The development of a promising heavy transport aircraft "Elephant" continues

According to the business aviation portal ATO.ru, scientists from the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) are working on improving the aerodynamic layout of the new heavy Russian transport aircraft Slon. The project is aimed at researching the technologies of a promising transport aircraft to replace the heavy long-range freighter An-124 Ruslan. This aircraft will be designed to transport heavy and bulky cargo over a distance of about 7,000 km at a speed of 850 km/h. The required runway length is 3 km. The maximum payload is 180 tons (for comparison, the An-124 has 120 tons). The "Elephant" is being designed for the Russian promising double-circuit turbojet engines PD-35.

The work is carried out under a state contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation within the framework of the research project "Technology-Transport - 2".

Previously, this project went through two cycles of research aimed at studying the aerodynamics of an aircraft at different flight speeds, with visualization of the flow around the model to identify areas of possible optimization.

Based on the test results, the scientists of the institute modified the layout of the "Elephant". The new elements in it were the fuselage of an increased section for the purpose of transporting bulky cargo, a reduced fairing of the junction of the wing with the fuselage, pylons with improved profiles with engine nacelles corresponding to the PD-35 engine, and several options for wingtips.

Until the end of this year, the aircraft model with new elements is being studied in the T-106 variable density wind tunnel. Scientists will study its main characteristics in cruising modes, as well as confirm the calculated effectiveness of modifications.

"The Elephant aircraft is optimized primarily for civilian use. Thanks to the enlarged fuselage, we will be able to offer customers the transportation of large volumes of cargo to the estimated flight range, and the wing with modified wingtips will provide high aerodynamic quality," said a researcher at the TsAGI Center for Integrated Technology Integration. Alexander Krutov.

On the part of bmpd, we recall that the concept of a promising heavy transport aircraft (TTS) "Elephant" to replace the An-124 "Ruslan" aircraft was first presented to TsAGI at the Moscow Aviation and Space Salon MAKS-2017.

Presumably, the plane was hit by friendly fire from a Russian air defense system.

This is the second case in a week. The previous one was a Su-34M near Alchevsk, the pilots also successfully ejected

Rostec will start testing a new communication system for the Su-57 fighter this fall

The modernization of the complex is carried out by the research and production enterprise "Polyot" of the holding "Ruselectronics"
MOSCOW, 21 July. /TASS/. The upgraded communication system for the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter will be tested as part of the aircraft this fall. This was reported to TASS in the press service of the Roselectronics holding of the state corporation Rostec.

"Prototypes of the modernized communications complex are under production, and they are scheduled to be tested in mid-autumn, including as part of the Su-57 aircraft," the holding company said.

Modernization of the communication complex for the fifth generation fighter is currently being carried out by the Polet research and production enterprise of the Ruselectronics holding (part of Rostec).

The Su-57 is a fifth-generation Russian multifunctional fighter designed to destroy all types of air, ground and surface targets. It has supersonic cruising speed, internal armament, radar-absorbing coating, as well as the latest set of onboard equipment. By the end of 2024, the Russian Aerospace Forces will receive 22 Su-57s, and by 2028 their number will be increased to 76 units. The first fighter entered the troops in 2020.

sAGI scientists explore the concept of creating aircraft of various payloads
photo TsAGI

April 14, 2022, AEX.RU - Scientists of the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute named after Professor N.E. Zhukovsky (part of the National Research Center "Institute named after N.E. Zhukovsky") conducted a series of tests of aircraft models of various payloads. The experiments were carried out as part of the research work “Development of concepts for the creation of mainline and regional aircraft of the next generation” under a state contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, the TsAGI press service reports.

The purpose of the study is to develop a concept for creating a family of aircraft of various carrying capacities at minimal cost. “When we design an aircraft with an increased payload or flight range based on another, it always means an increase in takeoff weight. The logical step in this case is to design a wing with a larger area compared to the prototype. At the same time, it is advisable to make maximum use of existing structural elements. In this work, we are studying ways to create a new wing layout with minimal time and resources,” said Ivan Chernyshev, head of the aircraft aerodynamics department at TsAGI.

