5 killed in suicide attack in northwest Pakistan

A suicide bomber targeted the convoy of a senior security forces official in Peshawar city of northwest Pakistan on Friday, killing five persons and injuring over a dozen others, officials and witnesses said.

The attacker detonated his explosive vest when the convoy of Frontier Constabulary commandant Abdul Majeed Khan Marwat slowed down near a check post in Sadar area within the Peshawar cantonment, witnesses said.
The commandant remained safe though his vehicle was damaged. Two women were killed instantly while three persons succumbed to their injuries in hospital, officials said.

The injured were taken to the Lady Reading Hospital and a military hospital. Officials said four Frontier Constabulary personnel were among the injured. Some of the wounded were in a serious condition, they said.

Marwat told the media that his convoy was the target of the attack. He said the explosion occurred a short distance from his vehicle.

Footage on television showed several vehicles and motorcycles were damaged by the explosion.

Ambulances rushed the injured to hospital as paramilitary personnel and army soldiers cordoned off the area.

Witnesses said they had seen the body parts and the head of the suicide bomber.

No group claimed responsibility for the blast though such attacks are usually blamed on the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

In August 2010, then Frontier Constabulary commandant Sifwat Ghayur was killed in a similar suicide attack on his convoy in Sadar area of Peshawar.

Pak Court Declares US Drone Strikes As Illegal :laugh::lol:

A Pakistani court today declared that US drone strikes on al-Qaeda and Taliban elements in the country's lawless tribal belt were tantamount to a "war crime" and the armed forces would have the right to shoot down the CIA-operated spy planes.

The Peshawar High Court issued the verdict against the US drones in response to four petitions that contended the missile attacks killed civilians and caused collateral damage.

The two-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan ruled the drone strikes were a "blatant violation of basic human rights" and the UN Charter and "thus, it is held to be a war crime cognisable by the International Court of Justice or Special Tribunal for War Crimes".

Drone strikes "carried out against a handful of alleged militants, who are not engaged in combat with the US authorities or forces, amount to breach of international law" and a "blatant violation of the sovereignty" of Pakistan, the judges said in their order.

Pakistan's armed forces will ensure that drone strikes are not conducted in future, the order said.

"Proper warning be administered in this regard and if that does not work, the government of Pakistan and state institutions, particularly the security forces, shall have the right to (shoot) down the drones"¦," the order said.

The court further directed the Foreign Ministry to move a resolution against the drone attacks in the UN.

If the US does not comply with any resolution passed by the UN, Islamabad should sever all ties with Washington and deny logistic facilities to America, the order said.

The court contended that the US government was "bound to compensate all the victims" of drone strikes.

US officials have said that the drones target al-Qaeda and Taliban elements in Pakistan's tribal regions who are blamed for cross-border attacks in Afghanistan.

Pakistan insists that the US spy planes kill innocent people, damage civilian property and are counter-productive to the war on terror.

The US has rejected Pakistan's calls for halting drone strikes.

The Peshawar High Court had earlier reserved its verdict after the completion of arguments by lawyers for the federal government and the petitioners, including the Defence of Pakistan Council, an amalgamation of religious groups, tribal elders and rights groups.

The petitioners had asked the court to direct the government to make public any secret deal with the US on drone strikes, stop drone strikes by force, take the issue to the UN Security Council and pay compensation to families of people killed in missile attacks.

Government lawyers had informed the court that Pakistan had no agreement with the US on drone strikes, which were carried out against its consent.

Former military ruler Pervez Musharraf recently told the media that Pakistan had signed off on some drone strikes during his regime.

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan has said that he will order the air force to shoot down US drones if his party comes to power in the May 11 general election.

12 killed, 17 injured as bomb hits security vehicle in SW Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, May 23 (Xinhua) -- At least 12 people including 10 security men were killed and 17 others injured when a bomb hit security forces' vehicle in Pakistan's southwest Quetta city on Thursday morning, local officials said.

Fayyaz Sumbal, the deputy inspector general police, said that some unknown militants targeted a vehicle jointly used by Balochistan Constabulary, a local paramilitary force, and police with a remote controlled device at northern Bypass area of Quetta, the capital city of the country's southwest Balochistan province.

He said that the bomb carrying an estimated 100 kg of explosives was fixed in a roadside parked car that was detonated as soon as the security vehicle passed by it.

In the blast, five people died right on the spot while seven others succumbed to injuries at Civil Hospital Quetta, to which the injured people were shifted by local police and rescue workers.

Hospital administration said that the injured people include 12 security personnel and five civilians.

Local authorities imposed emergency at the hospital to ensure best medical treatment to the injured people.

The powerful blast completely destroyed the vehicle and several nearby shops.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

U.S. launches first drone strike in Pakistan since election | Reuters

(Reuters) - A U.S. drone strike killed seven people in Pakistan's North Waziristan region on Wednesday, security officials said, the first such attack since a May 11 general election in which the use of the unmanned aircraft was a major issue.

