Nurpur, December 26

After a brief lull, drug trafficking has witnessed a massive spurt in the border villages of Nurpur and Indora subdivisions in Kangra district. Unlike opium and poppy husk, preferred by addicts in the past, chitta, a synthetic intoxicant, has become the ‘’drug of choice’’ for youngsters. Young girls are also falling prey to drug peddlers, which has become a concern for concern in the rural areas of the Indora police jurisdiction.

A video clip showing conversation among young girls and elderly men has gone viral in the region. In the video, the girls have named a number of well-known drug peddlers from whom they purchase synthetic drugs, especially chitta, on credit.

According to local residents, anti-drug awareness campaign have failed to yield any result in the region. The Kangra district police, headed by the then SP Sanjiv Gandhi, had formed a special task force in September last year to keep a check on drug peddlers in the lower areas of the district. It was headed by the Nurpur DSP. A number of drug peddlers were arrested.

The force had succeeded in containing the menace. However, with the transfer of Sanjiv Gandhi, drug peddlers in the border areas of lower Kangra district have become active once again. Awareness drives being launched by the police have failed to yield any result.
