SOUTH KOREA - 20 APRIL 2011
Military and intelligence authorities have plans to enhance their monitoring of the North Korean military from the sky.
Authorities have indicated that they will deploy two more unmanned surveillance planes to the region near the Yellow Sea border.
A Defense Ministry official said that there is an unmanned reconnaissance plane that flies surveillance missions from an intelligence ship in that region, but it is impossible to operate it during poor weather conditions. The military intends to purchase two up-to-date, remote-controlled surveillance planes that can get the job done.
The military's model of choice is the CamCopter S-100 from Schiebel Corporation of Austria.
The unmanned aerial vehicle is three-meters long and has a maximum speed of 240 kilometers per hour. It is capable of vertical takeoff and landing, and flying at an altitude of more than six kilometers for six hours.
