Subsonic missile 'Nirbhay' test fired
Balasore: India on Tuesday test fired the newly developed country's first subsonic cruise missile Nirbhay (Fearless) from launch pad no.3 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea.
The missile has an operational strike range of 1000 km and at flight, it is capable of delivering 24 different types of warheads. The six meter long 'Nirbhay' missile has a launch weight of about 1,500 kg. It can carry a payload of 450 kilograms and soar to a minimum of 10 km and a maximum of 50 km.
'Nirbhay, which looks like an aircraft, can drop bombs. It can be remotely controlled and brought back. In this mission, there are no plans to recover it or use it to drop bombs.
The missile 'Nirbhay' which has been jointly developed by Hyderabad based Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) and Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) would be inducted into the three services - Army, Navy and Air force.