Specialists of the Russian Center for Aviation Science have proposed a technology for designing wings of various sizes for a line of promising transport aircraft. The objects of study were two layouts. The first is a heavy commercial (transport) aircraft with two engines and a payload of 70-80 tons. The second is a super-heavy version with four engines, the payload of which is twice as high. To simplify and reduce the cost of creating a large aircraft, the outer wing console was taken from the wing of the "younger" member of the family, and the area was increased due to the center-section insert with additional engines. Previously, TsAGI scientists performed aerodynamic design of the wings separately for each layout. Further, the specialists designed a composite wing of a four-engine aircraft based on a twin-engine one.

“The main question is what will be the loss in aerodynamic performance with this approach compared to designing a wing from scratch. The answer to it was the purpose of the study,” Ivan Chernyshev explained.

The scientists conducted a series of tests of thematic models. The experiments were carried out in the TsAGI T-106 wind tunnel. According to their results, scientists came to the conclusion that the composite wing in terms of aerodynamic quality is only 1.5% inferior to the version designed from scratch. This confirms the effectiveness of the developed concept. The tests also confirmed the speed characteristics.

MOSCOW, July 27 - RIA Novosti. The Russian military began to use a new reconnaissance complex based on the Su-34 front-line bomber as part of a special operation in Ukraine, an informed source told RIA Novosti.

"As part of a special operation, the Russian Aerospace Forces have begun using new reconnaissance systems based on Su-34 front-line bombers, which make it possible to determine with high accuracy the coordinates and other parameters of enemy targets, in particular, air defense positions and Ukrainian radar stations," the source said.

He specified that such capabilities of the Su-34 are provided by the latest suspended universal reconnaissance containers. Three types of containers are used on bombers - optoelectronic, radar and electronic intelligence.

As the source explained, the reconnaissance complex "allows the transfer of information about enemy military facilities to ground forces and fire weapons via automatic communication channels in a near-real time mode."

Universal reconnaissance containers were created by the Kulon Research Institute, which is part of the Roselectronics holding, as part of the Sych development work, which involves expanding the combat capabilities of the Su-34.

Footage of the combat work of Su-35S fighters as part of a military special operation in Ukraine
Today, 10:30
16

The Ministry of Defense continues to share a video on the progress of the special military operation of the Russian army in Ukraine. This time, the military showed footage of the combat work of the crews of the Su-35S ZVO fighters to destroy the military infrastructure of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

As explained in the Ministry of Defense, combat missions of Russian fighters within the framework of the NMD are carried out from temporary airfields at any time of the day and in any weather. Pilots per day can make from one to several sorties, depending on the situation and the tasks assigned. To destroy the enemy, a wide range of aviation weapons is used, including high-precision missiles, which account for a significant part of the destroyed enemy.

To destroy aircraft of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, destroy radar stations, air defense systems, crews use guided high-precision missiles of various air-to-air and air-to-surface classes

- the message says.

As has been reported more than once, the main fighters taking part in the NWO are the Su-30SM and Su-35S. It is these aircraft, together with Su-34 front-line bombers, that daily strike at the rear of the Ukrainian group, destroying warehouses, storage facilities, armored vehicles and reserves of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. There are also air battles, from which our pilots invariably come out victorious. Since the beginning of the NMD, the Russian Aerospace Forces have not lost a single aircraft in battles with Ukrainian Air Force fighters.

Today our Air Force turns 110 years old. We sincerely congratulate the Air Force (VKS) of Russia on the holiday!

The UAV is made using stealth technologies aimed at reducing radar and thermal visibility. To counter the radar, special contours of the airframe and, possibly, electronic warfare equipment are used. On the second prototype, a special flat engine nozzle appeared, which reduces the visibility for IR tools. How successful such measures and means are is not known. At the same time, there are no grounds for negative assessments typical of foreign publications.

