One China? What about One India policy: Sushma Swaraj to Wang Yi

It's learnt that this came up in the context of dealing with sensitive issues during the bilateral conversation between both leaders on Sunday.

Laying down fresh rules of engagement with China, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj made it clear to her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi during his recent visit that while the new BJP government supports Beijing's 'One China' policy, it would also expect China to adopt a 'One India' policy.
It's learnt that this came up in the context of dealing with sensitive issues during the bilateral conversation between both leaders on Sunday. While Wang sought to remind Swaraj about the Vajpayee government's commitment to the One China policy, the External Affairs Minister raised concerns over Chinese military presence in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir and stapled visas for residents of Arunachal Pradesh.
In fact, sources said, Swaraj made this point while summarising the discussion towards the end of their meeting. "Mr Minister, we support the One China policy. However, we expect you to also have a One India policy," said Swaraj and promptly ended the conversation with "xie xie (thank you)", leaving little scope for a counter.
This was for the first time that India has articulated this position at a political level, which by itself is a significant shift as for over a decade New Delhi has always endorsed the 'One China' policy. For Beijing, getting this endorsement from all major countries has been a major diplomatic effort because it inherently negates claims like that of Tibet among others.
The underlying message in Swaraj's remark was clearly pointed at Chinese role in PoK and the constant use of stapled visa as a tool to emphasise dispute, be it in Arunachal Pradesh or earlier in the case of Jammu and Kashmir. India has always protested this practice and for that reason, residents of Arunachal Pradesh are at times not part of many exchange programmes.
Later, Wang sought to justify the Chinese position on stapled visas for Arunachal Pradesh residents as a "gesture out of goodwill and flexibility" claiming that this was meant to facilitate travel for people from these areas. His remarks, sources said, only confirmed that Beijing will maintain a segregated approach to areas it considers disputed in India.
By putting the "One India," idea on the table, insiders said, India was not looking to make this conditional to supporting the "One China" policy but keen to underline that New Delhi, too, has leverage.

India should not agree to One China policy unless China agrees to autonomy for Tibet.

Good to learn GoI has committed to One China since Vaj Payee.

Yet does that One China mantra has any binding force on India, who has been housing a "Tibetan Govmt in Exile" ??

Chinese are not gullible to fall for Indian doublespeak, but would rather deal with India from a position of strength.

Check the UN rules on asylum even though China does not believe in the UN except to sit in the UN SC.

One china policy is not seen in the joint statements of India - China now a days ... a policy shift because of China's actions in POK and recent border incursions..... there is no double speak.

Regarding double speak Chinese should get an award ..... nothing beats them.

Chinese CCP speaks one thing and does one thing.

Hey jacques, what the hell does your stupid question even mean? Stop trying to lend legitimacy to your illegal occupation of Tibet. And act mature instead of pasting useless cartoons in every post.

China is up against a strong willed nationalist leader in Modi...

There will be more surprised for China for sure"¦ China will have more difficulty in dealing with Modi than earlier Congress govt"¦

Honorable Prime Minister of TIBET in exile was present and seated in the front row when Modi was taking oath of office"¦ Honorable PM of TIBET was given the same respect and protocol reserved for any other Prime Ministers and Presidents of head of state"¦

Seek and Ye shall Find.

The Indian Govt is clear. The Tibetan will not disturb the harmony between India and China.

You do realize that when Indian diplomats say such things, they are saying them for the benefit of their domestic electorate. China already has created its facts on the ground along the Sino-Indian border, and it is up to India to either accept and formalize the de facto reality or attempt to alter it by force. Absent a governmental collapse in China, it is unlikely that China will give up an inch of the land it controls.

As for the issue of stapled visas, it's a way to remind India that so long as it claims Aksai Chin, China will not relent on South Tibet.

Finally, someone - preferably an Indian journalist - should ask Lobsang Sangay whether he believes Arunachal is a part of India, or a part of Tibet. It would be interesting to watch him squirm as he tries not to piss off his Indian hosts while maintaining the allegiance of hardline Tibetan exiles.

