This would give India a large edge if true especially if utilized wisely. The Iranians used a clever tactic with their F-14s armed with Phenix missiles supported by low flying F-5s.

India can do something similar. India can have formations of SU-30MKIs flying at high altitude armed with R-37Ms, while Mirages would be flying at lower altitude staying undetected. This this would give Pakistan few options, they can either go and try to engage the SU-30s and be caught off guard by the R-37Ms range or the Pakistanis can fly low thinking they can surprise the SU-30s only to be ambushed by low flying Mirages armed with Micas and R-77s.
Iran made plenty of claims but they never could prove them. During the overthrow of the Shah the US technicians sabotaged most of the AIM-54s on their way out which makes their claims all the more skeptical. The USN used the missile twice in combat and both launches failed to hit their targets which was the catalyst for removing it from service.

The Russian version suffers the same problems as the AIM-54, it can't pull high G loads. This makes it fairly easy to escape if you see it coming. Meteor is the answer to this problem with both the range and manoeuvrability to kill anything.

As per reports coming in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will be producing its Company-owned Su-30MKI aircraft to be used as Test-Bed for locally developed technologies and also for indigenous upgradation of the vast fleet of the Su-30MKI in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Harsh Vardhan Thakur, Test Pilot with HAL was first to confirm this development but this is not the first time HAL has owned a jet that was produced by it. HAL owns Hawk Mk132 trainer also known as Hawk-i which is been used to test locally designed and developed mission computer and data transfer units along with indigenous Real-Time Operating System (RTOS).

Integration of new sub-systems or modifications, obsolescence management of avionics systems on Hawk-i with locally developed system replacing imported ones will be offered to IAF to upgrade its fleet of Hawk Mk132 trainers in near future and HAL owned Su-30MKI will also be used to test weapons and new locally developed sub-systems for Super-30 upgrade program for the entire Su-30 fleet.

HAL in the past also owned Mig-21 which now has been retired.

That is a prudent, far-sighted decision indeed. :india:

The second launch of the missile was carried out by Indian Air force (IAF) from SU-30MKI platform against a sea target. The test conducted in user configuration, revalidated the ship attack capability of the advanced air-launched cruise missile.

India's Su-30 Jets Are Now Armed With Nuclear BrahMos Cruise Missiles
The Brahmos-armed Su-30s is only one of the ways that India is strengthening its strategic deterrent.

India’s nuclear command has begun receiving fighter jets armed with the country’s most advanced, supersonic cruise missile.

According to media reports, India’s Strategic Forces Command (SFC) has begun receiving 42 Su-30MKI air dominance fighters modified to carry air-launched BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This will significantly enhance the striking power of the air leg of India’s nuclear triad.

“Individually, the Su-30 and BrahMos are powerful weapons,” Russia and India Report noted. “But when the world’s most capable fourth generation fighter is armed with a uniquely destructive cruise missile, together they are a dramatic force multiplier.”

The Sukhoi Su-30 MKI is a twin-seater, highly maneuverable, fourth-generation multirole combat fighter aircraft built by Russia’s Sukhoi Design Bureau and licensed to India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. The plane will serve as the backbone of India’s Air Force through 2020 and beyond. Delhi has already acquired around 200 jets, and eventually plans to acquire 282 of them.

The Brahmos is jointly developed by India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroeyenia. Capable of traveling at speeds of Mach 3.0, the Brahmos is the fastest cruise missile in the world. As Russia and India Report explained, “The BrahMos’ 3000 km per second speed – literally faster than a bullet – means it hits the target with a huge amount of kinetic energy. In tests, the BrahMos has often cut warships in half and reduced ground targets to smithereens.”

The same report notes that the Su-30 will add to the Brahmos’ already deadly effect. “The Sukhoi’s blistering speed will add extra launch momentum to the missile, plus the aircraft’s ability to penetrate hardened air defences means there is a greater chance for the pilot to deliver the missile on to its designated targets.”

Pairing the Su-30 with the Brahmos missile will also drastically expand the striking power of the air leg of India’s nuclear triad. The Su-30 itself has a range of up to 1,800 kilometers while the Brahmos missile can strike targets nearly 300 kilometers away. Thus, the newly modified Su-30s will allow India’s nuclear aircraft to strike deep in the heart of China or Pakistan, Delhi’s two main adversaries.

The plan to modify the Su-30 to carry the Brahmos missiles was first hatched back in 2010 when the SFC submitted a proposal for two squadrons of Su-30s to be put under its command. Later, in 2012, India’s cabinet approved the project to modify 42 Su-30s to carry 216 Brahmos missiles. According to the Times of India, the integration project was mostly carried out by BrahMos Aerospace, with HAL also contributing crucial modifications.

The first of the new planes was handed over to the SFC in February and is believed to have undergone tests last month. Production on the second of the modified Su-30s has already begun. It is unclear when the SFC expects to receive the rest of the planes.

The Brahmos-armed Su-30s is only one of the ways that India is strengthening its strategic deterrent. It has also been busy testing the Agni-V, which is three-stage solid-fueled intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) with a range of about 5,000 km. When the Agni-V is inducted into service, India will have the ability to strike any part of China with nuclear weapons for the first time. Furthermore, India is currently testing ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), which will complete the nuclear triad.

This should have been done way before . Finally some grown up decisions.

Drdo / gtre must own one two as an engine test bed. Also an old super hornet should be leased from USA to test indegenious 110kn engine which will be similar in dimension to f414.

