Naval LCA MK-2 will be ready before INS Vikrant goes to Sea trials:

According to sources close to idrw.org, Naval LCA MK-2 will be ready before INS Vikrant Goes to sea trials somewhere around end of 2016, with launch of INS Vikrant, there is considerable amount of pressure of ADA and HAL to deliver Naval LCA MK-2 by the time INS Vikrant is ready for sea trials.

Naval LCA MK-2 according to sources will likely have its first flight by end of 2015 or mid 2016 and will be ready to carry out landing on decks of INS Vikrant by 2017; Navy has requirements for 46 MK-2 aircrafts which will be powered by General Electric's F414-GE-INS6 engine with 98 kN of thrust and refined aerodynamics. INS Vikrant has been designed with a separate aircraft lift and maintenance facilities for the LCA, in addition to facilities for the MiG-29K.

Navy already has placed orders for 6 Naval LCA MK-1 which will be used to carry out testing on its shore-based test facility which has come up at INS Hansa Naval base in Goa. SBTF in Goa replicates an aircraft carrier deck on ground, complete with arrested recovery and a ski jump for takeoff. This facility, which is expected to be operational by end of 2013, will be used for certifying Naval LCA Pilots before actually flying off an aircraft carrier. Naval LCA MK-1 will also be used for pilot training and for training maintenance crews.

The LCA Navy NP-1, which has been grounded for one year now, after just four flights which started in April last year, could take to the skies again later this year after major modification to its landing gear, NP2 which is a Single-seat variant is already under construction and will be ready for first flight after NP-1 is back in air. There has been considerable amount of delays in building NP-2 since landing gear changes involved significant amount of re-engineering but NP2 will feature fully redesigned landing gear and other changes before its first flight.

China will probably launch 3 carriers together probably within 24 months. The work would have started already. They have the scale to launch 3 together and they know they have to keep a quantitative superiority to India and the fact that they have to challenge the US going forward.

The INS Vikrant: Know all about the carrier

Why is the Vikrant important?

It is India's first ever indigenous aircraft carrier, and signifies a degree of self-reliance in this field. Currently under construction in Kochi, it will be the largest ever warship built in India. It will make the country the fifth that is capable of constructing aircraft carriers this size, the others being the US, Russia, France and the UK. (AP)

========================

Since when has the project been planned?

As per the original plan, work was to start in 2008 and the ship expected to join service by 2014. (PTI)

=========================

What is the ceremony in Kochi about?

August 12function was the launching ceremony. What this means is that the structure, fabricated in a dry dock, has been floated out into the sea and anchored next to the yard. (AP)

==========================

What comes next?

Work will now start to add on the bridge aboard the flight deck, as well as extend the ship's breadth outside the confines of the dock. Extensive cabling and integration of all systems remain. Over 75 per cent of the structure has been erected, and the engines and generators housed inside their compartments. (Reuters)

==========================

When will the ship be inducted?

As per current plans, the ship should be ready to steam under its own power and go for the first round of trials by 2016-end. The ship is expected to be fit for formal induction in the Navy by the end of 2018. (PTI)

==========================

What are the ship's capabilities?

The 37,500-tonne carrier has been designed to attain speeds in excess of 28 knots, and to carry 36 aircraft, 17 in the hangars and 19 on deck. It is designed to sail for over 8,000 nautical miles in a service period over three decades. Its main weapon will be its fighter aircraft. (PTI)

==========================

What fighters will it carry?

A mix of MiG 29 Ks and later Light Combat Aircraft (Naval), besides KA 31 early warning and anti-submarine choppers and Advanced Light Helicopters for utility missions. It will be protected against air attacks by the long-range surface-to-air missile system being developed with Israel and will have AK 630 close-in-weapon systems. (PTI)

==========================

How does it compare with other ships?

It is larger than India's sole serving carrier, the INS Virat that weights 28,000 tonnes and can carry less than 30 aircraft. The Vikrant will be the fourth carrier to be operated by India when it joins in 2018.Defence Minister A K Antony with his wife Elizabeth at Cochin dockyard during the launch of INS Vikrant. (PTI)

Why is Uk always put into this elite group of nations? They have been making 27000 Tons carrier approx. And if Uk is put here, then why not Italy and Spain who have also constructed similar sized Carrier?

Those havnt even been launched yet. And when the first one is launched THEN Uk will enter the selected group of nations which includes US,France,Russia,INDIA.

Even in case of SLBMs(when India inducted K-15) i see Uk's name even though they have developed none on their own and use America's Trident
Technically even russia has not built a carrier. The shipyards of the erstwhile USSR which built carriers are now in ukraine.Sevmash just retrofitted Gorshkov.

Because of this, 53,950 tons full load by the 1970s, which qualifies them for the list of 5 nations who've actually constructed ships capable of operating conventional, fixed-wing jets... and amongst only 3 who've managed to build CATOBAR boats.

As Pakistan Falls apart, India launches its first home made Air Craft Carrier

BEIJING: The launch of INS Vikrant has raised hackles in China, with Chinese defence experts saying the aircraft carrier would have great significance for India as it would allow the Indian Navy to wade into the Pacific Ocean - which Beijing considers as its backyard. It is also a reminder to Pakistan, which is fighting insurgencies and its people who are upset with their own army for corruption and waging wars on its citizens, and is practically breaking apart, economically and strategically.
"This bears great significance to Indian Navy. It makes India only the fifth country after the US, Russia, Britain and France to have such capabilities," senior captain Zhang Junshe, vice-president of China's Naval Research Institute, told the state-run CCTV on Monday. The Indian Navy will have lead over China as it will have two aircraft carriers by the end of this year with INS Vikramaditya, the refitted carrier from Russia joining INS Viraat, which is already in service even though Vikrant was expected to be operational by 2018, he said.
"Which means by the end of this year India will become the only country in Asia to have two aircraft carriers. This will enhance the overall capabilities especially the power projection capabilities of the Indian Navy," Zhang said.

Ruling out any race for more carriers in the region, Zhang defended India and China having more carriers since they have vast coasts and huge populations and the importance of defending the sea lanes far from home due to dependence on external trade.
Last year China has launched its first aircraft carrier, Lioning. Its hull was imported from Ukraine and refurbished in China.

China also subsequently launched J-15 aircraft to operate from its deck. The ship with over 50,000 tonnes displacement will have about 30 aircraft on its deck. China is reportedly building two more aircraft carriers but their schedules are not known yet.
Zhang earlier told the state-run China Daily that with Vikrant, the Indian Navy will be more capable of patrolling distant oceans.
"India's first self-made carrier, along with reinforced naval strength, will further disrupt the military balance in South Asia," he said.

India is very likely to quicken its pace to steer eastward to the Pacific, where the US and China are competing to dominate.
The launch of the Vikrant as well as the first nuclear submarine Arihant also aroused the curiosityand concerns among analysts from different state-run thinktanks in China. "The new indigenous carrier will further strengthen India's naval power and also add some bargaining chips with the world's major military vendors such as Russia," Wang Daguang, a researcher of military equipment based in Beijing said.
