, Ather Energy, "Ather is rapidly scaling up and we need to expand our production capacity to meet the growing demand. The new unit will help us meet the demand for the next few years across the country. Tamil Nadu has been a hub for automobile manufacturing, and they have been working closely with us in their effort to build an EV ecosystem. A manufacturing facility at Hosur was an ideal choice considering that, it is close to our R&D facilities in Bengaluru and most of the existing and potential future supply base is operating in the region. The availability of a built-up option of our desired scale and proximity helped in the decision making."

Arms Merchants unwelcome in MOD, How do they make money

Since Modi came to power in 2014, he has slowly vanished commission agents or ‘Fixers’ in all the foreign military purchases. Their number was enormous. Each knew well in advance of the upcoming military purchases, they went ahead and contacted the foreign suppliers and negotiated a commission for fixing the deal in their favour. Almost, all of them were children of high government and political official who could peddle their influence to get the arms deal. A few retired military officials as high as Lt. Generals after retirement also joined the game. Each were chasing big money.

it probably was happening to lesser extent during Indira Gandhi era but at that time few purchases were made in the west, most purchases were from government to government purchases from Soviet Union. The big jump in purchasing Western arms was made during Rajiv Gandhi era when Bofor Scandal came to light. It is a Swedish gun peddled by Italian mafia, close to Sonia Gandhi to use her influence. It worked and Swedish artillery was sold to india, although high class, nevertheless with corrupt practices.

Then there were unending array of arms merchants who used one or the other kind of influence to sell arms to india and collect commission from the supplier for fixing the deal. Although twenty years back after AK Anthony became the Defence Minister, he instituted the most difficult procedures to procure the arms, still the rut continued. Now the Congressmen in power joined hands with the arms merchants and continued their trade. The last of corrupt practices to come to public knowledge was the executive helicopter purchase in which the serving air chief is a guilty party.

The whole payment of commission and bribes was so cleverly concealed that its discovery was next to impossible and if discovered details of payments were hard to determine hence not too many cases could be prosecuted in a court of law. Also laws were kept deliberately vague and easy to prevent prosecution. If there was a chance of prosecution, they ran to the welcoming arms of Great Briton with all their money.

Now Modi era has dawned. He is sworn to vanish corruption especially in Defence Purchases. He is doing his best to circumvent defence purchases thru commission agents. I believe, still if not as bad as before, but commission paying by ‘Fixers’ continues. Those habits of defence officials and politicians getting rich thru commission die hard. They all want to grab public money by hook or crook.

Can somebody with greater knowledge educate us that how the ‘Fixers’ are still doing their nefarious business?

The trade is simple. The fixers have just changed coats and has gone white. In other words, the practice got a legal cover as they are getting employed in Indian companies which are participating in military deals now.

Have a look at all the companies who are participating in arms tender now a days. They are not presenting anything exclusive on their own. At best they are presenting a JV product with IP rights being retained by the foreign OEM. We are not even presenting a original AR design and instead doing a JV with others for that.

Difference in between UPA era and now is only that, during UPA era, fixers were fixing deals directly with foreign firms, whereas now they are fixing deals for Indian firms on behalf of foreign firms. They have just changed the route. On other hand, Indian companies are paying hefty sums on license production or JV instead of investing in R&D. Example, have a look at ToT released by DRDO. How many front line manufacturing company have acquired them and what have they acquired?

Only thankful part in all these is, previously its the tax payers money, now its the company fund.

Samsung to set up India’s 1st mobile display plant

KOLKATA: Samsung is setting up India's first smartphone display manufacturing unit on the outskirts of Delhi.

The South Korean company is investing more than Rs 3,500 crore in this facility in Noida, as per a regulatory filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). It could later be expanded to manufacture displays of other devices as well.

The chaebol’s flagship India entity, Samsung India Electronics, has transferred a plot to a group company, Samsung Display, in its existing manufacturing plant area and has given a loan of Rs 3,500 crore to meet the investment and working capital requirement for establishing the production unit.