Now, Frankly speaking, I am not well hopeful of MKI. This is getting obsolete very fast. It is huge and powerful but technology wise getting outdated very fast. Its RADAR is old so as EW. It has a huge RCS, It has a big size. All these are odd for contemporary aircraft. . Reducing RCS to 1 or 2 Sq meter, putting a very powerful radar. replacing EW with latest one will delay its insolence. We must stop buying this one immediately. We need more and more Tejas MK2/MWF.

RCS can't be minimised much. Although active cancellation could help. It's radar and ew will be upgraded for sure and will be amongst the most powerful in world.

It's role will change once rafale and amca are online. Su30mki will be used with standoff weapons to hit target so that it remains out of enemy bvr / Sam range. It has huge range and payload capacity. All new weapons point to that capacity ngraam / bramhos / bramhos NG / saaw / glided bombs etc.

Some su30 can be converted to growler like ew platform to add whole strike package. They will also act as mini AWACS for different strike fighters .

Strikes in dense battle will be led by amca / rafale and mwf while su30 will support as mini AWACS , occasional refueler , ew jammer platform as well as standoff weapons delivery .

It’s getting obsolete compared to what? It’s has a far technological edge over the JF-17, f-16 block 15, F-7, mirage5, Mirage III, J-10, SU-30MKK, SU-27. Good luck getting the Tejas to get anywhere near the range and payload of the SU-30, or trying to integrate strategic weapons such as the the Brhamos. Simply put its range and payload can’t be matched which gives to unprecedented strike capable that instills fear in the enemy.

During the February skirmish it was essentially a single SU-30 holding off 8 F-16 block 52s with AWACS. This is interesting in two ways; one it showed Pakistani F-16s and it’s pilots are not on the same technical or skill level as SU-30MKIs, and two, the SU-30s range kept Pakistani F-16s in check by allowing the SU-30, even after it expended some of its fuel to stay airborne long enough to deter Pakistani F-16s. Once India started launching additional aircraft the Pakistanis bugged out because they started losing numerical superiority, they never bothered launching a second wave of fighters or refueling the ones they already had. They knew they would be outclassed and lose, and as so would only challenge the Indian aircraft if they penetrated Pakistani airspace. The Pakistani command knew they only had the advantage initially only when they had numerical superiority and surprise after that was gone, they were wise enough to stay in their hangers hoping the IAF never retaliated. Despite the propaganda they might try to sell the public.

As for RCS, it’s highly overrated. Unless an aircraft has a RCS of say, 0.01m2 or less it won’t make much of a difference. Those figures are also only frontal, since there is no way dramatically reducing RCS when you have 90 degree angles in the fuselage and vertical stabilizers. The most successful and battles proven aircraft have large RCSs such as F-15, F-14, Mig-25, SU-27, Mirage III.

Didn't you hear about what Thai Jas-39 Gripens did to Chinese J-11s in recent exercise?... 4-0 whitewash!
Hard to say how much damage Paki F-16's AIM9s would have done to our Su-30s had they shot from proper range.

Su-27/30 was built with WVR with other high RCS aircrafts in mind...presently its best use is with some loe RCS fighters as screens to engage in BVR until it gets into WVR range.
Also almost every Chinese J-XX flanker has a 135-145kN version of the Al-31 against Su-30MKI's same old 123kN. India has a bad habit of not updating the later batches. The ones being inducted 2020 are exactly the same as the ones that came in in 2000!!..

This is pretty much irrelevant and expected. The J-11 is just an old SU-27, it’s no match for an SU-30mki which has completely different avionics, better trained pilots and probably better tactics. Moreover average Chinese pilots are probably not very good as a whole. It’s also unclear what the sceneries were, how skillful were the Thai pilots, were AWCS used? What kind? Were both sides being controlled by the same AWACS or none or different types? Did the J-11 have any jammers? Did the aircraft actually carry ordinance such as missiles and fuel tanks that would cause RCS to spike? There are many unknown variables.

Let’s be realistic, the most dominant air fighters/interceptors all have a favorable kill records against smaller opponents with drastically smaller RCS and once those low RCS aircraft actually go to combat, say goodbye to those smaller RCS once fuel tanks and missiles are added. Larger aircraft can always afford a bigger more capable radar and other avionics.

As an example, Iranian F-5s performance was poor in the Iran Iraq war despite its incredible small RCS while the F-14 had an amazing record with just a handful of losses. Same Air Force, same pilots, flying US built fighters but the aircraft with the smaller RCS was shot down in scores.

You are correct, the RCS will always be great enough that Su-30 will never sneak into an engagement. It will always be the first one detected. This is the same story for the F-15. The way to cope with that is to use the same brute force tactics the Americans use. This is the same air dominance role that MKI has today,

You are talking about making MKI into a hybrid Strike Eagle/Growler... Super 30 isn't going to be this kind of upgrade. It is going to be a Su-35 without the RCS reduction. It will be possible to multi-role, but its bread and butter is still air dominance by brute force.

I talked about only some su30 turned into growler. Not all .

From su30 upgrade I'm looking forward to some active cancellation , powerfull aesa , longer range standoff weaponary.

More importantly future battlefield will be dominated by system of systems type concepts. As conceptualised by fcas etc.

Su30 and other fourth gen plane will find their role in the matrix a bit behind the low RCS strikers. Su 30 already performs as mini AWACS and refueler. In networked future it will be a multipurpose force multiplier.

I'm not sure if you can call it an Awac.
N011M bars in Mki has a peak power of 4 kw, which isnt exactly powerful.
For eg Irbis search Pk power is 18.6 kw.
Su30 in iaf excercise has played the role of communicator and cuer . The second pilot immensely. Bars still have highest range among all the other fighters in iaf. And after upgrade an aesa might make it even more capable. So in absence of proper AWACS at a theatre it is su30 with twin pilot which will lead the communication / coordination .
