Thats not how u would want to build things quickly and we want to build mk2 quickly.
Im sure u have heard of components that have long build times that need to be ordered much before u start building a prototype...can't have that with piecemeal funds.
Besides all that mk2 will mostly have modified version of proven tech from lca program..so much less risky any modifications req can be done on the go like kfx ...beancounting funds will get u programs delayed by decades
Are you even aware that the funds for initial prototypes has been sanctioned way back before 2015 and the most expensive part with the longest lead time - the engines has already reached Bangalore during 2016? It is the same funds that are being used with HAL. Remaining funds will come as the work progress. Nobody is beancounting here. The standard way any program is funded is followed. Initially the prototypes and as things progress, funds will follow

LCA doing R-73 testing.

You can observe both Russian and French inheritance in that HUD, which makes sense because majority of the pilots fly on either Russian or French equipment. (for comparison, Greek Mirage and Russian Su-35, respectively.)

A couple of interesting things:

This has to be the aerial target range. Currently target is at 2.3 nautical miles(4.2km) - we're using nautical miles, since you can see the waypoint marker in the lower right side say 000°/7.1NM(7.1 nautical miles to waypoint on a heading of 000°).

This is interesting, because the max radar range is 196 nautical miles, if I am correct -- that is equal to a range of 363km..

Comparatively the F-16 radar has a range of about 160 nautical miles(296km). Does this mean that this radar is an AESA..?

No idea what this thing in the middle means, though. Any guesses?

Litening Pod(Israeli - Rafael), used by LCA Tejas.

Images are 5 seconds apart(16:50:07 vs 16:50:12)

Also getting a look into the LCA avionics:

FPL = Flight Plan page, perhaps.

HSI = Tejas' Horizontal situation indicator(contains data about friendlies, enemies etc, and datalink contacts etc.)

here's a F-16 HSI for comparison:

A/C = Aircraft health report system, it seems

I don't know what BREAK means here. For reference, here is a LITENING(American - Lockheed Martin) pod for comparison:

And here's also a SNIPER(American) pod, on a F-16:

Notice the lack of a North-pointing symbology in the Litening. As for quality, I am pretty sure both have almost the same quality - the fuzziness in the Litening's images comes from the fact that the source I pulled it out from was uploaded in 360p only.

The T on the Tejas' Litening can also meaning the laser is in TRAINING mode, instead of COMBAT. Training mode lasers have lesser power output and don't broadcast as aggressively as lasers in combat mode, to avoid injury and generally spend less power.

10 minute time limit ran out. Here's a better picture of the HSI(Mk1A).

If this software is home built, what else can I say except that these Indian madlads made it amazing. It is absolutely clutter free IMO, and would project the flight plan, own aircraft, friendly aircraft, enemy aircraft, datalink contacts amazingly from what I understand

Great video, explains the Mk1A cockpit. Sometimes you can understand the quality of the aircraft just by looking at the efforts that went into developing the avionics of the plane.. all the world class aircraft have avionics that look great and perform great. With this I think Indian military aviation has matured to world standards.

So a major joint AF exercise is going to take place in Australia and the Imported Airforce is taking 4 Su-30MKIs, and no Tejas...
Arreh bhai - Tejas is just getting into service life. Let the TACDE guys get their hands on it - develop good doctrine for it (which is happening as of this year) then the IAF can send them to joint exercises. Otherwise no point.

the entire avionics package is indeed home built. Speaking as someone who works now in that sector, our engineers are no less than what the West has. Indeed, half their engineers are Indians only.

but tbh, we did have a lot of help in this sector - software, avionics and control laws from the Americans and Swedes before the Pokhran days - and that help was genuinely useful.

First version of the Tejas CLAWs did fly on a LM F16 testbed after all.

India bids to sell fighter jets to Malaysia, says six other countries interested
India has offered to sell 18 light-combat aircraft (LCA) “Tejas” to Malaysia, the defence ministry said on Friday, adding that Argentina, Australia, Egypt, the United States, Indonesia, and the Philippines were also interested in the single-engine jet.

The Indian government last year gave a $6 billion contract to state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd for 83 of the locally produced Tejas jets for delivery starting around 2023 – four decades after it was first approved in 1983.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, keen to reduce India’s reliance on foreign defence equipment, has also been making diplomatic efforts to export the jets. The Tejas has been beset by design and other challenges, and was once rejected by the Indian Navy as too heavy.

The defence ministry told parliament that Hindustan Aeronautics in October last year responded to a request for proposal from the Royal Malaysian Air Force for 18 jets, offering to sell the two-seater variant of Tejas.

“Other countries which have evinced interest in the LCA aircraft are: Argentina, Australia, Egypt, USA, Indonesia, and Philippines,” India’s junior defence minister, Ajay Bhatt, told members of parliament in a written reply.

He said the country was also working on manufacturing a stealth fighter jet, but declined to given a timeline citing national security concerns.

Britain said in April it would support India’s goal of building its own fighter jets. India currently has a mix of Russian, British and French fighter jets.

India is looking to ground all its Soviet-era Russian fighter jets, the MiG-21, by 2025, following a number of fatal crashes, the Times of India daily reported last month.

It’s a real shame Ex Cobra warrior was cancelled by the RAF earlier this year , they were going to send 5(?) LCA for that. That would’ve been an epic spectacle and proving ground for the type.

It is the LCA SPORT.

But thankfully this is a HAL project, just like the Tejas Mk1A was.

The Tejas trainer already exists, HAL will not be meddling with it's airframe. What they will do now is add the LAD, reconfigurable cockpit displays feature, and other features from Hawk-i such as Speech Recognition for pilot commands, etc. I'm pretty certain that given it's a full HAL program with no major ADA involvement, it'll see the light of day pretty fast, just as the Tejas Mk1A has.
I wouldn’t be that surprised to learn it was a clean sheet design. Why would they change the label of SPORT and claim it a new product?

a delta planform is intrinsically less suitable for training purposes (even with a highly advanced FCS that attempts to prevent a loss of control) than a more conventional swept wing. Look at the competitions that HAL is putting the SPORT into (US, Aus and RMAF) and what it’s going up against in those competitions, the LCA does stand out being a high performance supersonic fighter.

Malaysia Shortlists Tejas Under Acquisition Programme; US, Australia Among 6 Countries Interested
The US, Australia, Indonesia and the Philippines are among six countries, which have shown interest in India’s Tejas aircraft while Malaysia has already shortlisted the jet under its acquisition programme, the government said on Friday. The other two countries that have evinced interest in the aircraft are Argentina and Egypt, according to minister of state for defence Ajay Bhatt.

Tejas, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments. In February last year, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Replying to a question in Lok Sabha on Tejas, Bhatt said the HAL responded to a Request for Information (RFI) or initial tender received from Royal Malaysian Air Force in February 2019. Subsequently, the HAL responded in October 2021 to a Request For Proposal (RFP) issued by Malaysia for 18 aircraft, adding the twin-seater variant of the Tejas was offered.

Malaysia is procuring the aircraft to replace its ageing fleet of Russian MiG-29 fighter planes. The number of aircraft that Malaysia is looking at procuring is not immediately clear. “Other countries which have evinced interest in LCA aircraft are Argentina, Australia, Egypt, USA, Indonesia, and the Philippines," he said.
