The timing of the reopening of the former Russian Volkswagen factory has been announced 14:01

January 12, 2024

The former Volkswagen automobile plant in Kaluga is expected to be operational again in the first half of 2024. In this respect reports interfax.ru, citing the Governor of the Kaluga Region Vladislav Shapsha.

“I am sure it will start working in the first half of this year. The final touches on these negotiations have already been completed,” Shapsha said.

In May 2023, Volkswagen Group announced the sale of its assets in Russia, including the Kaluga plant. The new owner was Art-Finance LLC, affiliated with the Avilon dealer holding company. Volkswagen Group Rus will continue to operate in Russia under the name AGR LLC (AGR Automotive Group).

The Volkswagen concern announced the suspension of automobile production in Kaluga and contract assembly in Nizhny Novgorod on March 3, 2022. The company attributed the decision to the disruption of supply chains due to sanctions imposed by the West due to the events in Ukraine. Volkswagen Taos, Skoda Kodiaq, Skoda Karoq and Skoda Octavia models were produced at the GAZ plant in Nizhny Novgorod, and at the German group’s own plant in Kaluga – Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen Polo and Skoda Rapid.

Russians chose the optimal mileage for changing the oil in a car 14:05

Anika
By ANIKA
January 12, 2024

Engine oil in a car can be changed after 15 thousand kilometers, but if the car regularly moves in traffic jams or the engine operates under load, this figure is reduced by half. Expert Mikhail Kolodochkin from Za Rulem magazine told socialbites.ca about this. He warned that the engine may seize due to untimely oil changes.
“Every automaker makes average recommendations for oil changes. Basically this is 15 thousand km – a recommendation based on our own tests. But this does not take into account the burdens,” Kolodochkin said.
According to him, recently manufacturers began to add a clause to the car’s user manual stating that when used in difficult conditions, including driving in urban traffic jams, this conditional replacement parameter should be divided in half.
“You don’t need to experiment on your car. Experienced car owners who are accustomed to everything usually change the oil every 5-7 thousand km. And this is the best option for the engine to last for a long time. But with such frequent changes, in no case should you buy the cheapest and worst oil with the expectation that after a few thousand kilometers it will still need to be drained,” explained the auto expert.

Experts described changes in the structure of the Russian car market in 2023

308abcf2-670-0.jpg

In 2023, Russians bought more than 1 million new passenger cars. This is 69% more than a year ago. How the structure of the market of new passenger cars now looks like at the end of 2023, told the experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT". Thus, the share of the premium segment for the last year has decreased from 7% (in 2022) to 3% (in 2023). Accordingly, the share of the mass segment grew from 93% to 97%.
The share of legal entities in the structure of the car market has also decreased: if in 2022 they accounted for 24.2% of total sales, now - 22.3%. But the share of individuals, on the contrary, increased - from 75.8% to 77.7%. It also became known that station wagons have become even more popular among Russians, which, of course, is due to the continuing growth in sales of crossovers and SUVs. Thus, for the year, the share of station wagons in the market grew from 59% to 66%.
At the same time, the share of sedans decreased from 25% to 19%, and hatchbacks - from 13% to 11%. As for the market structure by fuel type, petrol cars have become even more popular. Their share in 2023 was 93.7%, up from 91.6% a year ago. At the same time, the share of sales of diesel cars fell by more than half - from 6.6% to 2.8%. Hybrid cars, whose share rose from 1.1% to 2.1%, and electric cars (from 0.5% to 1.3%) showed growth.

6023923c-670-0.jpg

The share of imported cars in 2023 accounted for 54% of total sales of new passenger cars in our country. This was reported by experts of the agency "AUTOSTAT". They noted that at the end of 2022, the market share of imported cars was 25%. Thus, for the year it increased 2.2 times. At the same time, the share of sales of cars supplied under official import (in fact, from China) has grown most significantly - from 14% to 42%, i.e. threefold.
But the share of the market of alternative (parallel) imports increased insignificantly - from 11% to 12%. In addition, the share of sales of domestic brands has increased for the last year - from 29% to 33%. But for foreign cars of local assembly this indicator decreased more than threefold - from 46% to 13%. As experts of AUTOSTAT agency note, if in 2022 foreign cars of Russian production dominated in our market, in 2023 those assembled abroad prevailed.

Sales of new LCVs grew by 20% in 2023

0b624b2c-670-0.jpg

For the whole last year, 90.4 thousand new light commercial vehicles (LCV) were sold in Russia, which is 20% more than in 2022. Recall that these statistics are based on the data of JSC "PPK "*, using the segmentation of the agency "AUTOSTAT". Thus, we refer some models of pickup trucks to passenger cars rather than LCVs. The leader of the light commercial vehicles market in our country remains the domestic brand GAZ, which accounted for more than half (58%) of the total volume in 2023.
In quantitative terms, this amounts to 52.5 thousand vehicles. Next in the ranking are three more Russian brands - UAZ (15.9 thousand vehicles), Sollers (7.7 thousand vehicles) and LADA (4.7 thousand vehicles). The Korean Hyundai (2,000 vehicles) is also in the top 5.

