interesting shot [see below] with dual aphid stores , possibly a secondary air to air mission ? in some sense mig23bn is similar to mirage V , a fighter lineage but customized for air to ground missions but still having decent performance in the WVR realm

Mig-23 is a very nice plane. I like it from Childhood. Mig-23s also had skirmishes with PAF F-16s during the Soviet Afghan war. The Soviets also said that during that time, they shot an F-16 using their Mig-23s. The Soviet pilots used Mig-23MLD in shooting down that F-16 but PAF covered up the loss and said that they didn't lose any F-16s that day in any way and after that later Accepted that they lost an F-16 to Friendly fire

-{I am pretty sure that it was shot down by a Mig-23-

Soviet Airforce used MiG-23s over Afghanistan, often being used to escort missions close to the borders of Pakistan and Iran, as the then in service MiG-21 lacked the necessary range to do so. You can compare the range of both the Aircrafts and you will understand.

MiG-27 was designed by Mikoyan Design Bureau in the Soviet union and produced there. The reason that it has that Name "Bahadur" is that HAL had got a license from the Soviets to produce these in India itself and hence it got the name "Bahadur".

Here I will explain in more detail : In 1982, HAL entered into an agreement with USSR and started production of MiG-27M aircraft as a follow on project for MiG-21 BIS at Nasik Division of the Company. During the year 1983, the Korwa Division of HAL in District Sultanpur (U.P.) was established for manufacture of Various systems of the MIG-27M, here let me name some of them:
  • Inertial Navigation System (INS)
  • head Up Display
  • Weapon Aiming Computer (HUDWAC)
  • Combined Map and Electronics Display (COMED), Laser Ranger and Marked Target Seeker(LRMTS)
  • Auto Stabiliser and Flight Data Recorder for Jaguar and similar advanced systems
for MiG-27M were all produced in India by HAL. And hence the name "Bahadur".

MIG-27 played a major role during the 1999 Kargil war against Pakistan. MIG-21, MIG-23 and MIG-27s were used in Kargil war. Because if this, it was called as "Bahadur".

On 27th May 1999, during the Kargil War, 1 IAF MiG-27L had suffered an engine flameout while firing 80 mm rockets, possibly due to a MANPADS hit. This Particular IAF MIG-27L was pilote by pilot, Kambampati Nachiketa, who had later ejected and was captured by Pakistani forces.

Sril lanka, Ukraine, India all had retired Their MIG-27s but as of today, Kazakhstan still operates 12 units of MIG-27Ms.

Optical windows of the laser-television sighting system Kayra-23 MiG-27K (kayra [кайра] is Russian for guillemot). Bottom box under the TV channel with a laser rangefinder-laser designator, the top receiver for a laser rangefinder.
