NATO, Ukraine, Israel Continue To Arm Georgia For New Conflicts

The supply of the Georgian army with weapons and military equipment from Ukraine continues uninterrupted, says Lieutenant General Alexander Shlyakhturov, Head of Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate.

“According to our data, Georgia continues to receive military assistance from the NATO countries, Israel and Ukraine like it was before the events of August, 2008. The NATO states, especially the new Eastern-European members, are supplying Georgia mostly with firearms and equipment. The US is training Georgian personnel in accordance with NATO tactics. Israel supplies Georgia with unmanned aircraft and Ukraine delivers heavy weaponry, including tanks and air defense systems,” Shlyakhturov told ITAR-TASS news agency.

“In order to cover them, Ukraine's arms supplies to Georgia are carried out outside official state channels, but not without the knowledge and higher patronage of the Ukrainian leadership,” he stressed.

Back in July, the CEO of Ukrainian state-owned Ukrspetsexport company, Sergey Bondarchuk, said Ukraine has delivered weapons to Georgia and will continue doing so until the UN Security Council issues any prohibition decision on those actions.

He confirmed the fact of supplies of air defense systems, helicopters, infantry fighting vehicles and firearms, saying that “Everything was absolutely legal, on the basis of documents agreed to and received from the security services”.

And the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament’s investigative commission “On issues of clarifying and establishing the facts of supplies to Georgia Ukrainian military equipment in violation of Ukrainian legislation and international law”, Valery Konovalyuk, said that Georgia had received Ukrainian weapons used in the attack on South Ossetia with the knowledge and on behalf of Ukraine’s president, Viktor Yushchenko.

Russian WWII tanks to march on Moscow's Red Square | Top Russian news and analysis online | 'RIA Novosti' newswire

MOSCOW, November 7 (RIA Novosti) - Two famed WWII T-34 tanks will take part in a festive march on Moscow's Red Square on Saturday to commemorate the legendary military parade of 1941 and in honor of the country's World War II effort.

The T-34 Soviet medium tank, produced from 1940 to 1958, was the mainstay of the Red Army armored forces throughout World War II. It has been often credited as the most effective, efficient and influential tank design of the war.

The November 7, 1941 parade, which commemorated the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution, was held for the first time after Russia entered the war and aimed to raise morale as Nazi German forces closed in on Moscow. After troops marched pass leader Josef Stalin they headed straight for the frontlines just outside the Russian capital.

The festive march on Saturday will involve units from the Moscow military district, wearing WWII Soviet military dress and other historical military costumes, and about 4,000 members of various youth groups.

At least 45 participants of the 1941 parade are expected to attend the Saturday parade as guests of honor.

Meanwhile, Russia's communists plan separate marches and rallies in central Moscow and around the country on Saturday to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution, which is more commonly referred to in Russia as the Great October Socialist Revolution.

Although November 7 has not been celebrated as a national holiday since former president Vladimir Putin abolished it several years ago, opinion surveys say many Russians still mark the date as the anniversary of the revolution.

Russian HMS for attack helicopters

Russian HMS for attack helicopters

As it's well known abroad, the first world HMS was developed in USSR - 'Shchel' (Kiev, Arsenal). A long time after USSR dismissal Russian AF and military aircrafts manufacturers used 'Sura' HMS variants of the same Ukrainian vendor without trying to develop Russian own capability in this issue. However, the political problems in Ukraine, economic instability there and the Western efforts to break territorial and ethnic integrity of this Orthodox state, which transitionally had good relation with Moscow, pushed Russia to development of its own HMS, for not to be dependent from Kiev. This helmet was developed by GRPZ (BARS radar serial manufacturer from Ryazan), and used on new Russian attack helos - Ka-50/52 and Mi-28N:

Russian nuclear sub starts sea trials after overhaul

ST. PETERSBURG, November 12 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Delta-IV class Karelia nuclear submarine has started sea trials following lengthy modernization at the Zvezdochka shipyard in northern Russia, the company said.

The overhaul, which started in 2004, included noise reduction, improved enemy ship and submarine tracking capabilities, and enhanced survivability. The submarine has been equipped with 16 Sineva RSM-54 missiles.

K-18 Karelia could join Russia's Northern Fleet by the end of this year, the shipyard said in a statement on Wednesday.

Similar overhaul has been done to four other Delta-IV class submarines - the K-51 Verkhoturye, the K-84 Yekaterinburg, the K-114 Tula, and the K-117 Bryansk.

The Russian Navy has seven Delta-IV class submarines in service. They are all deployed in the Northern Fleet.

"The Delta-IV class submarines are the core of the naval component of the Russian nuclear triad at present. After the modernization, the subs will be able to remain in service for another 10 years," Zvezdochka said.

