Deputy PM: Turkish warplanes shoot down Syrian helicopter

Turkish warplanes shot down a Syrian helicopter on Monday after it violated Turkish airspace and are continuing to patrol the border, Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç said.

"Today at 1420 (1120 GMT) an Mi-17 helicopter belonging to Syria violated the Turkish border in the Guveççi area of Yayladağı in Hatay province by 2 km," Arınç told reporters in Ankara after a regular cabinet meeting.

"It was repeatedly warned by our air defence elements. When the violation continued, our planes ... hit the helicopter at 1425 with a missile causing it to fall on Syrian soil."

Earlier reports said opposition fighters shot dead two pilots after they ejected themselves after their chopper was hit.

After violation, a number of Turkish fighter jets from a Malatya military air base dispatched to the area and shot down the helicopter, Arınç said.

After a Turkish jet was downed, possibly by Syrian air defense units, near Syrian air space over the Mediterranean in June last year, Turkey warned Syria that it would hit Syrian air force elements that got too near the Turkish border. In November last year, Turkish fighter jets scrambled as a Syrian warplane bombed the town of Ras al-Ain near the Turkish border as part of an air assault to dislodge opposition fighters.

The country's rules of engagement changed after Syria shot down a Turkish plane in June 2012. Turkish officials did not publicly announce details of the revised rules of engagement, but some reports claimed Turkish forces would fire on any Syrian forces approaching within five kilometers of the Turkish border on the Syrian side.

In October the same year, a shell killed five civilians in the Akçakale district of Şanlıurfa province. To protect Turkey, the United States, the Netherlands and Germany deployed batteries of ground-to-air NATO Patriot missiles and hundreds of soldiers along the Syrian border in southern Turkey at the request of Ankara.

Turkey, which shares a 900-km (560-mile) border with Syria, is sheltering a quarter of the 2 million people who have fled the Syrian conflict.

Chemical weapons used in Syria on 'large scale' - UN report

Chemical weapons were used on a relatively large scale in the Ghouta area of Damascus in Aug.21 attack, the UN investigators' report says. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has submitted report at a closed-door meeting in New York.

"The Mission has concluded that chemical weapons were used on a relatively large scale in the Ghouta area of Damascus in the context of the ongoing conflict in Syria. The attack resulted in numerous casualties, particularly among civilians," Ban Ki-moon said in a statement published on the UN website.

The UN Secretary General said the conclusions drawn in the report are "overwhelming and indisputable".

"The facts speak for themselves," he added.

The UN team's report is based on interviews and eyewitnesses' accounts which investigators collected at the scene.

The UN investigators spoke to more than 50 survivors, medical personnel and first responders. They also recorded individuals' symptoms and took biomedical samples, including from hair, urine and blood.

Local medical staff documented many patients' symptoms consistent with nerve agent exposure. A number were "were diagnosed with intoxification" and "clearly showed symptoms associated with sarin, including loss of consciousness, shortness of breath, blurred vision, eye inflammation, vomiting and seizures," the report said.

All the samples the UN collected were examined at four laboratories designated by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the report said.

It has been revealed that 85 percent of the blood samples tested positive for sarin. The UN team said that almost all of the 36 patients who showed signs of poisoning tested positive for sarin.

Environmental samples also revealed the use of sarin, the UN scientists said. "A majority of the rockets or rocket fragments recovered were found to be carrying sarin."

And where do you suggest rebels got two battalions of chem rockets? CIA has proof it was fired from Assad's lines. Enough of the silly conspiracies, my nation is preparing for war so lets take this seriously.

They got them from KSA.

Your "CIA has proof" is as much of a conspiracy theory as mine is.

Don't take your nation's marketing strategy of it's military wares in guise of war too seriously. Anyway, all France ever does is to man rear bases once US has captured the territory, and drop bombs once US has achieved complete air dominance and DEAD.

Are the French with the US this time round because they are scared of US punitive action by renaming French fries in the US Congress canteen as potato finger chips?