U.S. President Barack Obama recently indicated he was scaling back the drone strike program, winning cautious approval from Pakistan, a key ally in the U.S. fight on militancy.

A Pakistani Foreign Ministry official condemned all such strikes.

"Any drone strike is against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Pakistan and we condemn it," the official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters.

Pakistani security officials and Pashtun tribesmen in the northwestern region said the drone fired two missiles that struck a mud-built house at Chashma village, 3 km (2 miles) east of Miranshah, the region's administrative town.

They said seven people were killed and four wounded. It was not immediately clear if the victims were the intended targets.

"Tribesmen started rescue work an hour after the attack and recovered seven bodies," said resident Bashir Dawar. "The bodies were badly damaged and beyond recognition."

North Waziristan is on the Afghan border and has long been a stronghold of militants including Afghan Taliban and their al Qaeda and Pakistani Taliban allies.

Prime Minister-elect Nawaz Sharif said this month that drone strikes were a "challenge" to Pakistan's sovereignty.

"We will sit with our American friends and talk to them about this issue," he said.

Obama's announcement of scaling back drone strikes was widely welcomed by the people of North Waziristan, where drones armed with missiles have carried out the most strikes against militants over the past seven years, sometimes with heavy civilian casualties.

The strike also coincided with the first session of the newly elected provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the former Northwest Frontier Province.

Former cricketer Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party won most seats in the assembly and has been very critical of drone strikes in the region.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said last week it appreciated Obama's acknowledgement that force alone did not work, adding that the root causes of terrorism had to be addressed.

"On the use of drone strikes, the government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that (they) are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives, have human rights and humanitarian implications and violate the principles of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and international law," it said.

US drone strike kills 17 in Pakistan
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan — A US drone attack struck a compound of the Al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network in Pakistan's northwestern tribal belt, killing at least 17 militants, Pakistani officials said.
Security officials told AFP that Afghan and Pakistani militants were among the dead at the compound in the town of Miranshah, but that there was no immediate confirmation of any high-value target.
Unmanned aircraft fired four missiles into the compound in the main market area of the main town of North Waziristan, which is Pakistan's most notorious hub of Islamist militants.
US drone strikes are rarely reported in built-up areas of the semi-autonomous tribal belt and officials said the aircraft flew over the market area for hours before striking.
"Death toll in drone strike has risen to 17," a security official based in North Waziristan told AFP. Officials had overnight said four militants were killed.
Intelligence officials confirmed the toll and said the compound had belonged to militants from the Haqqani network, which the United States has blamed for some of the deadliest and most high-profile attacks on Western and government targets in Afghanistan.
It was the deadliest US drone strike reported in Pakistan since 18 insurgents were killed on the border between North Waziristan and the tribal district of Orakzai on October 11, 2012.
It was also the second US drone attack reported inside Pakistan since Nawaz Sharif was sworn in as prime minister in June.
The Pakistani government on Wednesday condemned the drone strike as a violation of sovereignty, as it does routinely after each attack is reported.
"The government of Pakistan has consistently maintained that drone strikes are counter-productive, entail loss of innocent civilian lives and have human rights and humanitarian implications," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Washington views drone strikes as a vital tool in the fight against Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants holed up in the lawless tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan.

I personally could never condone deaths of 180 million humans, nor nukes being exploded mid-air only a few hundred miles from my home.

Frankly, imho our corrupt politicians are responsible for far more of our problems than Pakistani terrorists.

Pls understand that we are not dealing with rational minds in Pak establishment. We are dealing with lunatics who are fired by the imagination of making india their slave and killing all hindus. You scratch any so called right thinking Paki and you will find the same emotions and dream of converting India into a slave nation.
If you do not make the choice, you will be left with no choice as Pak will use its Nukes. So either we continue to suffer or we have to use our nukes. What wud you prefer, a nuke explosion in your home or a nuke explosion few hundred kms from your home? Make your choice.

Warehouse seizure

Pakistani security forces seized nearly 100 tons of potassium chlorate, a common bomb-making chemical, and detained 10 people on Tuesday night during a raid in Quetta, Balochistan (BBC, RFE/RL). According to Col. Maqbool Shah, a senior commander for the Frontier Corps, the raid came a day after two men were arrested in Quetta while transporting 15 tons of potassium chlorate in a truck; the two men later led officers to a warehouse that was stocked with the chemical, as well as detonators, guns, and ammunition. While the stockpiles have not been linked to any particular militant group, potassium chlorate was used in two bombings by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi earlier this year.

A separate raid by security and intelligence services in Lahore on Tuesday morning broke up an illegal telephone exchange that may have been used by al-Qaeda (Dawn, Pajhwok). According to news reports, the exchange may have facilitated communications related to the kidnappings of Dr. Warren Weinstein, a U.S. national; Shahbaz Taseer, the son of slain Punjabi Governor Salman Taseer; and several other people. Hundreds of thousands of cellphone SIM cards, as well as weapons and explosives, were seized in the raid. Six suspects from the Dawood and Hassan Gull terrorist groups, which have links to al-Qaeda, were taken into custody.