Engine failure could be responsible for Tu-142 crash

MOSCOW, November 11 (RIA Novosti) - Engine failure could have caused Friday's crash of a Russian military Tu-142 plane in the Tatar Strait, the chief of the Russian General Staff said on Wednesday.

"The commission will complete the probe and find out," Gen. Nikolai Makarov said.

The exact cause of the crash could be established only after black boxes from the plane are found.

Eleven people were on board the Pacific Fleet plane that went down during a combat training flight on Friday some 20 kilometers (12 miles) off the Tatar Strait, which separates mainland Russia from the Far East island of Sakhalin.

The remains of the plane were located on Saturday morning by several ships and planes at a depth of about 44 meters (144 feet). Fragments of human bodies have also been discovered. They will undergo a forensic medical examination.

Russia plans reactivation of two Kirov-class cruisers

The Russian Federation Navy (RFN) is to reactivate two laid-up Kirov-class (Project 1144) battle cruisers, according to statements attributed by Russian media to the country's deputy defence minister.

Colonel General Vladimir Popovkin reportedly said that the Ministry of Defence has decided to renovate and modernise its heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser (tiazhyeliy atomniy raketniy kreiser/TARK) units Admiral Lazarev (ex- Frunze ) and Admiral Nakhimov (ex- Kalinin ).

The 24,300-ton ships were commissioned into the Soviet Navy in 1984 and 1988, the second and third vessels in a class that eventually numbered four. Col Gen Popovkin made no mention of the lead ship, Admiral Ushakov (ex- Kirov ), which entered service in 1980 and was decommissioned in 2004, appearing to confirm earlier reports that it is to be scrapped.

The RFN currently has one ship of the class in service, Pyotr Velikiy (ex- Yuri Andropov , ex- Kuibishev ), which was launched in St Petersburg in 1989 and commissioned in 1998.

Russia continues to modernize its nuclear triad

MOSCOW, November 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Strategic Missile Forces (SMF), the land-based component of the nuclear triad, will put on combat duty a second regiment equipped with Topol-M mobile missile systems by the end of 2009.

Topol-M (SS-27 Stalin) missiles are the mainstay of the ground-based component of Russia's nuclear triad. As of the beginning of 2009, the SMF operated 50 silo-based and six road-mobile Topol-M missile systems.

"We will complete the rearmament of the second missile regiment in the Teikovo division with mobile Topol-M systems," the new SMF commander, Lt. Gen. Andrei Shvaichenko told reporters in Moscow.

The first Topol-M mobile missile regiment has already been put on combat duty with the 54th Strategic Missile Division near the town of Teikovo, about 150 miles (240 km) northeast of Moscow.

Shvaichenko also said that a sixth regiment of silo-based Topol-M systems will be put in service with the Tatishchevo Missile Division near Saratov in southwestern Russia in 2010.

The Topol-M missile, with a range of about 7,000 miles (11,000 km), is said to be immune to any current and future U.S. ABM defense. It is capable of making evasive maneuvers to avoid a kill using terminal phase interceptors, and carries targeting countermeasures and decoys.

It is also shielded against radiation, electromagnetic pulse, nuclear blasts, and is designed to survive a hit from any form of laser technology.

At present, six types of silo-based and mobile ICBM systems are on combat duty with the SMF, including the heavy Voyevoda (SS-18 Satan) capable of carrying 10 warheads, and the Topol-M systems.

Shvaichenko said Russia will continue work to extend the service life of the SS-18 missiles to 31 years and the SS-25 Topol and RS-20B missiles to 23 years.

Russian defence funding at 'unprecedented' level: Putin

MOSCOW — Russia has provided an "unprecedented" 970 billion roubles (22.6 billion euros, 33.8 billion dollars) to its defence industry this year, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Wednesday.State support for the sector had helped it grow by 3.8 percent since the start of the year despite the economic downturn, Putin said in comments reported by Russian news agencies.

"During the recession we have allocated enough money to the military-industrial sector, which is a priority for government support. In 2009 funding reached an unprecedented level for our country: almost 970 billion roubles," Putin said.State aid had taken the form of reduced-rate loans and guarantees as well as direct subsidies, he said.

While Russian industry generally had declined during the global financial crisis, he said, the defence sector had remained buoyant.Speaking on a visit to the town of Kolomna, around 100 kilometres (60 miles) south east of Moscow and home to one of Russia's main missile production sites, Putin warned it was vital the sector modernised.

"Under our plan, the proportion of modern weapons and technology used by the army must radically increase between now and 2020," he said."We need modern, forward-looking equipment," he saidOn November 12 Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said the armed forces would get new missiles and nuclear submarines from 2010.
