MANILA , Philippines — The Philippines is looking at arming itself for the first time with dedicated fighter jets made outside of the United States, President Benigno Aquino said May 16 amid a territorial dispute with China.

The Philippines last month requested aircraft, patrol boats and radar systems from its U.S. military ally to help it achieve what the government said would be a "minimum credible defense."

Aquino said that his government had asked to buy second-hand F-16s from the U.S., but the jets' maintenance costs could end up being too high because of their age.

"We might end up spending $400 million or $800 million per squadron, and we were thinking of getting two squadrons," he said in an interview with Manila's Bombo Radio.

"We do have an alternative, and — this is a surprise — it seems we have the capacity to buy brand-new, but not from America," Aquino said, without mentioning the aircraft model. "These are manufactured by another progressive country that I won't name at this point."

Aquino noted that Manila had retired its last fighter jet, a Korean War-vintage F-5, in 2005.

It does continue to fly Italian firm Marchetti's S211 trainer jets, which are sometimes used as ground attack aircraft against various insurgencies.

But along with the F-5, the Philippines had previously relied on obsolete U.S. hand-me-downs, including the T-33 and the P-51 Mustang as dedicated attack fighters. The country now has no effective air defenses.

It is engaged in a tense maritime standoff with China over the disputed Scarborough Shoal and surrounding waters in the South China Sea. Both nations have stationed vessels there for more than a month to assert their sovereignty.

Philippines is no small country. Its population will cross the landmark 100 mil. soon from 97 mil. now. They received 2nd-hand frigates as freebies from the US, and certainly can buy whatever affordable:laugh:But for deterrence? ??

In addition to ongoing boycotts of fruit import and tourism China would simply continue petrolling the waters with surveillance ships of Fishery Admin. which are enough to fend off Philippines gunboats which harassed, detained Chinese fishermen for ransoms and even shot dead fishermen and sank Chinese trawlers years ago.

Most likely the next step is to build up permanent presence on Huangyan like what's done on Meiji (Mischief) Reef, and to go ahead with drilling and exploring activities alone on Reed Bank.

Not yet timing for flexing military muscles.

MANILA - The Philippines' Philex Petroleum Corp said on Tuesday it has discussed a possible partnership with Chinese offshore oil producer CNOOC to develop a natural gas prospect in the disputed South China Sea, a deal that may help ease tension between the two sides.

Phillipines has a poor economy SO they can only afford Mig 29 K Anti Naval FIghters
which India is buying for its Navy

This plane will be very useful for targetting Chinese Naval Ships

The can also look at second hand F 16 s which are available in plenty throughout the world
US approval wont be a problem and the second hand F 16s can be upgraded too

I don't know any Korean War vintage jet fighter of that nomenclature.

Have a look:

Philippines picks TA-50?

T-50 line

June 20/12:

Philippine buy?

ABS-CBN news of the Philippines quotes Philippine air force officials as saying they will buy 12 TA-50s, in order to restore the air force's ability to police Philippine airspace.

That ability was lost when the country retired its remaining F-5 aircraft in 2005, and the USA no longer bases fighters at Clark AB or USNB Subic Bay. Chinese violations of Philippine airspace and claimed maritime zones have been creating a lot of tension, and the country has been looking at its options for a couple of years now. Their efforts have involved requests for 12 used American F-16s, as well as examination of KAI's TA-50 and Alenia's M-346 Master. The M-346 doesn't have an armed version yet, and the USA hasn't issued a formal DSCA clearance yet. That leaves the TA-50 as its only approved option that can be bought right now.

The TA-50 deal is reportedly worth around 25 billion pesos (about $590 million), with a contract expected by the end of 2012. All 12 fighter jets are expected to be delivered by the end of 2013. If so, the Philippines would join its neighbor Indonesia as a TA-50 customer.

A 2nd contract for 6 fixed-wing aircraft is expected to replace the country's OV-10 Bronco counter-insurgency planes, and designs from the USA (likely the AT-6B), Brazil (Super Tucano), and Korea (likely the KT-1) are expected to compete. Given the TA-50's 2-seat design and ability to use laser-guided weapons, another possibility would be to add options to any TA-50 contract, and use it in both roles. This would be less effective for counter-insurgency, or as an intermediate trainer, but contribute more to airspace policing and defense. It depends where the country's priorities lie at the time, and external events are unstable enough to change them. Philippines' ABS-CBN | ABS-CBN re: 2nd buy | South Korea's Yonhap.

Philex, Chinese firm discuss South China Sea gas project | ABS-CBN News
If China is going to to try an economic war with all its neighbours, it wont really work. You will not be able to sustain it forever. Remember, India in the long term is an even bigger market that China will ever be. So economic war on ASEAN countries will backfire big time.