"Hunter" receives a developed complex of electronic equipment and an autopilot with the possibility of independent work and use in a group. With its help, the UAV will be able to monitor the air situation and find ground targets, as well as transmit and receive information. One of the tasks of the S-70 will be to strike at ground targets. To do this, guided missiles or bombs will be placed inside the airframe and on the external sling. Similar drone capabilities have already been demonstrated to the general public.

Abroad, they expect the S-70 to show its strike potential not only in the conditions of the test site. It is quite possible that in the foreseeable future one of the existing devices will indeed be tested as part of the Special Operation. However, when this will happen - and whether it will happen at all - is not yet clear. However, the use of a new UAV will be reported, and this episode will receive due attention.
1660741551748.png

Predictable Interest

Advanced Russian developments, especially in areas new to our industry, always arouse increased interest both within the country and abroad. And the reaction to them is always predictable. Thus, the foreign press, including specialized publications, is critical of Russian-made samples, although it tries to maintain a semblance of objectivity.

However, the industry and the Ministry of Defense do not pay attention to foreign publications and continue to work according to the established schedule. As a result of this, the S-70 "Hunter" is approaching the launch of the series and adoption into service. These events will take place in the foreseeable future - and will again cause a stir. And you can already imagine how the foreign media will react to them.

The Russian Aerospace Forces will receive a new batch of Su-34 front-line bombers, a contract for the supply of aircraft was signed as part of the Army-2022 international forum.

The parameters of the contract have not yet been disclosed, so we cannot say how many new aircraft the military has ordered. Perhaps information about this will become known a little later. In the meantime, Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Alexei Krivoruchko and Vice President of the United Aviation Corporation Alexander Bobryshev have signed the agreement.

A state contract is signed for the supply of Su-34 aircraft

- announced the announcer of the ceremony.

Most likely, the bombers will be produced already in a modernized version, since from 2021 all aircraft entering the troops will be in the Su-34M version. In total, by 2027, within the framework of already concluded contracts, the Ministry of Defense plans to receive 76 modernized Su-34Ms of a new construction, now an as yet unnamed number of aircraft under the new contract can be added to them.

The Su-34 is a Russian multifunctional fighter-bomber capable of carrying up to eight tons of ammunition, the aircraft is actively used as part of the SVO in Ukraine.

A number of contracts have also been signed for the supply of drones to the troops. We are talking about UAVs Orlan, Pacer and Eleron. This is confirmed by the Ministry of Defense. In particular, the military should receive drones "Orlan-10", "Orlan-30", strike reconnaissance "Pacer", as well as UAV "Eleron-3".

From the territory of Belarus, strikes were carried out on the Zhytomyr airfield - the base of the Ukrainian Su-27
Yesterday, 14:53

On August 17, the Russian Aerospace Forces launched a missile attack on the Zhytomyr airfield, where heavy Su-27 fighters operating in the Kyiv region are based. This, in particular, was stated by the Ukrainian Air Command Center.

Information about the presence of fighters at this facility was received from a satellite, which recorded the movement of six blue spots on the airfield - this color is typical for Ukrainian combat aircraft.

According to representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the airfield in Zhytomyr was attacked by Russian Su-34 fighter-bombers using Kh-59 aircraft missiles. At the same time, the planes took off from Belarusian territory.

Meanwhile, Russian units destroyed a large number of reservists and military equipment that arrived for unloading at the Kalinindorf railway station in the Kherson region. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian defense department Igor Konashenkov.

Earlier, State Duma deputy from Crimea Mikhail Sheremet said that Russian troops had destroyed the combat potential of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the parliamentarian, now Russia is confronted by the forces of the collective West.

