We get the first squadron of Tejas. Now HAL ahould increase production rate. And it must be 24 per year.

No issue in doing that BUT they can’t do
It unless there are serious orders made. 83 jets at 24/year production rate is just over 3 years, there’s no sense in ramping up production beyond 16/year if such measly orders are going to be made.

Time for IAF to put their money where their mouth is, HAL/ADA have delivered, if the IAF really is facing a fighter shortage then they should
Be ordering LCA by the hundreds.

12 have been handed over to be IAF, the other 4 will all be with 45 SQN within the next 6 weeks. Main thing is all 16 flew before March 31st 2019, now it’s just a matter of procedure/hand over process.
The only thing we know for sure is that 16 air-frames have achieved IOC and that at the beginning of the year only 9 had been inducted into IAF. The proofs I need are...

1) How many aircraft inducted into IAF as of today.
2) How long had the 7 air-frames that were not turned over been started by HAL, months or years ago?

I suspect those 7 airframes had been in unfinished states for a long time and that no revolution in HAL production schedule has really happened. According to the article I posted only 1 had been inducted since the start of the year.

^^ Don't know where this is going. SP-9/10 are participating in LIMA; That is what I hear on BRF. So atleast 10 are with IAF currently. We can only track first flight of respective SP's. I don't think anyone has tracked dates IAF takes over respective SP's.

Also, I don't think there is lapse of more than 2 months between first flight and handing over to IAF. Following are the dates of first flight of respective SP's:

What about SP-17 to SP-20? ..Weren't those supposed to be FOC variant too?

Nope. They are trainers for which the DAL and SOP documents haven't yet been submitted by Adato HAL. Once they are submitted, HAL can place orders and then start assembly. We will get FOC series jets first. Trainers SP-17 SP-18 SP-19 and 20 will start arriving from the secondhalf of next year.

And they are saying .they will produce more 8 this year....
HAL said SP-21 will roll out by October this year... The 16 FOC fighters will be delivered by 2019-2021 fiscal years, meaning 8(+) fighters per year, like 2018-19.

Meaning 2 more in October/November & 2 more in November/December 2019, i think.

Question 1:

Don't know about pace but yes 17-20 and 37-40 are trainers... Which will be delivered after sp36 is completed
Also I heard that HAL is increasing its production to 16 this year

The Indian Air Force’s (IAF) No 45 Squadron, Flying Daggers, based at AFS Sulur has so far 12 Tejas ...

SP-14 completed CAF waiting for delivery. SP-13 has 1 CAF left. SP-15 SP-16 under post-production test flights(when this article was being written).

The best way to increase Tejas production is to order 60-80 LIFT trainer versions while MK-1A and MK-2 get ready, god knows we need in Lead in super sonic fighter trainers, 1 sqd for IN, 3 for IAF. This way we can double production to at least 32-36. Some of these LIFTs could then also be used for VIP flights, customer flights, Surya Kiran aerobatic team etc.

Didn't know the Germans's offered to buy a few Tejas trainer variants in exchange for buying the EF (if true), wonder why this wasn't taken up seriously. This would have been a fair exchange, 2-3 sqd of Tejas LIFT for export that too with the Luftwaffe would have been a great start for the Tejas program.

It is far too expensive to compete in the AJT segment in both acquisition and maintenance cost.

AJT segment is mostly transonic aircraft that don't really have higher super sonic speeds or performance. Also the Tejas LIFT would carry more payload, fuel etc which is better for training needs. Besides if Germany would buy 2-3 of SQDs for us buying the EF, why the heck not. Having a high profile export client is boon for the Tejas program and would only allow for increase in interest and would allow for better production rates. As far as I am concern bot EF and Rafale cleared MRCA trials, they are both fit for service in the IAF.

Hi, I have a basic doubt regarding the max speed of Tejas - Different forums say it's 1.6 Mach or 1.8 Mach.. Which is the correct one? Was this a requirement for upgradation as far as FOC was concerned? As Tejas was essentially conceived as a point defence fighter to replace Mig-21, will this lower speed be a disadvantage to it vis-à-vis F-16 whose max speed is around Mach 2?

It doesn't really matter unless you are evading a missile. You can't launch going that fast so you have to slow down to engage.

It doesn't really matter how much better of an aircraft it is. When it will cost 3X as much as an M-346 no one would even look at it. Trainers don't need high payload, fuel ect... it is a trainer, not a combat aircraft. It is a very limited niche and the reason France decided to stop making AJTs.

Maye that's the reason they came up with the SPORT concept AJT based on Tejas...