Russian car market returns to the top five European leaders in 2023

5387fc7d-670-0.jpg

The Russian car market, which in 2022 for the first time in modern history fell out of the top five European leaders, at the end of last year was able to somewhat restore its position, taking fifth place in the European championship. According to the data obtained by the agency "AUTOSTAT" in the national associations of automakers in Europe, the leader in car sales in 2023 was Germany, where 2 million 844 thousand 609 cars were sold (+7.3%).
As noted in the Association of the German automotive industry (VDA), the positive dynamics is recorded for the second year in a row, but last year's result is still 21% below the level of "pre-pandemic" 2019. Second place among the largest European car markets went to the UK with 1 million 903,054 vehicles (+17.9%). The third result was shown by France with 1 million 774 thousand 739 cars sold (+16.1%). Then comes Italy, whose dealers sold 1 million 565 thousand 815 cars (+18.9%). If Russia is taken into account when considering the European car market, our country has risen to the fifth line of the European rating.
As reported by experts of "AUTOSTAT" agency with reference to the data of JSC "PPK "*, the volume of the passenger car market in Russia at the end of 2023 was 1 million 058 thousand 708 vehicles (+69%). We would also add that the Spanish car market last year increased by 16.7% to 949,472 cars. As noted in the Spanish Association of manufacturers of cars and trucks (ANFAC), the growth in sales was contributed to improved availability of cars at dealers, while demand was restrained by inflation and rising interest rates, which did not allow to reach the "pre-pandemic" 1-million mark.

Hyundai Sells Russian Factory For Just Over $100
The company's main factory in Russia has the capacity to build over 200,000 units per year

Hyundai Sells Russian Factory For Just Over $100

Hyundai is the latest company to sell its factory in Russia, with the carmaker ditching the plant for a nominal 10,000 rubles, the equivalent of just $111 at current rates.

Russian firm Art-Finance has purchased the assets and the sale includes a clause where Hyundai can buy back the factory within two years of the sale. The deal was approved in a board meeting earlier this week and has also received the go-ahead from Russia’s government commission on foreign asset sales.
Hyundai has said it will take a 287 billion won ($219.19 million) loss and plans to complete the deal by December 28.

Operations at the St. Petersburg plant were suspended in March 2022 following the invasion of Russia in Ukraine. The site has an annual capacity of over 200,000 units and has been responsible for building the Hyundai Solaris, Hyundai Creta, Kia Rio, and Kia Rio X-Line.

The carmaker has been hit hard by dwindling sales across the country. Together with Kia, they were among the top three selling brands in Russia before the war. The Korea Times notes that it sold just six new vehicles in August this year, a dramatic decrease from the 2,892 units sold a year earlier. Hyundai and Kia sold a combined 400,000 vehicles in Russia in 2019, and as of 2021, the two brands had a 22.5% share of Russia’s total vehicle market.

A number of other major Western automakers have sold their local operations in Russia for nominal fees over the past 18 months. In October last year, Nissan sold its local facilities to Russia’s Central Research and Development Automobile and Engine Institute for just €1, meaning it lost 100 billion yen ($687 million). Like Hyundai’s deal, it has the option to buy back the operations within the next six years.

Moscow Polytechnic University unveiled the prototype of the Russian electric car Amber on Dec. 18, sarcastically dubbed the "Tesla Killer" on social media.
Its development was reportedly commissioned by the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad, known for producing cars from BMW, Ford, KIA, and Hyundai until Western sanctions prompted a shift to this new venture.

The plant will have to settle for this "monster" now.

While the introduction of this electric car horrified many Russian citizens, most users saw it as an opportunity to mock the long-suffering Russian automotive industry.

Amber stands out not just for its design but also for claims that its engine, inverter, control boards, and batteries will be of Russian origin.
Therefore, discussing the quality of this product is unwarranted, even if most of its components, as is often the case in the Russian Federation, turn out to be Chinese.

They talked about the real level of localization of Lada cars at AvtoVAZ

Anika
ByANIKA
January 12, 2024

The level of localization of modern Lada cars depends on the specific model. In this respect report “Autonews of the day”, referring to the company’s president, Maxim Sokolov.
According to him, the Granta and Niva models have reached almost complete technological dominance and the level of localization is 99 percent. Vesta’s localization rate is 95% and the company is working to approach 100%.
Speaking about the degree of localization of Lada Largus, the production of which is planned to restart at the plant in Izhevsk in May, the head of AvtoVAZ noted that “the situation is constantly and rapidly improving.”
It happened before that knownThat AvtoVAZ does not exclude the possibility of releasing even more simplified versions of Lada Granta if there is demand. According to Sokolov, everything depends on demand. Lada Granta cars are used not only in cities, but also in rural areas, where simplified configurations are especially in demand. If a buyer is ready to give up conventional electric power steering in order to buy a car for 10 thousand rubles cheaper, AvtoVAZ is ready to give him this opportunity.