Military expert appreciated Kyiv's statement on the loss of two Su-35 squadrons by the Russian Aerospace Forces
August 14, 2022
34

Some time ago, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine disseminated information that since the beginning of the Russian special operation on Ukrainian territory, the Russian Aerospace Forces have lost 24 modern Su-35 fighters, i.e. 2 squadrons of 12 aircraft each. This information was picked up by information resources controlled by Kyiv, starting to pass them off as yet another “overcome”.

This drew the attention of the Russian military observer, retired colonel Mikhail Khodaryonok, who on August 13 assessed the mentioned statements and commented on what was happening in his Telegram channel.

To begin with, about losses as a species. They happen in battles, but it’s pointless to talk specifically about the Su-35. This is the latest machine for gaining air supremacy. Partially, these vehicles were tasked with suppressing Ukrainian air defense in the early days, so the presence of the Su-35 terribly annoys the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a phenomenon

– explained the expert.

He recalled that in 2020, Russia had only 70 Su-35 units. Consequently, the absence of a significant number of such aircraft would be very noticeable. Therefore, the assertions that the Russian Aerospace Forces lost more than 1/3 (34%) of the available Su-35s do not correspond to reality.

The Su-35 is the most problematic target (not counting the Su-57) for Ukrainian air defense. The vehicle is armed with long-range air-to-ground missiles and can use weapons outside the firing range of the Buk air defense system of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The detection range of Su-35 air targets is approaching 400 km, so for the Russian fighter in the Ukrainian airspace expanse

he added.

Khodarenok summed up that if the Russian Aerospace Forces had a shortage of Su-35s, then the Ukrainian Air Force would not lose 267 of its aircraft, since without these magnificent fighters it would be problematic to achieve such a result.

Note that if the Russian Aerospace Forces really experienced a shortage of Su-35s, then 21 such fighters had not been located for many months on the territory of the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant named after. Yu.A. Gagarin (KnAAZ) in anticipation of buyers from Iran, but would have taken part in the NWO for a long time.

Checkmate will make its first flight in 2024.

The first flight of the fifth-generation Su-75 Checkmate light fighter is scheduled for 2024, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, said in an interview with Interfax.

"During the time that has passed since the presentation of the project at MAKS-2021, feedback was received from potential customers. Work was also carried out to optimize the cost and analyze individual technical solutions, which made it possible to significantly increase competitiveness, commercial attractiveness, and also reduce technical risks when creating domestic single-engine aircraft," Manturov said.

“Based on these works, changes were made to the project, which corrected the timing of the first flight. But at the same time, the principle of modularity and modern digital technologies made it possible to make these changes in the shortest possible time, and we plan to start flight tests as early as 2024,” said vice premier.

According to him, modern digital technologies have significantly reduced the cycle of building the first flight prototype, which usually takes about 2-2.5 years.

"The deadlines are as short as possible. Now the work on the Checkmate aircraft is at the stage of preparing the production of the first prototypes," Manturov said.

The fifth-generation light single-engine fighter Su-75 Checkmate ("Checkmate") developed by Sukhoi (part of the UAC of the Rostec state corporation) was presented in July 2021 at the MAKS air show. Then it was reported about plans to lift it into the air in 2023, and from 2026 to begin serial deliveries.

First of all, the aircraft will be export-oriented, in particular, to African countries, India and Vietnam, Yuri Borisov said, being Deputy Prime Minister (now the head of Roskosmos). The developers are also counting on an order from the Ministry of Defense. According to the head of Rostec, Sergei Chemezov, the Russian military is showing interest in an unmanned version of the Checkmate.

Rostec and UAC, especially for Wings of War, agreed to answer a number of questions dedicated to the ARMY-2022 forum:
Rostec and UAC prepared some interesting surprise for visitors?

The UAC demonstrates the Su-57 in the immediate vicinity of the building of the Patriot Convention and Exhibition Center. This is the highlight of the forum. In addition, the corporation introduced an updated unified corporate identity.

Does the interest of foreign countries in our aviation equipment remain, can we expect firm contracts during the "Army-2022"?