Saw on TV...

UN investigators say Sarin was used, but it was not their job to figure out which side used them.

Deliberate obfuscation to protect KSA Wahabists, and bu extension, Al Qaeda, by US led UN.

Syria's Sarin More Potent Than What Saddam Had, UN Says

The 41 page report found that "chemical weapons were used on a relatively large scale in the Ghouta area of Damascus" on Aug. 21 and concludes that "the attack resulted in numerous casualties, particularly among civilians."

U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon told reporters that the results are "overwhelming and indisputable. The facts speak for themselves."

The head of the inspection team, Prof. Åke Sellström, told reporters that quality of sarin found in Ghouta was of a higher quality than that used by Iraq's Saddam Hussein in his chemical weapons program.

While the team of experts did not place responsibility for the attack, the Obama administration said that given the evidence presented, it was clear that the Assad regime is responsible.

"The findings in the report"¦do support the conclusion the world already reached based on overwhelming evidence that the Assad regime was responsible for the chemical weapons attack on Aug. 21," White House press secretary Jay Carney said.

"It reinforces what we believe was already overwhelming evidence, not only that a chemical weapons attack occurred on a large scale, that sarin nerve agent was used, and that the only group capable of delivering that attack, both in the means that it was delivered through surface- to-surface rockets and using the agent that was use, was the Assad regime," said Carney.

The United States Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power pointed out where evidence the United States has presented, match evidence from the U.N. report.

"We have associated one type of munition cited in the U.N. report – 122mm rockets – with previous regime attacks," said Power. "We have reviewed thousands of open source videos related to the current conflict in Syria and have not observed the opposition manufacturing or using this style of rocket."

Syria chemical weapons attack: Rockets used bore Russian writing, United Nations report reveals

Rockets used in the Syrian chemical weapons attack bore Russian writing, United Nations inspectors have revealed.

The discovery of Cyrillic characters was disclosed in a long-awaited report today that also said there was "clear and compelling evidence" that they carried the nerve agent Sarin.

Russia is a strong ally of Bashar al-Assad and the disclosure came as Moscow was at loggerheads with the West over how to ensure the brutal dictator gives up his chemical arsenal.

Unveiling the report, UN chief Ban Ki-moon said that the attack in the capital Damascus was a war crime and the worst chemical weapons strike for 25 years.

"This was a grave crime and those responsible should be brought to justice," he said.

The report stopped short of blaming Assad but Britain and France seized on it as fresh evidence that the tyrant was responsible for the August 21 attack that killed hundreds.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said that the "very damning" findings were "fully consistent" with Britain's view that Assad and his henchmen were behind the atrocity.

"We have always believed that this was the work, the responsibility of the Assad regime and everything we can see in this report is fully consistent with that."

Mr Kerry said the UN resolution had to be "forceful, accountable, transparent and timely".

And he claimed that all the countries involved, including Russia, had agreed that military intervention could be an option "should diplomacy fail".

"The framework fully commits the United States and Russia to impose measures under Chapter VII of the UN charter in the event of non-compliance."

Chapter VII permits military action if other measures do not succeed.

But Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said any calls for swift UN action against Mr Assad showed a "lack of understanding" of the chemical weapons deal reached with Syria.

Mr Lavrov said: "Yes, our American colleagues would very much like there to be a Chapter VII resolution.

"But the final declaration, the final document that we approved and which has the guiding principles for how we proceed and for our mutual obligations, makes no mention of it."

Circumstantial evidence is no evidence. If that were true, the post above would lead us to conclude that the rebels were behind the chemical attack, as much as we can conclude that Assad's forces did it.

330 mm rocket and 140 mm rocket. Made in the Soviet Union or Russia, or any other Eastern European country that uses the Cyrillic script. Could be Bulgaria, Belarus, or Ukraine. It could also be Kazakhstan.

There is no proof that Assad used chemical weapons. Sarin gas does not linger in the container. Even if those rockets were fired by Assad's troops, nothing can be proven.
