Bhai, 5 seater and 7 seater both are different segments.

MG Hector , Kia Seltos , Hyundai Creta and Jeep Compass ,Tata Harrier all are 5 seater cars, priced in similar range and belong to the same 'C' segment of compact SUV.

All the above cars have beaten Harrier in sales. While comparing sales figures, they should be compared with cars of same segments.

A Tata Harrier starts at 12 lakhs whereas a Innova Crysta which is a full fledged 7 sweater SUV / MUV , a 'D' segment car starts at around 18 lakhs.

Both segments are different and buyers are different.

The number of seats is not the reason Harrier has failed , it's Tata's brand image wrt other brands like Jeep/ Hyundai/ Kia and MG.

Tata's have rolled out good , budget and safe cars but still people are going for cars from companies who are launching their first cars in the country as opposed to Tata which is an Indian company , why is that so? Is the question Tata should ask themselves.
What's the price of MG hector in India ? I believe its the same as Chinese Baojun 530 .

This car in China is from 77800RMB ~99800RMB , and have about 15000~20000RMB discount.

I own tata nexon it's a 1 number car and tata maintenance and all is pretty cheap too chassis of harrier is much better than Chinese Hector which only have show off features and no offroad capabilities neither that car have stability like tata harrier which have many features from luxurious segment jaguar cars. Tata is also pushing new harrier with sunroof.
TATA cars always have a very solid build quality nexon is the only car in its segment which have 5 star rating. And i don't think harrier is a flop car it's sale is pretty decent.

Main reason why TATA harrier is not doing good is because youth of india find TATA uncool.

Tata harrier is 138 bhp

While MG hector has 163 bhp.

Might be another reason.
TATA doesn't want to tell as it will hit sales of their Discovery and people are unaware that Harrier is actually build on Land Rover Discovery/evogue platform.

While Discovery is 4x4 Harrier is 2x4. It uses same engine as Jeep compass but with lower power. The day they launch 4x4 and use 175bhp Jeep compass engine and educate people on its Land rover discovery origin it will sell like hot cakes.....

One should not compare the car prices between India and China. Cars are usually much cheaper there. But the Number place cost a bomb there. Many cities issues numbers in lots which increases the over all price owing the cars.

China have 10% Automobile consumption tax.
About 10 cities have plate cost , but most of China city are free to get a plate.

I live in Guangzhou , a plate is about 20000RMB , but if you purchase a hybrid or elec car , plate is free.

They openly claim Harrier is designed on Land Rover / Range Rover platform.

About Rs 30,000 crore tenders cancelled to promote Make in India products: DPIIT Secretary
DPIIT has intervened to change conditions in those tenders to promote 'Made in India' goods.
By PTI | Updated: Feb 17, 2020, 07.09 PM IST

DPIIT Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra
NEW DELHI: Government tenders worth about Rs 30,000 crore were cancelled because of discriminatory practices being followed, a top official said on Monday.

Restrictive and discriminative tender practices prevent participation of domestic companies in government procurement, hurting 'Make in India' initiatives.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) from time to time has intervened to change conditions in those tenders in order to promote 'Made in India' goods.

"Many of the restrictive and discriminative tender practices have been identified. Almost Rs 30,000 crore (worth) of tenders have been cancelled because of discriminatory practices," DPIIT Secretary Guruprasad Mohapatra said here at a function.

He said the vigilance cases have been ordered by the Central Vigilance Commission wherever the department felt that a tender has been floated deliberately with a mala fide intention to deny a level-playing field to an Indian player.

The department is taking every step for effective implementation of public procurement order, 2017, to promote 'Made in India' products.

The government issued the order on June 15, 2017, to promote manufacturing and production of goods and services in India and enhance income and employment in the country.

Under the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order, it was envisaged that all central government departments, their attached or subordinate offices and autonomous bodies controlled by the Government of India should ensure that purchase preference be given to domestic suppliers in government procurement.

