Additional Sukhoi squadron likely for Chabua base: IAF
CHABUA: An additional squadron of advanced combat aircraft Sukhoi-30MKI is likely to be stationed at the Indian Air Force's eastern-most station in view of the strategic importance of the base.

Sharing the news here, Wing Commander Gaurav Mani Tripathy told journalists yesterday on the eve of the 81st Air Force Day that the Sukhoi-30MKI multi-role fighter plane squadron is used to patrol the skies in the region.

With the Mig-21 era coming to an end at the station -- the last squadron moved out in 2009 -- Tripathy said that the base underwent a major renovation and expansion of facilities in preparation for the induction of the Sukhoi-30MKI fighters, which arrived in February 2011.

Speaking about the Su-30MKI, Tripathy said the aircraft was manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) under licence from Russia's Sukhoi.

He said that the heavy, all-weather, long-range Indian variant of the fighter plane was more advanced than the basic SU-30MK and more capable than those used by China (SU30MKK/MK2) and Malaysia (SU-30MKM).

Talking about the Chabua base, he said, "The station has served as a major supply point for troops deployed in Arunachal Pradesh with various transport aircraft and helicopters operating from here."

The Chabua base was built in 1939 and used throughout World War II by Allied Forces against invading Japanese forces.

As an IAF base, Chabua took on a training role as MiG-21s were based here for the instruction of young fighter pilots, Tripathy said.

On the occasion of the 81st anniversary of the IAF, the station is set to achieve all tasks in peace or in war, in line with the IAF's credo of 'People First, Mission Always', the Wing Commander added.

"Over the years, the transport and helicopter fleets have emerged as the lifelines for both our troops at forward posts, as well as the civilian population in remote areas and in times of natural disasters," he added.

Sorry Wrong Thread,

But Today i saw two Su-30 Mki (escorting or refueling) with C-17 over ISBT delhi.

Both Mki were behind C-17 in such a formation thats it looks like they are doing Refueling exercise.

Can anybody confirm?

The Indian Air Force (IAF) will not let its fighter squadron strength drop below the existing 34 till 2017 as the Soviet-era workhorse, Mig-21s, are being gradually replaced with Sukhoi-30 MKIs.
The plan is to ensure that current operational strength is maintained as the number of squadrons is expected to increase only after 2017 with the anticipated arrival of new aircraft such as French Rafale and the home-made Light Combat Aircraft.
Sources said the ageing MiGs are being replaced with much more capable Sukhois, which will negate the phase-out impact.

Not only will the numerical strength be maintained, the capabilities will also go up significantly as the Sukhois are far more superior to the old war horse.
The IAF's desired combat fleet strength is 42 squadron, a target that can be achieved only after 2027. By 2017, the number of Sukhoi squadron is expected to reach 14.
The last Sukhoi squadron to come up by 2017 will be at the newly inaugurated base at Thanjavour in Tamil Nadu.
The replacement plan hinges on two major projects. While price negotiations for the purchase of 126 French Rafale multi-role aircraft is still under way, the contract is expected to be ready soon so that the delivery can start at least by 2017.
The development of Light Combat Aircraft has also reached critical stage with initial operational clearance expected by the end of this year.
The flight trials are under way and going by the indications, and the aircraft should get initial operational clearance within the stipulated timeframe.

mig 21 is an interceptor, right ? can sukhoi play that role since it is an air superiority fighter ?

Rate of climb, max speed, range etc., are all greater than mig 21. I think it can play the role of interceptor quite easily. @Decklander Sir, what do you think?

A good interceptor shud have outstanding scramble time, SU-30MKI does not have that but each SU-30 is as good as three MIG-21s.
Tilldate GNAT was the best interceptor in terms of scamble time. It cud get airborne and engage within 45 secs. It had compressed air starter and had only guns for shooting down the enemy ac. The next best was F-20 which had a cartridge starter and its avionics in those days cud stabilise within 20 secs allowing to reach 40k ft within 2 mins of scramble being announced.
US National guard has F-16s for this role for homeland defence and they too are light weight fighters but now become mid weight. Using Su-30 for interception role is like giving the job of infantry to artillery.

what about using upgraded mig 29 and lca as interceptors, while using super su30 mki and rafales as frontline fighters?

That's the idea.

Anyway, according to IAF, the scramble time for Mig-21 Bison is 30 secs.

Probably you are mistaking it for take off time from wheels roll. Mig-21 engine takes about 35 secs for start up only. but its nose intake means that the engine can continue to start while its the pilot straps up and and ground personel can be on ladders around it.

you mean overall speed for interception of enemy aircrafts.....what about the case of sukhoi 30mki ?

scramble time is calculated as the time taken from scramble order to establishing CAP station at generally 40k feet. I am not aware of the scramble time of Su-30s.

Lauding commercial airlines like Jet Airways for condition monitoring of its passenger aircraft fleet and ensuring over 99 percent maintenance in its daily operations, Tamilmani said in contrast about 40 percent of Russian-made Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets in the Indian Air Force combat fleet remain grounded for want of condition monitoring and serviceability.

"About 40 percent (116 aircraft) of the 290 Sukhois are on ground due to maintenance and service issues. If the operational fitness of the Sukhoi fleet is increased to 70-80 percent from 60 percent, the air force will be able to save a lot and ensure the fighter jets are not on ground longer than required," Tamilmani said, stressing on the importance of condition monitoring.


With each Sukhoi costing Rs.400 crore, grounding 116 of the total fleet will mean fighters valued at Rs.46,400 crore are on ground instead of being in flying condition all the time.

"I hope DRDO and its research centres such as Aeronautical Development Agency and Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), which are involved in the design and development of Tejas, the light combat aircraft (LCA) over the last two decades, will develop sensor technology to ensure their condition monitoring after the fighters are inducted into the IAF fleet," Tamilmani noted.

Hmm, I suppose so. Now that you mention it, I don't remember which of the two he referred to.

Great, that means around 170 Su-30Mki are operational :D (the actual number delivered). Stupid report is stupid.
How this could be possible when total number of Su-30MKI to be inducted is just 272, if we take Wiki as reference then 190+ are delivered and not 290.

The speaker was uninformed, that's all. Which means he made up the numbers without knowing official data.

Hi, are there any photos of the MKI with Kh-59ME, the variant Kh-59 with the turbojet engine. The MKI is equipped with the Kh-59 or the Kh-59ME?

Also what is the missile on the inner-most pylon of this MKI, next to the R-27?

Does anyone know the actual air-to-ground munitions integrated to the MKI?
I know of the Griffin 1000lb LGB, KAB-500Kr TV guided bomb, Kh-29TE TV guided air-to-surface missile, Kh-31A/P anti-ship missile/anti-radiation missile and Kh-59 (solid fuel rocket variant not the Kh-59M/ME variants powered by a turbojet engine).

Anyone has any photos of the MKI with KAB-500L, KAB-1500L, Paveway, KAB-1500Kr , Kh-29L and Kh-59ME/MA?
