The Pakistan Navy was asked to acquire four additional F-22P frigates after the fourth in the series, PNS Aslat , was launched in June 2011 at the Karachi Shipyard, while the first three were all built in China in Shanghai. But the choice of the naval forces of Pakistan is finally focused on the Type 054A, the multi-role frigate of the Chinese navy whose production is about to end after a series of 30 ships.
According to the Pakistan Navy (PN) Twitter account dated June 1, an acquisition contract for two Type 054A frigates was signed with Pakistan's Ministry of Defense Production (MoD-P) in Rawalpindi. Chinese Export Shipbuilding Trading Company Ltd (CSTC), in the presence of Vice Admiral Faisal Rasul Lodhi, Deputy Chief of Staff of the PN, as well as several senior Chinese military and industrial leaders.

The text indicates that the Pakistan Navy should receive the four vessels in its fleets by 2021 , and that these will significantly improve its combat capabilities, while effectively contributing to maritime security operations in the region. There is every reason to believe that another agreement had already been contracted before, and that this new signature would consist of an additional order.
This confirms what a Pakistani frigate commander said last year about the purchase of Type 054A.
Designed by the CSIC Group 701 Institute, the frigate Type 054A has the primary mission "anti-submarine fleet control" as mentioned in the specifications of the staff of the Chinese Navy. The 3,600-ton (standard) building is therefore equipped with a number of weapon systems for this function, such as Type 183 acoustic control systems, Type 562 anti-torpedo control, Type hull sonar. 307 and Type 206 Trailer Sonar (updated to Type 311 later), Yu-7 torpedo launcher, WHH-003A anti-submarine rocket, and YU anti-submarine missiles. 8.
The ship is also equipped with eight YJ-83J anti-ship missiles, one H / PJ-26 76mm caliber gun, two CIWS H / PJ-12 systems (updated to H / PJ-11 from the 17th of series), as well as a 32-silo vertical launch system capable of launching both the HQ-16 anti-aircraft missiles and the ASROC Yu-8.
Since admission to the active service of the 1st vessel in January 2008, 10 years ago, a total of 26 Type 054A frigates have already joined the Chinese naval forces and they are actively conducting offshore missions from Bohai Bay to Gulf of Aden, passing through the western Pacific Ocean, the South China Sea and the Indian Ocean. Today 4 copies are still construction or arrangement at the shipyard Hudong in Shanghai and Huangpu in Guangzhou, and will soon see his successors the Type 054B electric propulsion.

For the moment, the price of the four future Type 054As for the Pakistan Navy is unknown, but the older, smaller F-22Ps each cost about US $ 200 million in Pakistan and the Chinese Navy is acquiring Type 054A at the price of 218 million USD (approximately 187 M €).
At the level of the equipment on board, it is almost certain that all the systems used by the Chinese Navy will be replaced by exportable, potentially demoted or at least modified versions. Thus, the HQ-16 or HQ-16C could leave their place to the LN-80, the H / PJ-11 to the Type 730B, the Yu-8 to the ET80 ... etc, and not to mention the combat systems and sensors .
Despite this, the four new Type 054As are expected to be one of the most important pivots for Pakistan's surface fleets, and could work alongside future S20 submarines of Chinese origin for various missions as well.
For China, the increasing endowment of Chinese military equipment by Pakistan will continue to deepen the political-military relationship between the two countries, and will further consolidate the Chinese position in this crucial part for its maritime silk route. .
To be continued.