The secretary said government departments and public sector companies should give preference to local players. "The government has taken many initiatives like Make in India, ease of doing business, investor facilitation, FDI reforms, new infrastructure creation and various outreach programmes to increase share of manufacturing in GDP and create 100 million jobs by 2024," Mohapatra said.

PM Modi Pushes for Reduction in Imports in Defence Sector

SOURCE: PTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said India should reduce dependence on imports and take forward the “Make in India” initiative to build its domestic capabilities for designing, developing and manufacturing state-of-the-art defence equipment. He made the remarks while chairing a meeting to deliberate the potential reforms to ensure a robust and self-reliant defence industry in India that caters to short and long term needs of the armed forces. In the meeting, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman and others, Modi also discussed initiatives to give a boost to the economy in the backdrop of COVID-19, an official statement said. The discussions involved reforming of the functioning of the ordnance factories, streamlining procurement procedures, focused resource allocation and encouraging research and development. Attracting investment in critical defence technologies and promotion of exports also came up in the meeting. The prime minister laid emphasis on positioning India among the top countries of the world in defence and aerospace sectors, from design to production, with active participation of public and private sector fulfilling the twin objectives of self-reliance and exports. He reviewed the proposed reforms for attracting domestic and foreign investment in defence sector. It was discussed that defence expenditure be “economised” and the savings channelised for strategic defence capital acquisition. Issues relating to defence procurement processes, offset policies, indigenisation of spares, transfer of technology, attracting global original equipment manufacturers to establish manufacturing facilities in India, expanding our presence in international supply chains, were also deliberated. For India to emerge as a global leader in defence manufacturing, focus on the export of quality and state-of-the-art equipment, systems, platforms was also emphasised. Modi directed that India should reduce dependence on imports and take forward the “Make in India” initiative to build its domestic capabilities for designing, developing and manufacturing defence equipment. He emphasised on initiatives to promote export of defence products along with industry participation in global defence product value chain and to create an environment that encourages research and development and rewards innovation

Sources said that the PM’s direction to economise defence expenditure to focus on capital acquisition could lead to accelerating strategic manufacturing projects that are already under process.

NEW DELHI: A new procurement procedure in the works and strategic manufacturing projects will be key to implementing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plan to position India among the top defence producing nations in the world and give a boost to the economy as it battles with Covid-19.

In a review of the defence industry on Thursday evening, the PM emphasised on self-reliance and exports – twin objectives that will require the new procurement procedure that is in the final stages of implementation to give an advantage to domestic firms involved in manufacturing.
The policy, sources said, will reflect this focus and direct imports are being placed at the very bottom of the priority of procurement and Indian designed developed and manufactured products will be given the highest importance.
While this was reflected in earlier policies as well, projects have barely taken off under the route and the plan now is to focus on how Indian companies with intellectual property rights could be given a pricing advantage as well.

Though the industry is wary about an anticipated budget cut in capital procurement, the renewed emphasis on exports by the PM in a meeting with key stakeholders including the defence, finance and home ministers has given fresh hope that additional markets could make up a slow down in domestic demand.
India has accelerated its exports over the past four years to become the 23rd largest arms exporter in the world but is way behind eastern neighbour China that is now among the top defence producing nations in the world. The glimmer of hope is that if adequate measures are put in place to attract foreign investments, India could significantly increase exports in collaboration with western defence giants that may want to bring down production costs.

Independent analysis done by defence majors show that if the scale is large enough, shifting manufacturing bases to India in the defence and aerospace sector can result in as much as 10% reduction in costs.
Sources said that the PM’s direction to economise defence expenditure to focus on capital acquisition could lead to accelerating strategic manufacturing projects that are already under process. The Strategic Partnership model, which is currently focused on producing naval helicopters, submarines and fighter jets in India in collaboration with foreign nations has the potential to boost domestic companies into the global league. At current pace however, none of the three projects are likely to be finalised in less than two years but an urgent push could cut down the timeline significantly.
