There are no permanent friends only interests. Iran as an independent nation have their own. For a pro-Indian country, their Ayatollah has been very vocal in spouting off nonsense about Kashmir, mind you sunni Kashmiris who ideologically loath them. Iran is not completely anti-Pakistan. They've often sided with Napakis over Kashmir in international fora, the recent OIC resolution is but one example.

We can co-opt Iran in the venture, but we cannot assume that they'll be fully on board and forever at that. Regarding the northern distribution network, the issues are same- we'll first have to ship our stuff to Russia and then transport them to Afghanistan.

Maybe both approaches are pragmatic, but how does co-opting others ensure an isolated base? We are still dependent on others to supply our needs and that gives them strong leverage over us.

Plus, the biggest question of all. What is the biggest leverage of having a division strength of troops in Afghanistan?
Is it denying Napakis strategic depth?
Is it co-ordinating a pincer attack on Napakis from both sides?
Is it preventing Afghanistan from falling to Taliban again?

Reading options

A thought popped up in my mind that India used to have a transport sqdn stationed in Ayni air force base in tajakistan. Is it in use at present too. If yes it is right time to upgrade the facilities there and also station full squadron of fighters. It will be another pressure point for paki that India can hit them in the rear too. May be we can overlook china too from there...
Not without Russian's permission. If Russia has given that permission, then it would mean that they have taken a side against China. At the most we can push is a few covert operatives or push some supplies.

Good post, well articulated.

My personal desire is for India to be a soft colonist like China and cultivate so much dependence that Ayatollah be damned there is no way they can go against us. Can Pakis go against China?

As for using the Russian lines, not everything has to be transported to Russia first and then to Afghanistan. They supply a major chunk of our ammo and can supply coal and water. Win/win for us.

Of course the base cannot be completely isolated but it can be relatively so in terms of actual boots on the ground firing weapons against the Taliban. We can keep our military footprint outside the base low.

As for objectives, yes to all the above but primarily force the Pakistanis to reinforce their border with Afghanistan drawing away resources from the Kashmir front.

Pakis keep mentioning the 2 front war to us, time to repay them in their own coin.

So OIC just said something about Kashmir which isn't in our favour, what should we do about them?

Nothing!

We should read there actions . If we are to be a great global power we need not be bothered about political rhetorics.

Important thing is Saudi giving national honor to modi .

NIA probe unearths how Pakistan-based groups use WhatsApp to fuel terror in Kashmir

NEW DELHI: NIA, while analysing social media activity of “habitual” Kashmiri stone-pelters as part of its J&K terror funding probe, found at least 28 WhatsApp groups whose creators, administrators and some members are based in Pakistan and include identified cadres of terror outfit Jamaat-ud-Dawah.

Sources in NIA on Tuesday told TOI that the WhatsApp groups together have 5,000 members, of which majority are local Kashmiris but a significant number are linked to Pakistani mobi ..

Looks like the pakis is trying to do some psychological warfare learnt from their chini masters. there is no way in hell that pakis can get hold of a serving colnel in Indian army posted on behalf of RAW in afghanistan. I mean he has layers of security. he is not some retired naval officer settled in Iran who you can kidnap. Colnel will not wander on the streets of Kabul alone.

Also during kidnapping he was doing twitter on his mobile phone with the 5G wifi connection in afghanistan:bounce::bounce::rofl::rofl:
could have been killed in resent kabul blast.......

it was surely not due to indian concern , there has been a wide outcry in srilanka on increasing influence of china , specially after govt grant them huge land......
That's b'coz Sri Lanka is already under a huge debt burden from the chinese. Sri Lankans have to accept certain demands from the chinese. But for whatever reason, its good that they denied permission to berth warships.

Actually they do. They are very sensitive to developments in Western Afghanistan, especially in and around Herat, because It impacts the
a. Security and;
b. Water resources

of their bordering regions.

Not to mention, they need local Shias, Hazras to be well established and safe in that area to provide them a buffer against Sunni expansionism.

Iran was a big player during the Northern Alliance era.
What I have read so far about Iran especially from Iranians themselves is that they hate Afghans and would never like them entering their borders. They don't care what goes in Afghanistan but what spills out. For good money they won't mind tanks being transported; logistics, medicines and maggi noodles won't even get a dog's sniff.

If may also add the notion 'Iranian Sensitivities' is invented by Congress-I who do not want to do anything to cater Pakistani sensitivities. Its like speaking for Iran when they haven't said anything explicitly. If Americans would have played better they were happy to even let NATO pass through.

Once again, I ask you to offer solid tangible solutions.

Let's look at the electricity option first- Solar is a good option, relatively isolated and provide enough power, maybe wind as well. But will it be enough to fully run a base? Not sure. Coal will have the same issues with other logistics- how to transport immense amounts of coal to the power plant? Defeats the whole purpose of isolationism doesn't it? And what to do about water? And this is the just the beginning.

Iran may not be a friend of Pakistan, but they have interests in Afghanistan and Indian military presence in Afghanistan doesn't benefit Iranians either. They'll NEVER allow arms and ammunition to be transported through their country. They were extremely reluctant to allow TNT/Dynamite to transit through their area, when we were building the Salma dam. In the end they did not, we had to get them from elsewhere.

We have been trying to bring them on board for years and years and Chabahar is yet to be fully functional and running. Iranians always bring in one obstacle or another.

Having a will is fine, but the will must be pragmatic. I can will that I'll fly to Jupiter to see Sabu and his family, but is it pragmatic?
Indians suck when it comes to dolling out money. A donkey full of Gold can do wonders. Rest of the excuses are just built around to hide their inability to negotiate.

Taiwan Will ‘Not Back Down,’ Vows to Defend Itself Against China.

The Taiwanese Defense Ministry has bared their teeth, promising that they are ready to defend their island from mainland China aggression if need be. This comes in the wake of a new exchange of provocations and saber rattling between the two.

China sailed their sole active aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, into the air defense identification zone around Taiwan's capital city of Taipei.
