Our COIN forces & IA badly needs HALE drones like Phantom ray. Forces receive live updates in patches in current situation if I'm not wrong. A drone which can stay in the air for days will be massively helpful. That is the 'air support' forces need, not some bomb truck.

Also just remaining 200 militants in JK now should be flushed out. I do not recall any recent updates on Rustom HALE :(

It says Rustom HALE endurance to be 12-15 hours.

Would love to see MQ-4C working along with P8Is in IN. NG did presentation for Navy soemtime back in response to the RFI issued in late 2010.

India's Rustom-1 UAV Makes 5th Flight

The Indian RUSTOM-1 unmanned air system made its 5th successful flight this morning, flying for 25 minutes at 2300-ft AGL at a speed 100 Knots. The 661-kg RUSTOM-1 flew first in 2010. The UAS can attain a maximum speed of 150-knots, 22,000-feet and endurance of 12-15 hours with an operating range of 250 km when fully developed.

uav should fly at high altitude like 10 km or above, this low flying ie not even 8 km alti uav will make it useless in war as it will be shot down easily.

this uav can only be used in surveillance

this UAV is meant to be used in surveillance only, not war, the primary purpose of these UAV's is that they help in patrolling the border, if we are able to develop UAV's in good numbers, we can significantly reduce the infiltration from the other side....

India is developing an umanned aerial vehicle (UAV) similar to American Predator drones with an investment of Rs1,500 crore and planning an unmanned combat vehicles, a key official involved in the project said on Monday.

UAV Rustom-2 project is spread over 66 months, Director of Bangalore-based Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), a Defence Research and said in Bangalore.

Rustom-2 would have a wing-span of 21-odd metres and an endurance of 24-hours-plus, as against seven-odd metres and 12-15 hours of Rustom-1, which has already completed five flights. ADE is the nodal lab for these projects.

Rustom-2 would have new payloads such as synthetic aperture radar, maritime patrol radar and collision avoidance system, among others, he said.

"With its capability and the amount of payload it can carry, it (Rustom-2) compares well with (American) Predator (drones) and other class of vehicles," Krishnan said.

The Predator is a nickname given to one in a series of UAVs, or pilotless drones, operated by the Pentagon, the CIA and, increasingly, other agencies of the US federal government such as the border patrol.

Asked if India is also developing unmanned aerial combat vehicles, he said "we are thinking of that one. Some plans will be there".

Meanwhile, Rustom-1, the Medium Altitude Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MALE – UAV), would be integrated with payloads by next month, Krishnan said.

"We have demonstrated all the flying characteristics of the Rustom more or less in the final form".

Krishnan said the Indian Army is keenly watching the developments of Rustom-1, which has the potential military missions like reconnaissance and surveillance, target acquisition, target designation, communications relay, battle damage assessment and signal intelligence.

India has also started working on solar-power UAVs but is still at the R&D stage.

DRDO's Chief Controller (Aero), A Subhananda Rao, said this solar-powered UAV would have an endurance of "almost one week".

"Solar power will have to be harnessed and energy converters of higher efficiency will have to be designed," Rao told reporters.

"Lot of technological challenges are there. But definitely we will be getting into that. We are making a case for project sanction", he added.

this UAV will be only used for surveillance purposes, not for attack, DRDO has a habit of exaggerating its accomplishments....

Argus One UAV Completes Flight Testing With New Pod Bay and Propulsion System




World Surveillance Group has announced that the Argus One UAV, equipped with a newly developed pod bay and integrated propulsion unit, has successfully completed a series of flight tests in preparation for upcoming flight tests and demonstrations at the Oklahoma Training Center - Unmanned Systems in Lawton, Oklahoma and the U.S. Department of Energy Nevada Test Site.

The flight tests were conducted under tower control at Easton Airport by WSGI's technical partner Eastcor Engineering ("ECE").

The newly developed pod bay was re-designed and constructed with new electronics, a more powerful propulsion unit and improved propeller functionality for better handling and maneuverability.

It is outfitted with proprietary electronics, including custom built PC-boards running newly developed command and control software that was architected specifically for the Argus One UAV platform. The pod bay continues to be designed to be "plug and play" for swift and easy integration of different payloads for various airship applications and missions.

The recent flight exercises in Maryland included various tests on the newly developed pod bay and integrated propulsion system.

The Argus One airship was flown and monitored for two hours with no evidence of fatigue or stress resulting from the integration of the new pod bay and propulsion system.

In these flight test exercises, the Argus One airship demonstrated significantly more maneuverability and an improved ability to withstand the winds while aloft.
