Guys, Need some help.
Was debating with someone on which is the worlds first Modernday Commando/SOF unit. And My answer was the German Brandenburg Brigade. 1939 - Unit that spearheaded the taking of Poland and Invasion of Scandanavia.
IMO the British/Belgian Paras, SAS et al came much later.
Anybody know of any commando type unit older than that?
Lol Answering my own post (feel free to correct me)
In the Modern Sense of Orbat (Detached Unit) and Employment i could find the following:
1. British Indian Army: Gurkha Scouts (1890s)
2. Royal British Army: Lovat Scouts 1899
3. Philippine Revolutionary Army: Luna Sharpshooters 1899
4. Royal Italian Army - Italian Arditi - WWI - 1917
5. German Army - Brandenburg Brigade (1939) - First Airborne Troops (used Gliders in their taking of poland)
6. British Army: Special Service Brigade 'Commandos' (1940)
7. British Army: Special Air Service 1940
8. USMC: Marine Raiders 1942
9. US Army: Darby's Rangers / Army Rangers
9. British Indian Army: Chindits 1943
Rogers Rangers - 1751 - Do they count?
