@pmaitra

Please remove LHD from the thread title... It is LPD all the way and we are discussing LHDs.

Since we've had a long discussion, I have retained both LPD and LHD in the title.

Indian Navy LPD to feature electric propulsion, upbeat on DRDO Fuel Cell AIP
April 11, 2013 by P. Chacko Joseph
Mumbai:

India will feature an electric propulsion for its future LPD (Landing Platform Docks) project and the Navy – DRDO Fuel Cell AIP will be ready for submarine refits, said Indian Navy officials during an SMM India (subsidiary of maritime trade fair SMM Hamburg) hosted event on 4th and 5th April.
Indian Navy had used an electric propulsion for its Hindustan Shipyard Limited built Survey vessel INS Darshak, but it was a Direct Current (DC) unit. The DC is seen in submarines, but it could not be adopted for surface ships. There are plans to adopt a shaft propulsion on LPD instead of a Pod propulsion as in the Mistral class which evinced heated arguments. In its LPD RFI, Indian Navy has asked for information for both twin shaft configuration, with twin rudders and Fixed Pitch Propellers; and shock graded podded propulsion.

This is an interesting piece that sheds some more light on Indian requirements. Specifically, the IN's desire for shock-resistant (aka military-grade) hulls/machinery. Mistrals are only built to commercial standards, which is why they're so much cheaper/more-comfortable than their counterparts to buy and operate. Depending on one's point of view, this is either a very-good or very-bad development.

The article also indicates that the IN is interested in a ship of its own design, which makes sense given that India has already proven capable of developing/building its own large warships. I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

Rs 25,000 cr tender for building helicopter-carrying warships

NEW DELHI: The Defence Ministry has issued a tender expected to be worth over Rs 25,000 crore for building warships which can carry helicopters.

"The tender for the Landing Platform Decks (LPDs) has been issued," Director General Acquisition SB Agnihotri said here at a FICCI interactive session with leaders of the defence industry.

He suggested that the tender was issued as part of efforts by the government to build the capabilities of the indigenous industry.

Agnihotri said he had institutionalised meetings with the industry captains at the Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis and expressed confidence that such interactions would continue even after his departure from the Ministry.

He has been promoted as Secretary to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

The DG Acquisition said the Ministry was taking steps to sort out the problems faced by the industry and keeps updating the Defence Procurement Procedure in this regard.

Juan Carlos is in a class of its own.

Mistral and Izumo are of the same class. Both are LHDs and can carry troops and tanks.

San Antonio class is not a LHD, but carry a similar component of troops and tanks.

Can't think of any other competitor in the same class as above.

Don't know about current tender, but initial talks was about 4 LPDs, 2 built by OEM shipyard and 2 at HSL Vizag.

Re: Rs 25,000 cr tender for building helicopter-carrying warships

if I have my way, I will go for LHDs which will act as mini aircraft carriers for countries who have hardly any ability to wage a war against a nation like India. We must retain the ability to embark fighters from such decks using CATs and arrester landings with a staright deck intead of angled deck with more of Helicopter fleet and less of fighter fleet. Small ac carriers of about 200m length with 20-25k displacement is what we need.
