Even for a short period for like 25 years or so. So that meanwhile we can focus about our economy and our social issues on a fast track basis and nuclear umbrella and combined firepower of NATO will ensure we remain safe. In the meantime we can also develop a robust defence manufacturing base here in India.

Please post only logical and elaborate points either in favour or against this scenario and maintain civility DFIans.

Joining NATO for India will mean becoming completely alienated from Russia. During the height of cold war, India officially was un-allied, so now also it is not that much required. This is my opinion, not an expert.

We are alienating from russia anyways, its more inclined towards china and will continue to do so in future. Presently we dont have any strong ally.

We are not in the North Atlantic Region. So India can't join the NATO.

Additionally, if I am not mistaken NATO aspirant countries must not have any major border disputes at the time of joining.
But japan, south korea, turkey etc are not in Atlantic ocean region. Same goes with Australia.

We should not join NATO . It is not our war as no country will ever fight our war. Europeans are not ready to sacrifice. They are not willing to die for their country. Our men will be fodder for the next war like they were during WWI and WWII. SO NOPE NOPE NOPE.

None of these are NATO except Turkey.
And it could be argued that turkey is in or adjacent to the North Atlantic region.
Anyways we have to stand on our own two feet.
Yaa sorry for the confusion but they are atleast MNNAs, why cant we lobby for the same. We are being too ambitious on being non aligned while world order is changing dramatically.

There was something called SEATO (which included Asian and the Australians and the US and UK) but i think that ended up as failure .. May be we can revive it with all the old partners and extra adding us ..This was created to stop the Russian and communist axis in those cold war days ..

There is 100 times more probability for war to take place in Asia rather than in Europe.

Successive Indian governments have valued diplomatic freedom and if we join NATO we lose that completely.
If we join NATO our foreign policy will not be dictated from the Rashtrapati Bhavan but from Brussels.
NATO was built for one purpose: to deter the USSR and now Russia. Countries joining the alliance submitted to the clauses because each country faced an existential threat either directly from the USSR or from its communist ideology.
The collapse of the USSR has pretty much made NATO redundant since the the driving force keeping members together is now gone. Just look at the trouble Turkey is facing trying to deepen relations with Russia and China with NATO holding it back.

The alliance system that Bismarck pioneered no longer works today. The global economy is too interconnected and multilateral-ism is the way forward. Take advantage of both sides for weapons and investments.

Besides this a few other points which may have been mentioned:
1. India is not in the Atlantic.
2. We do not face any threat from Russia.
3. We are already joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) which is seen as a rival to NATO.
4. Joining NATO, SEATO or CENTO will cut us off from Chinese Chinese and AIIB investments which can be to the tune of 75 billion $.

Ok so my point is these days our diplomacy cant help us making chinese to take pro India stance for our benefits because lets face it, its the economy which can far outweigh any kind of superior diplomatic manoeuvres. For a better economy we need a safe environment far from daily pakistani randirona. When we will be allied to western nations we may lose some edge over short term in our diplomacy and non alignment rhetoric but will gain trustworthy allies (provided we comply to their terms too which may be plausible without us being seen as desperate) meanwhile we improve our manufacturing and technological base from the ties with those countries. Strong defence pact signed will make China deterred always. Plus sooner or later muslim nations will go bonkers and will leave western sphere to enter in Chinese-russian sphere which we (west & Indians) want to see as a failure. So in future too if say some radical muslim nation supports pakistan in a war against India, we would need strong allies to count upon too.

Nato is a grouping about to do suicide, no need to join it. May be we can take over there burden to supply them as R&D hub en production to them en there allies. Big nooo to join Nato or Warsaw, both are bull compared to our NAM. Slow en study wins the race.

No. The costs (comprimise of autonomy) does not justify the marginal benefits.

And make no mistake, once India is in NATO, it isn't leaving. You may go in with a view that you'll depart in 25 years but that will never happen.

We don't need to join NATO. We can achieve more than NATO members with bilateral arrangements with USA and Russia separately.

We are already in an informal alliance with USA that's more than enough. We get weapons tech , support in international institutions NSG , mtcr etc. And no liabilities . We got it thousands time better then any NATO member could dream of.

the emerging future alliance of russia , pakistan , iran and china would left no other choice for india...

and ambition of soudhi arabia to spread the wahabi idiology and pushing for a islamic militery force , the clash is imminent ....

The best deal we will get from them is CENTO or SEATO. I don;t think we are even eligible for NATO. NATO is strictly for the north atlantic countries..