As part of the forum, Rosoboronexport receives more than 70 delegations from 50 countries. Foreign partners and representatives of various law enforcement agencies will be able to get acquainted with the weapons and military equipment they are interested in. Meetings and negotiations have been held, and a number of important contracts and agreements with foreign customers and Russian manufacturers are expected to be signed.

Is the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation now more interested in the products of the UAC or Russian Helicopters?

As part of the state defense order, Rostec supplies products from both holdings to the troops. The Ministry of Defense determines the need for a particular technique. Our business is to build it in the required volumes and ship it within the required time frame.

Is the domestic military aviation industry waiting for some significant order from the Ministry of Defense and will it be public?

Rostec accounts for up to 40% of the total state defense order. The state corporation supplies over 400 types of weapons and military equipment. Last year we ensured almost 100% execution of the State Defense Order. This year it has been seriously increased. After the start of a special military operation in Ukraine, the intensity of the work of defense industry enterprises increased. The moment for the country is serious and responsible, therefore we are taking all necessary measures for the unconditional execution of the state defense order and the solution of other tasks facing the state and industry.

Will we see, as part of the flight program, the performance of the Su-57?

In the flight program of the forum, it is planned to show the aircraft that are in service with the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Is the execution of the contract for the production of serial Su-57 on schedule? Sanctions pressure and the general tense geopolitical situation in general do not interfere with the production of military aircraft and the Su-57 in particular?

Despite external pressure, the implementation of all aircraft programs continues. UAC with allied enterprises performs work in accordance with the concluded contracts.

Should we expect the delivery of new Su-57s to the troops this year?

Yes, it is planned to hand over the next cars.

Many aircraft have nicknames given to them by pilots or production workers. Did the Su-57 manage to get some kind of nickname among the military or engineers?

The promising aviation complex was first assigned the T-50 index. The "T" is traditionally given to delta wing designs. Well, for the number, the designers called the plane "fifty kopecks". In 2017, the fighter received its current name, the Su-57. It has a hidden meaning. 5 is the fifth generation, and 7 personifies the connection with the best domestic fighters of the Su line, which had the "seven" in the name - Su-7, Su-17, Su-27. NATO assigned our aircraft the code designation Felon.

At what stage is the work on the Checkmate project now?

The Checkmate project is in the pre-production phase of the first prototypes. The first flight is scheduled for 2024. For now, we adhere to these dates. By the way, the Roselectronics holding has developed the latest communication complex for Checkmate. It just shows up on the forum.

Are the S-70 Okhotnik successfully tested? Will the timing of the start of its mass production change?

The work is progressing according to the schedule. The first flight under the program of an experimental model with a traditional jet nozzle was made in August 2019. It lasted 20 minutes. In the same year, he made his first joint flight with the fifth generation Su-57 fighter. In December last year, the "Hunter" with a flat jet nozzle was demonstrated for the first time, which has reduced radar visibility and a new ground control post. The start of deliveries of Okhotnik is scheduled for 2023.

Originally identified in 1982 by US reconnaissance satellites as the 'Ram-M' single-seat high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, and later codenamed 'Mystic' by NATO, the twin-boom straight-wing jet, currently publicised as a high-altitude research aircraft able to carry around 1500kg of sensors, is now known to exist in two versions. The first of two prototype aircraft, designated M-17 Stratosfera ('Mystic-A'), first flew in 1988 and are powered by a single 68.6kN thrust Rybinsk RD-36-51V turbojet developed from the Tu-144 SST powerplant. The M-55 Geofizika ('Mystic-B') , has two 49kN thrust Perm/Soloviev PS-30-V12 turbojets mounted side-by-side behind a raised cockpit installed in a longer nose, together with a reduced span wing.

The M-55 'Mystic-B' differs from the first M-17 Stratosfera in having a longer jetpipe, shorter engine intakes, a reprofiled nose and an undernose FLIR turret. A subsequent version of the Geofizika is twin-engined.
