The IL-76 is a huge aircraft. IAF might have need for smaller AEW&CS platforms too, which can operate from smaller airbases. The IN will probably love a smaller platform too.
It depends on what is required. The IL-76 carries onboard supercomputers and has 11 workstations. The DRDO AWACS, Erieye and even the Greenpine based Eitam have 5 workstations which gives lesser capability. The smaller aircraft do not do signals processing in real time like the Phalcon does.

CABS touches 21 | Spirited scientists await prying plane | Sub-systems for surveillan

The Centre for Air-Borne Systems (CABS) touched 21 silently with a story matching that of the proverbial Phoenix. With a morale virtually reduced to ground-zero following the tragic crash of their pet prototype plane Airborne Surveillance Platform (ASP) in 1999, today the CABS has made most of its detractors run for cover. Thanks to the decision-makers at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) HQ in Delhi, the CABS got a fresh lease of life in 2004, when they bagged the prestigious Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system project.

With the Indian defence R&D sector often riddled with morale-stripping tales of failed and delayed missions, the CABS workforce smartly chose to lie low, fixing their focus on business hours. In 2007 when its customer (air force) 'finally' made up their minds (operational requirements) as to how intelligent their prying plane should be, the scientists began tweaking technology that would eventually put India into an elite club.

As this piece goes to print, Team CABS is at a striking distance from embedding smart systems onboard the Embraer-built EMB-145I AEW&C platform. The first plane will make a touchdown in Bangalore in June. When fully loaded, it would detect, identify, and classify threats present in the surveillance area and act as a command and control centre to support air defence operations.

Giving heads-up on the project to Express, CABS Director S Christopher said that all the sub-systems for surveillance are getting ready. "The primary radar, electronic support measure, communication support measure, line-of-sight and SATCOM data links have reached the final stages of development. They are now in the test and integration phase," Christopher said. He said the lab is gearing up for a formal Raising Day event soon.

Through this programme, the CABS has gifted India critical gen-next technologies. "The core competence is generated in the field of Mark XII SSR systems, tactical software for network-centric operations and in design-development of complex avionics systems. A few of the building block, technologies and patents indigenously-realised can be used for several spin-offs and exports,"says G Elangovan, DRDO Chief Controller (R&D), Avionics.

Facilities established for the AEW&C project like the Planar Near Field Measurement (PNFM), System Test and Integration Rig (STIR), EMI/EMC Test Laboratory, Lightning Test Facility (LTF), Highly Accelerated Life Test (HALT), Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) chamber and the Flight Test Centre could well aid CABS' future prime prying projects

ECS, IFR, auxiliary power units, internal fuel tanks, SATCOMs and antennae. India's Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) -- the laboratory spearheading the programme -- supplied Embraer with the dorsal unit (electronics) and the Ku-band SATCOM dome, while the Defence Avionics Research Establishment (DARE), CABS and the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) supplied in antennae for ESM, CSM and U/VHF.

2.

New Software and avionics for better communication to all assets around awacs, So that any ind of action is well coordinated and effective..

ZZZ. The journo has confused the terms. AWACS was the old name for AEW&C. People still use the term AWACS because it is easier to say and type.
There is no confusion when the terms refer to the same thing. You critised Vladimir for using the term AFAR for RBE2 AA when you know it means AESA. It is all a bit boorish.

Proposed antenna locations? It only goes into the Wedgetail and maybe a forward looking array. Placing less powered units on wing and tail tips is useless as it doesn't have the range to get coverage.

Quite moronic of you to point that petty difference when you don't even understand what was it that I corrected. Vladimir said AFAR, I said it was APAR. PAR is the Russian abbreviation for Phased Array Radar. A or P before PAR would mean active or passive. I only pointed out a spelling error.

Maybe he made a typo or it is a Russian cyrillic like how VVS in English is BBC in Russian cyrillic. Perhaps he meant to say Fixed array, then AFAR would make sense. Perhaps Vlad and I are both right.

If you read the article the journo is confused between the terms AEW&C and AWACS. He is saying both are different, unlike what you said.

All I said was the term AWACS is no longer in use in military parlance. The new term is AEW&C. It is a very old change.

Quite moronic for you to go around pointing out synonymous terminology when no one asked you in the first place.

AWACS is not only still in use, it is the terminology of USAF...

Factsheets : E-3 Sentry (AWACS)

You need to do a lot of reading. AWACS was the program name for the E-3 Sentry. Like how the PAKFA is for Russia's 5th gen fighter or how LCA is for us. The E-2 is not called AWACS even if it essentially performs the same functions and neither is the Wedgetail. Figure it out.