As per the regulatory disclosures, sourced from business intelligence platform Veratech Intelligence, Samsung India said it had incorporated a group entity, Samsung Display Noida, “with the principal business of manufacturing, assembling, processing and sales of displays (including their parts, components and accessories) for all types and sizes of electronic devices.”

Samsung said the plant would produce displays of mobile phones and IT display. However, an industry executive aware of the plans said the plant would initially produce displays for mobile phones, but could later extend it to laptops and televisions. The current investment will be enhanced as the capacities increase and Samsung Display sells the component to other brands like it does globally, he said. The first phase will become operational this year itself.

An email sent to Samsung India seeking comment remained unanswered till Friday press time.

This fresh investment will expand Samsung’s play in the component segment, with display panel being one of the largest components by value used in the manufacturing of mobile phones and televisions.

It has recently started the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturing unit in India, at a total outlay of Rs 4,915 crore. This enhanced investment comes at a time when the government wants to impose duties on imported displays for both smartphones and televisions to help boost its make in India efforts.

Veratech Intelligence founder Mohit Yadav said Samsung's decision to invest heavily to build cellphone displays in India was a significant boost to make in India. This highlights that Samsung is confident that consumption will increase in India, he said.

ET had written last year that Samsung Display wanted to set up a manufacturing unit in India and that another group entity, Samsung SDI India, was looking to start local production of smartphone batteries.

Samsung India has allotted the plot to Samsung Display for a consideration of Rs 92.02 crore as per the RoC disclosures. The Rs 3,500 crore loan is for three years.

Wo sab theek hai. Bar codes indicates Indian manufacturing with BIS mark. It seems its more or less than assembly at least rather than plane redistribution. Or simply imported chips in desi plastic cases?

Can't be more than assembly as even basic chips are limited in labs aren't mass produced except for ISRO and other PSUs.

BIS marking testing & certification of your electric products that it meets laid out standards. The product could be manufactured/assembled or simply re-branded. Much earlier BIS used to be called ISI (which confused hell lot of me as a kid, as TV's in the evening news would be giving news on ongoing murderous killings in Punjab and they being orchestrated by ISI and I was left thinking like why do we have products from same company in our house and why do they show advt of ISI helmets and heating rods on TV. Silly me :p)

Protronics/Boat they are following similar business model.

Samsung invests $500M to set up a smartphone display plant in India

Samsung, which once led India’s smartphone market, is investing $500 million in its India operations to set up a manufacturing plant on the outskirts of New Delhi to produce displays.

The company disclosed the investment and its plan in a filing to the local regulator earlier this month. The South Korean giant said the plant would produce displays for smartphones as well as a wide-range of other electronics devices.

In the filing, the company disclosed that it has allocated some land area from its existing factory in Noida for the new plant.

In 2018, Samsung opened a factory in Noida that it claimed was the world’s largest mobile manufacturing plant. For that factory, the company had committed to spend about $700 million.

The new plant should help Samsung further increase its capacity to produce smartphone components locally and access a range of tax benefits that New Delhi offers.

Those benefits would come in handy to the company as it faces off Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone vendor that put an end to Samsung’s lead in India.

Samsung is now the second largest smartphone player in India, which is the world’s second largest market with nearly 500 million smartphone users. The company in recent months has also lost market share to Chinese brand Realme, which is poised to take over the South Korean giant in the quarter that ended in December last year, according to some analysts.

TechCrunch has reached out to Samsung for comment.

My prediction is coming true. Whole electronics ecosystem will shift to India slowly. We need to focus on inviting chip makers now so that complete ecosystem is here and desi giants can rise up on this basis.

Tatas new nexon ev,which is surprisingly well rounded than I expected.

If govt. Were to allow tax breaks, desi ev vehicles have a chance of entering global market.
Do you know where Tata is getting the battery from? Which company is making that?
