ACS space simulator delivered to the ISRO Satellite Centre in Bangalore, named HVT400MC, is one of the two largest space simulators existing in Asia and the most technologically advanced in the world.


The simulator consists in a stainless steel structure that encases the area in which the tests are conducted, a cylindrically shaped chamber 7 m in diameter and 11 m long.The system is fitted with 4 cryogenic pumps that generate the high vacuum required with a pumping capacity of 60.000 L/sec each.


Temperatures inside the cryogenic pumps drop to 10° Kelvin, corresponding to -263°C, through the use of helium, while the vacuum value reached is 10-7 mbar.The thermal system includes 15 independent circuits capable of reproducing the conditions that surround satellites when in space. The circuits gradually reproduce the entire range of temperatures experienced in space, from those on the side that is lit by the sun to those on the dark side, namely from -180°C to +180°C. Cooling is provided by liquid nitrogen stored in 4 large containers (22 meters tall) that can stock up to 500,000 liters of nitrogen.

The space simulator is run and supervised by a control and management system consisting of an array of over 40 electric panels for the distribution of power and for the control of the systems with PLC logic, data acquisition racks (almost 800 temperatures), SW for overall system monitoring, topped by synoptics and redundant systems. All of this is distributed over a control console consisting of 5 PCs as well as another 12 stations distributed on two floors and interconnected via intranet. The system also allows for data exchange via optic fiber cable with the satellite’s control system.

Great to see this system.
Would be fantastic if the can add particle beams and micro meteorite simulations too in that chamber

Training of Gaganyaan astronauts in Russia put on hold due to lockdown

The training of Gaganyaan's four prospective astronauts in Russia has been put on hold as the facility where the exercise is being undertaken has been temporarily shut in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, sources said on Monday.

The four test pilots of the Indian Air Force, chosen for India's first manned mission to space, have been undergoing training at the Yu.A. Gagarin Research and Test Cosmonaut Training Centre near Moscow since February.

One session concerns the training of ground teams in France at CADMOS/CNES, the operational centre specialised in space operations for manned spaceflights and microgravity research, and another one for training crew surgeons, which was planned to take place in ESA European Astronauts Centre in Germany.


“To progress quickly, the teams are currently evaluating the possibility to organise these training sessions remotely. In parallel, they keep on building the other parts of the cooperation such as a possible support to provide access to spatialised equipment,” the official added.

ISRO and CNES have an agreement to train Indian flight surgeons. The four prospective astronauts are also likely to go to France which has a well-established mechanism for space medicine.

It has the MEDES space clinic, a subsidiary of CNES, where space surgeons undergo training.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has also been hit by the coronavirus. One, the work on all the centers of ISRO has been reduced due to the lockdown. After this, Corona has also attacked ISRO's budget. The government has made major cuts in the budget of the first quarter (April to June) of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the fiscal year 2020-21.

It is difficult to say how much will be affected by ISRO's functioning due to this deduction. But due to lockdown and limited access to money, many projects of ISRO can be delayed. That is, many missions will be delayed this year. Or they can also be postponed till next year. The Budget Division of the Department of Economic Affairs, under the Ministry of Finance, has issued an office memorandum to the Department of Space that 15 percent reduction is being done in the first quarter of your current financial year 2020-21. You have to run your expenses according to the instructions given.

LPSC/ISRO Plasma Thruster Project completed(2016).


Electric propulsion are under investigation as a technology aiming to achieve thrust with high exhaust velocities in satellites, this results in a reduction in the amount of propellant required for a given space mission or application compared to other conventional propulsion methods. Hall Effect Thrusters already been installed and used in satellites due to their longer stability and reproducible thrust efficiency.


Choice of anode liner material, magnetic field configuration and over all material properties of all components used in the thruster is crucial for the long stable operation of the thrusters. The propellant gas is basically ionised and ions are accelerated in electric propulsion to produce the thrust. Ceramic wall erosion due to ion induced sputtering is a life-limiting mechanism in Plasma Hall Effect thrusters used in satellites.

Owing to relatively long lifetimes of thruster devices, effects of sputter erosion of thrusters ceramic and its deposition on sensitive equipment such as spacecraft solar cell are under investigation . Due to the lower sputtering yield Boron Nitride (BN) is used as ceramic material in plasma thrusters.

The current research work was focused to investigate the erosion behaviour of the anode liner materials at various ion energies and angle of incidence, change in magnetic permeability of the material at elevated temperature, change in magnetic field topology of the magnetic circuit at elevated temperatures and surface flash over effects.


For conducting such experiments first time in India, two in-situ facilities were developed at FCIPT/IPR equipped with ion sources, Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sen¬sors, fast magnetic probes and data acquisition systems. Such studies were found to be very beneficial for ISRO ‘s ongoing Plasma Thruster Program.

Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has initiated manned mission program to achieve in-house human space flight capability. Towards this, Crew Module (CM) and Service Module (SM) are proposed to carry crew to orbit and return them safely back to a pre-determined location. CM serves as the habitat of crew and SM caters for life support and propulsion requirements during ascent and on-orbit phases of the mission. A umbilical system is proposed to facilitate fluid and electrical interconnection betweenCMand SMtill the time ofCM-SM separation. The CM is located above SMand umbilical system interconnects CM-SMfrom outside the CM-SM structure CM has ablative liner as heat shield for combating heat during re-entry. As CM re-enters atmosphere facing bottom, the umbilical lines cannot be routed through the bottom without affecting the heatshield. The only alternative available is to route the lines outside).

The proposed umbilical system consists of Umbilical Plate sub-assembly, Boom, and Actuator. Umbilical plate sub-assembly, which houses fluid/electrical connectors, consists of two plates in mated condition during operation. One plate is mounted on the fore-end of the actuatable boom and other half is fixed to CM. The fluid/electrical lines are routed from SM to CM though the boom structure. The boom is a rigid arm with planar rotational degree of freedom about the fixed mounting point located at SM fore-end. The actuator provides the necessary force for separation of umbilical system from CM prior to separation of SM during abort and descent phase (around 120 km altitude) of the mission.
