Chinese national shot in Karachi 'targeted' attack dies

A Chinese national who was critically injured in Karachi on Monday when unknown suspects opened fire at his car has died, said the doctors at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC).

Unknown suspects in a car opened fire at the Chinese national's car in Clifton, near Zamzama Park, in what police have called a targeted attack.

Initially, station house officer (SHO) Clifton had said that the Chinese citizen, an employee at a shipping firm in Karachi, was alone in his car at the time of the attack. It later emerged that there were two Chinese nationals in the car when the suspects opened fire, however, one had managed to escape the crime scene. He has not yet been found.

2 dead, 3 injured as security force vehicle comes under attack in North Waziristan

Two men belonging to the security forces lost their lives while three others were injured on Wednesday when their vehicle was targeted in Mir Ali tehsil of North Waziristan.

According to sources the three injured men have been transferred to a Combined Military Hospital (CHM) nearby.

Political administrations of the area claimed that terrorists fired rockets on a vehicle carrying members of the security forces Edak area of Mir Ali tehsil.

The area where the attack occurred has been sealed and a search operation for the perpetrators of the attack is underway.

The uptick in attacks targeting security forces raises questions over the efficacy of counter-terror operations in different parts of the country, including North Waziristan where the army was said to have cleared the area of the presence of terrorists under Operation Zarb-i-Azb which was launched in June 2014.

At least 15 people, including eight military and paramilitary personnel, were killed in four separate attacks in North Waziristan in the past two months.

US drone strike kills key Taliban commander in NWA

MIRANSHAH: A US drone strike killed at least two people including a key Taliban commander in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) close to the Afghanistan border on Thursday.

The Taliban commander killed in the drone strike has been identified as Sajna Mehsud, Geo News reported.

As per details, A US drone strike killed at least two suspected militants near Pak-Afghan border in North Waziristan Agency late on Thursday.

Earlier in January the United States carried out its first drone strike of the year near border area of the Hangu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, claiming to kill two alleged Taliban commanders.

While according to Pakistan Foreign Office “a camp of Afghan refugees was targeted in that drone strike., which Pakistan had condemned and protested.

Religious parties assemble in Mardan to demand release of men convicted in Mashal Khan murder case

Multiple religious parties are set to protest on Friday against the conviction of 31 men found to have been involved in the brutal murder of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan student Mashal Khan, who was lynched in April 2017 after being falsely accused of blasphemy.

The protest will be held after Friday prayers at a mosque in Mardan, where different religious and political parties will converge under the 'Khatm-i-Nabuwwat Mardan' banner to protest the convictions.

The protest has been sponsored by the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Maulana Samiul Haq's Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam.

The JI also held a gathering in Mardan on Wednesday to 'welcome' those acquitted by the ATC.

Four FC personnel martyred in targeted attack in Quetta

QUETTA : At least four Frontier Corps (FC) personnel were martyred on Wednesday in a targeted firing incident in Quetta.

The FC personnel were patrolling the area near Sariab road early morning when unknown assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at their vehicle, critically injuring all four inside the car. The security officials were moved to Civil Hospital where they breathed their last.

Governor Balochistan Mohammad Khan Achakzai condemns the attack

Condemning the targeted incident, Governor Balochistan Mohammad Achakzai expressed condolences to the bereaved families. He urged the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) arrest the culprits at the earliest.

KP govt to approve Rs277m grant for Darul Uloom Haqqania

The provincial government of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) is set to approve a Rs277 million grant for Darul Uloom Haqqania, DawnNewslearnt on Friday.

This is not the first time that the madressah would be on the receiving end of a gracious grant from Pakistan Tekhreek-i-Insaf (PTI) led KP government as Rs300m were allocated for it in the budget for financial year 2016-17.

Defending the move, PTI chief Imran Khan had said that the funds and support would help the seminary students assimilate in our society, bring them in to the mainstream and keep them away from radicalisation.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Aftab Mehsud, a young man who played an active role in the sit-in held recently in Islamabad to protest against the killing of Naqeebullah Mehsud, was found shot dead under mysterious circumstances in a suburban area of the city on Saturday.

According to an official of the city’s Saddar police station, Attaullah, the bullet-riddled body of Aftab was found at an under-construction house in the city’s Naqeshbund Town.

Sources said that a piece of paper was found with the body on which names of the victim and his father and his telephone number were written.

Aftab’s father, Khair Badshah Mehsud, told the police that his son had left his home on Friday night. He said he received a call on Saturday and was informed about the body of his son.

A student of Gomal University in Dera Ismail Khan, Aftab hailed from Makeen area of South Waziristan Agency. He moved to Karachi where he became friends with Naqeebullah Mehsud.

The sources said that after the killing of Naqeebullah in a fake encounter with a police party led by suspended SSP Rao Anwar in Karachi, Aftab played an active role in the 10-day Islamabad sit-in which was organised by Pakhtun Tahaffuz Movement and some rights groups.

Apart from the arrest of Naqeebullah’s killers, the sit-in participants also demanded recovery of missing persons from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. They also protested against alleged mistreatment with tribal people at security check-posts.

After assurances by some government functionaries for the acceptance of some of their demands, the protesters ended the sit-in.

The police have registered a case against unidentified people for the murder of Aftab.
