United Airlines faces boycott for ‘Islamophobia’ at 30,000 feet

CHICAGO: Hundreds of people have pledged to boycott United Airlines after a Muslim passenger alleged discrimination due to Islamophobia over an unopened can of Diet Coke onboard the American airliner.

Tahera Ahmad's Facebook post over the "clear" discrimination went almost immediately went viral on Saturday.

The Muslim chaplain at Chicago's Northwestern University was onboard a flight this weekend when she asked for an unopened can of soda for hygienic reasons and says was told, "Well, I'm sorry. I just can't give you an unopened can, so no Diet Coke for you."

When the man next to her allegedly got an unopened beer can from the in-flight service, Ahmad said she was told something even more inflammatory: "We are unauthorized to give unopened cans to people, because they may use it as a 'weapon' on the plane."

Ahmad said her fellow passengers were of no help. In her post, she says she was told by another male passenger across the aisle that "you Muslim, you need to shut ... up" and used an offensive word.

He said she knew she would use it as a "weapon" so she should better shut up.

"I am sitting on a United airlines flight in the air 30,000ft above and I am in tears of humiliation from discrimination... #IslamophobiaISREAL," she posted.

Ahmad did not respond to multiple requests for comment, but Muslim activists took to social media to call the alleged incident an "inexcusable" act of bigotry as other social media users said they would boycott United Airlines based on what they interpreted as open discrimination.

United Airlines spokesman Charles Hobart told Guardian that the airline was attempting to contact Ahmad in order to "get a better understanding of what occurred during the flight".

He said United was discussing the alleged incident with Shuttle America, the airline's regional partner that operated the flight.

Federal Aviation Administration policy forbids carrying on unopened alcoholic beverages, but does not appear to have a specific "unopened can" regulation, the report said.

Ahmad told Chicago Sun-Times that she received an apology from the flight attendant on behalf of herself and the other passenger, saying that the United employee had "acknowledged it was unethical and said he never should have said anything".

Hardly a surprising occurrence considering the rampant Islamophobia that runs among Americans.

Muslim Flight Attendant Suspended After Refusing To Serve Alcohol
A Muslim flight attendant says she was suspended by airline ExpressJet for refusing to serve alcohol, a practice she says is against her religious beliefs. Charee Stanley filed a discrimination complaint in Detroit with the Equal Employment Opportunity commission, in an effort to get reinstated to her job, CNN reported.

Stanley, 40, had worked for ExpressJet for three years prior to her suspension. About two years ago, she converted to Islam and was able to work out an arrangement with co-workers as a workaround to accommodate alcoholic beverage orders from passengers, according to WWJ-AM.

However, Stanley was later suspended after another attendant filed a complaint on Aug. 2, which also referencing her headscarf and books with foreign writings, according to Lena Masri, an attorney for the Council of American Islamic Relations Michigan.

"What this case comes down to is no one should have to choose between their career and religion and it's incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel they can practice their religion freely," Masri told CNN.

Following the complaint, ExpressJet sent a letter to Stanley on Aug. 25, which revoked her religious accommodation and placed her on administrative leave for 12 months. Following the period, her position could be terminated, according to the Council of American-Islamic Relations.

"I don't think that I should have to choose between practicing my religion properly or earning a living," Stanley told CBS News. "I shouldn't have to choose between one or the other because they're both important."

ExpressJet, which is based in College Park, Georgia, issued the following statement to CNN:

"At ExpressJet, we embrace and respect the values of all of our team members. We are an equal opportunity employer with a long history of diversity in our workforce. As Ms. Stanley is an employee, we are not able to comment on her personnel matters."

Did not she know that she has to serve the passangers alcoholic drinks before she become an air hostess? What next a guy will take a job at Burger joint and then will refuse to serve Bacon Sandwiches?