Chinese companies have divided the Russian automobile market among themselves. What will happen next Autoexpert Moseev: Chinese cars will become cheaper in the next three months

Anika
ByANIKA
January 12, 2024

Last year, the Russian automobile market grew by 58%, taking into account the supply of automobiles through parallel import channels. This is evidenced by statistics of the Committee of Automobile Manufacturers of the Association of European Businesses (AEB) in the Russian Federation. Manufacturers and importers increased their sales by 36 percent compared to 2022, the worst year of the automobile market in the last 10 years.

According to the data received by the AEB Committee by obtaining application forms from manufacturers and official importers, 937 thousand new passenger and light commercial vehicles were sold in Russia in 2023. JSC “Passport Industrial Consulting” has other data – they are based on certificates of registration of cars with the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate – 1.13 million units.
Who swims in gold
At the end of the year, the leader among automobile companies was the domestic AvtoVAZ.It sold 352.5 thousand cars, which means an 87% increase compared to the previous year. It is followed by Chinese Haval and Chery with sales of 119 and 118 thousand cars, respectively. Haval sales increased more than 3.5 times compared to 2022. The Chery brand recorded a threefold increase.

In fourth place is the Geely brand, which shipped 84 thousand cars to Russian customers last year, compared to 24.4 thousand in 2022. It is followed by domestic GAZ with 56 thousand light commercial vehicles (33% increase on an annual basis).
Taking into account the sub-brands Exeed, Omoda and Jaecoo, according to market results, the Chery concern took second place in terms of sales volumes, right behind AvtoVAZ.
Total sales of the brands of this Chinese automobile giant reached 210.4 thousand cars. Another 138.5 thousand vehicles were sold under Great Wall Corporation’s Haval, Tank, GWM and Ora brands.
Best sellers
At the end of 2023, the ten most popular passenger cars in Russia included three Ladas and seven models of Chinese brands. Among the 25 best-selling cars, the Chinese have 21 cars.
According to the 12-month results, Granta and Niva took the first two places with 206.1 thousand cars and 90.2 thousand cars, respectively. This is followed by Haval Jolion (58.2 thousand cars) and Chery Tiggo 7 Pro (52.6 thousand cars).

Haval

Domestic Lada Vesta took fifth place. UAZ Patriot SUV was in 17th place.
The result is beyond expectations
The results for 2023 exceeded experts’ expectations. At the beginning of this year, the AEB Automobile Manufacturers Committee guessNo more than 770 thousand cars will be sold in Russia, the actual result exceeded 1.1 million. The 2024 forecast will reach 1.3 million cars with an increase of 15 percent.
According to Oleg Moseev, founder of the Automarketer project, in reality the result may be higher:
“We can say that the outcome of 2023 is good, with the high prices continuing throughout the year, increasing borrowing costs and the decrease in parallel imports in the fourth quarter. It is clear that there will be a slight increase in 2024; “Car availability is higher, with sedans appearing that were in short supply last year.”
He added that negative factors include the low exchange rate of the ruble and high loan interest rates, which will not fall before the second half of the year.
Chinese cars will become cheaper
Due to the excess of Chinese cars imported to Russia and the increase in the cost of credit due to the Central Bank’s interest rate increase, prices will have to be reduced in the near future, which will be good news for customers, but bad for dealers. In addition, Moseev continues that Chinese automobile companies are preparing extremely ambitious plans for the Russian market for 2024.
“Chinese brands will have to fight for the consumer primarily through pricing policy. There is no longer a shortage and prices will need to be reduced or plans reduced to increase sales. And if you add up all the plans of Chinese automakers for 2024, it turns out that they want to sell 1.3 million cars,” explains the expert.
Moseev believes that we should expect discounts on these cars from dealers in the first quarter of next year, and if there is no significant increase in the exchange rate in the second quarter, we will see price adjustments on the part of distributors.
“The price of Chinese cars already included high margins and now they can sacrifice some of that. Dealers and automakers already offer discounts, except for domestic discounts, which have a different status, said Igor Morzharetto, partner of the analytical agency Autostat.
He adds that there is no room for increasing prices: dealers of Chinese brands already have 200 thousand unsold cars that need to be sold. According to their estimates, 1.2-1.3 million new passenger cars will be sold in Russia in 2024, taking into account the need to renew the fleet.

In 2023, new car sales in Russia exceeded 1.1 million. In terms of sales volume, Chinese brands Haval, Chery and Geely were only ahead of the domestic Lada.
