@abingdonboy Main reason for replacing INSAS 5.56*45mm is up-gunning calibre to 7.62*51mm is "Hit to kill" & out-gunning enemy/matching in "Range". What happened do that?

This whole saga shows what a bunch of myopic morons run the IA- at best

Only now are they thinking what’s most cost effective, supply chain resilient and sensible from a training point of view.

Normally it’s endless RFIs for foreign toys

it took them 20 years to think of this? Actual retardation. Despite veterans clearly stating their disdain for ISNAS. It’s absolutely pathetic what the IA is run by. No words for such a rotten organization.

I don’t really understand this part and it’s not properly explained in the article. The AKs are 7.62X39 so what’s the talk of the 7.62NATO? Clearly
More Sigs are not an option for whatever reason and this news is coming because the AK-203 deal is in trouble due to the Ukraine conflict

So are they going to re-chamber the INSAS? There’s already a 7.62NATO version (R2) of INSAS so I suppose the components exist? But then the article seems to suggest they’ll just be doing a furniture update of the INSASs

Most issues with INSAS come from experiences with the early versions, since then many iterations have taken place- I doubt any veteran has even held the MK1C version as the IA stopped inducting INSAS beyond the 1B1 (a 15 year old model) and instead went shopping for foreign toys

if IA had been committed to INSAS from the start instead of trying to ditch it pretty much from day 1 and had actually worked with industry to come up with engineering solutions as well as functionality updates this whole mess could’ve been avoided, every large nation on earth has their general grunts with a cheap indigenous rifle, India apparently is unable to do that according to the IA.

Is SSS making 7.62x51 mm ammunition for Indian Army now?

The ammunition is being manufactured by the SSS Defence at its factory in Andhra Pradesh.

The company has a joint venture for production of ammunition in India with Brazilian firm CBC Defense, the world’s second largest producer of military ammunition.

CBC has been a supplier to the Indian armed forces and has a contract going on for small caliber supplies to the Indian Army as well.

QC problems would have been solved very quickly if the design was handed over to pvt industry instead of OFB. There is a parallel story as to how the UK army hated the initial versions of the SA80 rifle, but they were forced to stick with it and after continuously improving it, its more or less good enough now (not perfect).

Indian army will never get rid of old hardware that is still in usable state. No matter if they are outdated or not. F-INSAS exists for this reason. They will not throw out old gear and buy everything new to replace the outdated bulky crap. Why ? simple, NATO forces treat their soldiers like pro athletes, we treat our soldiers like laborers and handymen. Difference in mindset won't be cured with big budgets. Army provides as much to each soldier as the army thinks each soldier "deserves".
Well, to be fair, manpower does happen to be the most abundant resource available to us, so....

GENTLEMEN We're in trouble, our foreign rifle deals are stuck. We need modern rifles now and today.

Sir, we could go to the Indian private industry making AR-15 rifles, trial and order, kit them out with furniture.

Are you crazy ? No more imports are going to happen if we buy these and they do well in the field.

Sir, we have old INSAS rifles gathering dust, how about we take FAB kits and dress them up, I'm sure the gun's inherent flaws and subpar make will disappear as soon as we dress them up.

Outstanding soldier. Make it happen.

This British era firangis practices, thought process is rampant in most Indian organisation and institution eg being railway, police judge (they call themself lord) etc .
ideally leaders should have burnt (if only Bose would have win)all British era organisation and institution but over times these things have become more wrong.
An officer needs to show he is an officer, different from filthy NCOs. They must maintain the shine on their boots. Peak British colonial legacy hangover running in forces.
