Prominent Tibetan monk dies in Chinese prison

Hong Kong (CNN)A prominent Tibetan monk has died in a Chinese prison in Sichuan province, according to the Tibetan government-in-exile.

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was serving a life sentence, according to the Central Tibetan Administration, which operates out of the Indian city of Dharamsala.

In 2002, he had been found guilty of setting off explosions and inciting separation of the state, according to Xinhua, China's state-run news agency.

"We are very sad; it's shocking news for us. He has been a very prominent religious teacher. His case has been brought up internationally for years," Tashi Phuntsok, spokesperson for the Central Tibetan Administration, said.

He had initially been sentenced to death but it was commuted to life in prison in 2005.

The administration said it had received news of Tenzin Delek's death on Sunday from an unnamed but reliable source.

CNN tried to contact the provincial Public Security Bureau in Sichuan but was not able to independently verify his death.

Fair trial denied?
Sophie Richardson, the China director of Human Rights Watch, said that the monk had been denied a fair trial.

"It was done behind closed doors. There was no evidence presented publicly against him and in recent years he was denied access to adequate medical care," she told CNN.

A U.S. State Department spokesperson, John Kirby, urged Chinese authorities to return his body to his family or monastery so that religious rituals could be performed.

"The United States had consistently urged China to release Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, most recently out of concern for his health. We hope Chinese authorities will investigate and make public the circumstances surrounding his death," he said.

According to the Central Tibetan Administration, Tenzin Delek was a role model for the preservation of Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan culture, known for his loyalty to Tibetans' spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

He was also an environmentalist who had opposed mining activities in Tibet, it added.

Free Tibet Students Demand Body of Dead Monk

Student activists have stormed into the Chinese consulate in New York demanding the release of the body of a Tibetan monk who died in prison in China.

Tenzin Delek Rinpoche died on Sunday aged 65, 13 years into a 20-year prison sentence which human rights groups claim was the result of false charges.

Pema Yoko, deputy director of Students for a Free Tibet, was dragged away by security guards from the Chinese consulate along with a fellow activist whilst demanding that authorities release the body to Tenzin Delek's family.

His cousin Geshe Nyima said in a statement: "Tenzin Delek Rinpoche was an innocent monk who suffered over 13 years of unjust imprisonment, torture and abuse in a Chinese prison for simply advocating for the rights and well-being of his people and for expressing his devotion to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

"The Chinese government must immediately release his body so that our family and community may perform the last Buddhist religious rites".

Police in Sichuan province confirmed Tenzin Delek's death on Sunday. Students for a Free Tibet said his family were informed but were not told how he died.

Exiled Tibetans also staged a march on Monday in New Delhi and Dharmsala, carrying posters reading "We want justice" and "Murdered in Prison".

Tenzin Delek was sentenced to death on charges of terror and incitement to separatism in 2002, after he was linked to a blast in Chengdu city that injured three people.

His death sentence was reduced to life in prison in 2005, and then further cut to 20 years. He maintained his innocence throughout his sentence.

The US State Department said it was saddened to learn of the death of the political prisoner.

"The United States had consistently urged China to release Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, most recently out of concern for his health," spokesman John Kirby said in a statement.

"We hope Chinese authorities will investigate and make public the circumstances surrounding his death."

Tenzin Delek was born in 1950 in a Tibetan area of Sichuan and studied from 1982 to 1987 under the Dalai Lama, who recognised him as a tulku, or a reincarnated lama.

Human rights groups believe that his relationship with Chinese officials broke down due to his support for the Dalai Lama as he is considered a separatist by the government.

China violently suppresses Tenzin Delek Rinpoche protest in Tibet

More than 20 Tibetan demonstrators taken to hospital

China’s security forces have broken up a Tibetan demonstration by beating protesters, shooting in the air and deploying tear gas in Nyagchu County.

Several older people were taken to hospital yesterday afternoon (local time) and a further 17, including some nuns, in the evening.

Tibetan protesters are demanding the return of Rinpoche’s body, so that they can carry out traditional funeral rituals.

Deaths in Chinese custody
China’s refusal to hand over the bodies of political prisoners who have died in custody or following self-immolation protests is a consistent and recurring source of grief and anger for Tibetans, who are denied the opportunity to conduct funeral services.

In this case, the prison is also preventing independent determination of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche’s cause of death as he was denied medical parole despite serious illnesses.

Take Action
The US State Department has already issued a statement on his death and calling for his body to be released to his family.

The international community should echo that call and demand that China honours the wishes of the local community instead of responding with brutality to legitimate Tibetan protest.

He was a dreaded terrorist, responsible for thousands of deaths and CCP is the bestest. That man deserves no funeral.