AEW&C is the real name. AWACS is no longer used.

Nobody calls the J-20 or F-22 as PAKFA. Similarly nobody calls the A-50, 737AEW&C, E-2, Eitam or KJ-2000 as AWACS. Only E-3 is called AWACS.

Go figure out the difference between program name and platform name. Then figure out why I said it. You are a leech.

DRDO seeks nod for domestic AWACS - Indian Express

Buoyed by the success of its indigenous eye-in-the-sky last December, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has pushed for a homemade version of the advanced Airborne Warning & Control System (AWACS) that can peer deep into enemy territory from higher altitudes.

Days before testing the maiden flight of its Airborne Early Warning & Control system in Brazil, the DRDO shot off a proposal to the Defence Ministry seeking Rs 850 crore to "design and develop AWACS for the IAF".

The DRDO's proposal does not identify a technology partner but keeps open the option of taking on consultants as and when required. The aim is to develop long-range radars with onboard command, control and communications for both tactical and air defence forces from higher altitudes, says the proposal sent on November 21.

The AWACS is extremely useful for India in large conflicts as it surveys a wider expanse of airspace and coastlines, and can monitor large number of aircraft and warships from a greater height than the AEWCs. Moreover, it can provide a 360-degree coverage of aircraft movement and troop build-up nearly 400 km inside neighbouring terrains compared to normal 250 km (375 km extended) detection with a 240-degree vision of AEWCs.

The DRDO proposal highlights this ability of AWACS to track multiple targets through large distances, said sources.

So far, India has got three Phalcon AWACS, the last of which was delivered in mid-2011, from Israel's Elta. A major follow-on contract has been rumored since April 2008 but the contract is yet to be signed.

Armed with more than double the number of control operator stations, AWACS can trap more electronic intelligence and communications intercepts from air as well as maritime and key border stations.

The Rs 1,800-crore AEWC development programme, approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security in October 2004, was "a major milestone" towards realising the dream of indigenous AEWC to put India into a select club of countries.
Try reading the article again and figure out who is the bigger moron, you or the journalist.

India successfully tests second indigenous airborne radar flight
April 05, 2012

New Delhi : New Delhi, April 5 (IANS) India''s second indigenous airborne warning radar, formidable eyes in the sky, built aboard a Brazilian Embraer plane has been successfully flight tested, an official said Thursday.

The test of the Airborne Early Warning and Control System (AEW&C), developed by India''s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), took place at the San Jose dos Campos in Brazil.

AEW&C is a radar fitted on a plane that provides intelligence on not only enemy aircraft taking off far across the border but also incoming missiles and troop movement on the ground.

It is a force multiplier in the sense it can enable quicker decision-making by troop commanders for responding to threats before time.

"Maiden flight of the second fully modified aircraft for the indigenously developed AEW&C was held Thursday in Brazil," the DRDO official said in a statement.

"The necessary mission systems and components, including the dummy AAAU (Active Antenna Array Unit) are successfully fitted on board Embraer EMB 145I aircraft," he said.

An elated DRDO chief V.K. Saraswat said: "Good show, well done and congratulations!"

Saraswat credited team work for the success after the "modified aircraft fitted with the dummy antenna unit performed very well".

The flight marks an important milestone in the AEW&C programme. The aircraft will be delivered to India in June.

The other mission systems will then be integrated on to the aircraft, and mission system flight trials are likely to commence from November.

DRDO Chief Controller (Avionics) G. Elangovan congratulated the team of Centre for Air Borne Systems (CABS) and associated work centres and also the team at Embraer.

CABS director S. Christopher, who is also the programme director for AEW&C, said the system had been indigenously developed in a consortium mode with the help of DRDO and Indian industrial partners.

CABS, a DRDO lab, is the nodal laboratory entrusted with the task of delivering the AEW&C system.

The external mission systems were developed indigenously and fitted on the aircraft. The rest of the internal systems too will be integrated into the aircraft on arrival to India.

DRDO has signed a contract with Embraer to procure three EMB 145I, and this aircraft will be the first to be delivered.

DRDO has not much involvement in this stage, because all the internal systems they developed are still to be integrated and tested. So far Embraer integrated the dummy antenna and sensors to flight test the aircraft and see what effect these external changes have. Lets hope that they will arrive in India soon and DRDO can really provide what they promised. We badly needs these AWACS!
