I am not sure, but for Mistral , Nany have to buy everything from France .
Ther may charge like anything for that . Ship will be cheap but once you got the ship all other things we have to buy from France price tag will be much-much over priced . Who knows .

Instead of going for a solely LPD type vessel, its better to go for the LHDs with substantial troop and vehicle carrying capacity like the Mistrals. They give a lot of versatility for various types of operations whether humanitarian or coastal warfare ones. With 6 helicopter landing spots compared to the San-Antonio class's 4 and capability to carry 16 heavy or 35 light helicopters and 40 MBT is far ahead of the capabilities of the San Antonio class.

Rather we should build large LCU and LHDs instead of LPD. I would vote for the Mistral anyday.

if you don't want the extra helicopters on Mistral, you can convert the hanger deck to carry more ground equipment as it has a connecting ramp between decks. It can carry more of anything than San Antonio.

India could easily issue the planned tender for new submarines... but no. Don't know MDL acronym, but it is IN that is screaming for them to replenish obsolete depleted numbers.
Blame MDL and DCNS/France, Scorpion project is now delayed, much delayed and has affected the plan namely The 30 year Submarine plan. Situation is now desperate and that because Navy is decommissioning older submarines but not getting replacements (Scorpions from MDL). And if that's not all this delay has triggered a debate 'immediate vs future' and severely affecting details of tender for second line. Some want to exercise follow-on clause and order more Scorpions so that gap can be filled easily and speedily, while rest want to go with original plan which is beneficial in long run and doesn't asks for any review in doctrine(formulated for future). Needed to mention that as per 30 year submarine plan beginning of induction of a chosen western design (which is now Scorpion) shall start by 2012 with all 6 inducted by 2018 at the rate of 1/year. Followed by second line (Russian design) beginning induction by 2015-16 with all six joining at 1/year. This to be followed by 12 indigenously designed SSKs (build on experience gained from acquired western and Russian design) whose design work shall complete by the end of this decade and production/induction shall begin at rate of 2/year.

More or less all LHDs are same, deciding factor is going to be price. Besides questions that arises, why are we not designing ourselves with the huge experience we have with IAC and number of LPDs our shipyards have build so far, why are we importing design? Won't it be good if we go alone and rope in experience houses where we need them ( bay area, propulsion, flight-deck)?

Actually blame Navantia, they are transferring most of the ToT for hull construction. Now that they are about out of the picture, timetables are moving much faster.

It is already decided.

No, second line of Scorpene/French sub is just a proposal by MDL, that too riding on desperate circumstance to which it has its own contribution. Navy for instance doesn't look like shaking and instead has told MoD to get first two of six in sail-away condition and rest four from two different Indian shipyard where they will be constructed in parallel. Sounds costly but Navy seems to be in love with quietness/stealthiness of Russian SSKs and eager to gain experience upon so that when her own design bureau starts designing rest of twelve SSKs it has this much loved feature incorporated.

It was mentioned somewhere in the news article that the IN is looking for something similar in capabilities to the Jalashwa. If that is the case, then obviously we will get them cheap, but they are hardly anything compared to the capabilities of the Mistral, Dokdo or even the San Antonio class ships.

Yes, second line of French sub is already +3 at MDL and it can build six more. India's desperate circumstance doesn't have the time or money to wait on a retool. Navy for instance doesn't look like shaking getting as many new subs as fast as possible. The only criteria India really has is Made in India and French sub line at MDL gets that done. That is the way things are... sorry if you don't like it. :sad:

We ll gentlemen it is with immense displeasure and the utmost dissatisfaction that i must announce we have lost yet another cheap and good ship to a foreign navy, how the hell do we keep repeating these blunders i do not know. all i know is that the Foudre would have been good for us.

France sells Foudre LPD to Armada de Chile

The Government of Chile completed negotiations with his French counterpart for the acquisition of amphibious landing ship, Foudre LPD. This ship would replace the Newport class Valdivia LST, retired from active duty with the Navy of Chile on January 14, 2011, after 15 years of service.

French Navy operated two Foudre class ships, the Foudre (L9011), commissioned in 1990 and the Siroco (L9012) commissioned in 1998, both built by DCNS. The class is capable of landing a cavalry regiment of mechanized infantry on unprepared coasts, serve as command ship, serve as a hospital ship with 2 fully equipped operating rooms and 47 beds as well as assisting in humanitarian relief missions , in which case it can accommodate up to 1,600 people. Its endurance at sea is about 30 days.

The ship returned to Toulon at the end of May following a 4-month deployment to the western coast of Africa.
The Foudre has also been offered to the navies of Argentina and Brazil.

The class has a crew of about 200 sailors with facilities to accommodate 467 troops. The flight deck of the ship is 1450 square meters , with space for 7 medium class helictopers (3 landing spots) and can 4 helicopters in its hangar. Foudre class displaces 12,000 tons full load and has a range of 11,000 nm at 15 knots.

The deal is reported to amount around USD80 million.

MoD sucks ... why do we end up paying through our noses for French military acquisitions when other countries can get them cheap?

Hell, that is two perfectly good transport ships that would have filled the short-term gap for IN amphib capability. The other being Largs Bay...

IN can negotiate with the US for the decommissioned USS Tarawa and USS Nassau. These are 44 ton class amphibious assault ships.

I do not believe The Tarawa or the nassau will make good purchases, reason well the age of the ships is my primary reason the hull of the Tarawa was launched in 1973 making it nearly 40 yrs old the Nassau was launched in 1978 making it a shade younger than the Tarawa. On the other hand the Largs bay and the Foudre were launched in 2003 and 1988 respectively making them relatively new platforms.

That may be true. But just consider that USS Nimitz was lunched in 1972 and it is still going strong. Of course these ships are not exactly up for sale at the moment. But if India really insists I think Uncle Sam may consider it.
