There are no permanent friends only interests. Iran as an independent nation have their own. For a pro-Indian country, their Ayatollah has been very vocal in spouting off nonsense about Kashmir, mind you sunni Kashmiris who ideologically loath them. Iran is not completely anti-Pakistan. They've often sided with Napakis over Kashmir in international fora, the recent OIC resolution is but one example.
We can co-opt Iran in the venture, but we cannot assume that they'll be fully on board and forever at that. Regarding the northern distribution network, the issues are same- we'll first have to ship our stuff to Russia and then transport them to Afghanistan.
Maybe both approaches are pragmatic, but how does co-opting others ensure an isolated base? We are still dependent on others to supply our needs and that gives them strong leverage over us.
Plus, the biggest question of all. What is the biggest leverage of having a division strength of troops in Afghanistan?
Is it denying Napakis strategic depth?
Is it co-ordinating a pincer attack on Napakis from both sides?
Is it preventing Afghanistan from falling to Taliban again?
