Want to start this thread to see what military equipment India can buy for its forces for all three services branch. Anything from Guns to Missiles, Boats to Subs etc.
Money not an issue, logistics not an issue. Just the best that money can buy.
Which are the systems that the ones put forth can replace, or create a whole new capability.
This way we all will get to learn of the latest weapons systems.

Consider as an RFP :)

Maybe we can one day compile our wish list and send it to MoD :)

Yusuf, i think we have to be realistic here. Lets not make this a fantasy thread. Its better if we take money and logistics into consideration. Lets assume which weapon systems we will buy taking into account money and logistics, but eliminating factors like corruption, red-tape etc.

Lets see which weapon systems we will buy if we were the defence minister, and had the green light from parliament to buy whatever necessary to modernise the armed forces, but within a reasonable budget.

Don't you think this thread will end up encouraging wet dreams then ??? People aspiring for stuff which people may never sell to us or stuff which we clearly cannot afford...

My intention is to just learn about different weapons system and their competitors. Thats the reason why i said money no issue. Even if it is fanciful so be it. All kinds of weapons systems included.
You can change the name of the thread to Discussions of various weapons system.

Well sometimes its good to dream. India is going to be strong and rich country over the next half a century. We never know what it can buy and what it cannot. Besides i also talked of creating a new capability for our forces which will obviously require logistics maintenance etc.

well ATV-I, II and III ASAP, then SL Agni-III and Agni IIIA to start with, new improve INSAS rifle (Kalantak) and body protection equitment for soilders, with digital communication and thermal imaging. Better equitment for fighting militancy and terrorists.

More of UAVs some helicopter type UAVs with weapons on board to take out terrorists.

Just to start with.............

I think equipment for fighting terrorism has to be number one priority. This includes the best body armour, close-combat weapons and surveillance equipment money can buy. Lets make sure that we do our share to protect the men who give their lives to protect us.

I would also like to see all our borders walled, electric-fenced and mined, and monitored by a large surveillance network, so that terrorists and refugees can't just waltz in.

We also need stealth fighters with state-of-the art bunker busting munitions to take out pak nuclear installations, should the need arise. Back this up with a large, multi-tiered ABM network.

Once we have all these, then we can concentrate on acquirng weapons for conventional war.

FGM-148 Javelin

Ok, I would like to see the IA get its hand of this one. I saw in Discovery long back. Was very impressed with this system.

Javelin is a fire-and-forget missile with lock-on before launch and automatic self-guidance. The system takes a top-attack flight profile against armored vehicles (attacking the top armor which is generally thinner) but can also take a direct-attack mode for use against buildings or fortifications. This missile also has the ability to engage helicopters in the direct attack mode. The missile reaches a peak altitude of 150m in top attack mode and 50m in direct fire mode. The missile is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker. The tandem warhead is fitted with two shaped charges: a precursor warhead to detonate any explosive reactive armor and a primary warhead to penetrate base armor. The Javelin was used in the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, with devastating effects on the Iraqi version of T-72s and Type 69 tanks.
The missile is ejected from the launcher so that it reaches a safe distance from the operator before the main rocket motors ignite; a "soft launch arrangement". This makes it harder to identify the launcher and allows it to be fired from within buildings; however, back-blast from the launch tube still poses a hazard to nearby personnel. Thanks to this "fire and forget" system, the firing team may move on as soon as the missile has been launched.
The missile system is carried most often by a two man team consisting of a gunner and an ammo bearer, although it can be fired with just one person if necessary. While the gunner aims and fires the missile, the ammo bearer scans for prospective targets and watches for threats such as enemy vehicles and troops.

The portable system is easy to separate into main components and easy to set up when needed. Compared to more cumbersome anti-tank weapon systems, the difference is noticeable. For example, a TOW requires a heavy tripod stand, a bulky protective case for the thermal sight, a larger, longer launch tube, and requires much more time to assemble and prepare. The Javelin (although very heavy) is lighter than other missiles and their necessary parts.
Although the CLU's thermal imaging may hinder aiming, its thermal targeting allows the Javelin to be a fire-and-forget system. This gives the firer an opportunity to be out of sight and possibly moving to a new angle to fire from, or out of the area by the time the enemy realizes they are under attack. This is much safer than using a wire-guided system because the firer must stay at the same location the missile was fired from and guide the missile into the target.
Another advantage is the Javelin's power at impact. The missile has a tandem shaped charge in its warhead that is made to penetrate reactive armor. The Javelin was created with the intent to be able to penetrate any tank armor and was tested on the M1 Abrams Tank. With the top attack mode it has an even greater ability to destroy the tank because it can attack where most tanks are the weakest.
The soft launch capability of the Javelin allows it to have only a minimal backblast area. This enables the Javelin to be fired from inside a wide variety of structures. This gives the Javelin advantages in urban fighting over the widely used AT4, which has a very large backblast area, although this is lessened in the AT4 CS. A large backblast area would seriously injure personnel if fired from inside a small structure.
The missile also has a greater range than the system it replaces, the M47 Dragon.

The difference between the two is that the NAG is carried on armored carriers and the Javelin is Man portable. Can be used to take out sections of buildings where enemies/terrorists/snipers are hiding.
Top attack is becoming standard for most anti tank missile. Doesnt mean they are the same.

Why the Javelin? It is not a weapon system proven in combat. If you want a man-portable anti-tank guided missile, then 9M133 Kornet, should be a cheap and reliable alternative. Though its range is less than the Javelin, it is combat proven. If it can penetrate Merkava frontal armor (with ERA) in the 2006 Lebanon War, it can do it to any other damn tank.
