DRDO's UAV Rustom-2 won’t have combat capabilities

Scientists at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) stare at a long penance before they can knock on the doors of any of the armed services to offer unmanned air vehicle Rustom-2, which has been rebranded Tapas (meaning penance in Hindi). Worse, it won't even have combat capabilities.

The Tactical Air-Borne Platform for Surveillance-Beyond Horizon 201 (Tapas-BH 201) as Rustom-2 is called has just managed to complete the maiden flight, which will be followed by developments of nine more prototypes for testing after which the certification process will start.

"We have to make 10 aircraft for test-flying before going into certification. We will require a one year of continuous effort before we can go knocking on the doors of the users (armed forces)," DRDO DG S Christopher told reporters on Sunday.

DRDO also clarified that unlike all the previous branding, Rustom-2 won't have be a combat UAV and that is only being developed for surveillance. The Rs 1,500 crore project is being tested at a time the armed forces plan to increase their UAV/drone platforms, including those with combat abilities.

As India continues to buy drones from abroad, some experts believe that Rustom-2 may become redundant.

Although it good to see that we are developing the tech and attempting to create an Eco sys in this genre i personally have less hope for this project.. May be this is because of the tech gap between our product and others mature products present in the market is just to wide to be plugged soon in a few years gap.
This gap can be managed if go for joint ventures, I pray that i am prooved wrong and it comes out as a mature platform and continues with its upgraded versions.

Close on the heels of Rustom-II, India’s indigenously developed long-endurance combat-capable drone successfully completing its maiden-flight, DRDO on Sunday decided to produce 10 such unmanned aircraft for induction into the Indian armed forces in the future.

“We have decided to produce 10 pilot less or unmanned aircraft like Rustom-II, aimed at giving a boost to India’s development programme for UAV,” DRDO Director S Christopher told reporters in Bengaluru. He said, “Young DRDO engineers would work hard to make it successful. It would, at least, take one year to do it. We will also seek to get an order from Indian armed forces.”
Christopher said development of nine prototypes of the advanced Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) would be done after the successful flight of the first such drone. “The first flight will be followed by development of nine more prototypes of the advanced UAV for testing, after which the certification process will start,” he said. Christopher clarified that TAPAS-BH-201 (Tactical Advanced Platform for Aerial Surveillance-Beyond Horizon-201) will be in a non-combat role.

“Media reports are incorrect. Tapas is an UAV and not UCAV,” he said. He exuded confidence in going forward with the indigenous UAV on the lines of LCA Tajas which had proved its ability and is ready to be deployed in the armed forces, both in Air Force and Navy. On the test flight of Rustom-2, rechristened as Tapas 201, Christopher said the UAV had met the initial expectations and the Rs 1,500 crore programme was on line.

It's a bummer that they canceled the higher output VRDE's aero engine project!!! The current engines can barely carry its sensor load. Would be great if they got higher powered engines, so it can carry a couple of Helinas!!!

VRDE and Mahindra were working on a high power (200 hp) aero-diesel engine for Rustom II - a project that was recently revealed as having been cancelled (due to change in user requirements!!!??). Anyone know the lowdown on this?? Will Rustom II chug along with underpowered engine (incapable of carrying any armaments)??

The sad part after lot of waiting is that it will have limited combat abilities where as the official name "The Tactical Air-Borne Platform for Surveillance-Beyond Horizon 201 (Tapas-BH 201)" means that its a "Surveillance" platform and not "combat". what was initially expected was a combat platform.... means we still be dependent on foreign platforms for combat drones....