10 million Tibetans unleashed by India?
Last time I check there are only "300,000" Tibetans living in India and 3 million in China. Where will you find another 6.7 millions? From the grave?

I just point out how a power outage could hamper one's abilitity to reason - imagine how and gruesome irritable to live without AC at temp 35c or abv?

Repeat: Tibetans in India r a headache for India not China. Most of them would stay in Indian "ghetto" endlessly
if failing to transit to the west for a better life! They'd get naturalized as time goes by so let GoI grant them citizenship and a state inside yr state! Many of them would grow up also aspiring for material success rather than Aum Mani Padme Hom. And let black hats yellow hats red hats fight it out on Indian soil without disturbing Chinese!

One China or whatever lip service GoI would do really doesnt matter!

On the bold part... Genius !! The Indian diplomats say what the Indian opinion are they do not need to sway the electorate...

It seems that China is in hurry to settle the border issue more than India... India is also happy with what it controls on the ground and wants Aksai Chin as a final settlement along with TIBET's and Xinjiang [East Turkestan] aspirations and freedom from Chinese...

As for the issue of stapled visas, it's a way to remind India that so long as it claims Aksai Chin, China will not relent on South Tibet.
China should continue to issue stapled visa for Arunachal Pradesh that will ensure that India does not lower its guard against land hungry Fascist regime...

India stood by TIBET at their difficult time we will continue to host them in our land until TIBET is freed from Chinese fascist forces... Leave Arunachal Pradesh to Indian and TIBET we will resolve among ourselves...

If there is at all hardliner in TIBETAN movement, I would suggest them to learn from the freedom fighters from Xinjiang... You need Han blood on the streets of Lhasa and other towns... self evolution does not bring freedom to you... rather killing your oppressor...

Really?

China won't accept any Indian position short of formalizing the status quo.

China hasn't taken an inch from India since 1962. All of China's 14 land borders except for India and Bhutan are settled... land hungry fascists?

India stood by TIBET at their difficult time we will continue to host them in our land until TIBET is freed from Chinese fascist forces... Leave Arunachal Pradesh to Indian and TIBET we will resolve among ourselves...
 India stood by Tibet at their difficult time? You mean 1950, right? 1954? 1959? All Tibet knows is an India that let China do whatever it wanted because China was stronger, but happily subsumed and imprisoned the weaker Himalayan kingdoms such as Sikkim and Bhutan without a second thought.

If there is at all hardliner in TIBETAN movement, I would suggest them to learn from the freedom fighters from Xinjiang... You need Han blood on the streets of Lhasa and other towns... self evolution does not bring freedom to you... rather killing your oppressor...
There was a riot in March 14th, 2008 in Lhasa, during which much Han (and Uighur and Hui) blood was shed. And you know what happened? There was a wave of revulsion among moderate Tibetans that led to the ouster of over 30 lamas advocating violence. This happened concurrently with a wave of over 2500 arrests and twenty executions. This is why Tibetans are self-immolating now - because the new subversive elements believe violence against Han is both repugnant and ineffectual. In due time, they will see that self-immolation is also ineffective, as SIGINT has made the thoughts of most Tibetan business/religious leaders as transparent as glass - ergo, it is impossible to plan the media attention for a self-immolation, which means any memory of the event can be reliably erased before it gets out. What use is it lighting oneself on fire if no one finds out about it?

Yes from the Chinese leaders statement on border issue, Why beg for an early settlement ?... The aggressor wants to settle the issue in a hurry !!

China won't accept any Indian position short of formalizing the status quo.
Nor will India... We will continue to fight for what we think is ours...

China hasn't taken an inch from India since 1962. All of China's 14 land borders except for India and Bhutan are settled... land hungry fascists?
Aksai Chin is India's... give it back so do the illegally transferred land in Pakistan's occupied Kashmir in 1963 to China...

Laughable... See the hate rate of people of Tamang for China...

There can not be any freedom of TIBET with out blood bath ... Xinjiang understood it well now.... It is high time TIBET put same practice in place...
