North Korean hackers suspected in India space agency cyberattack


Nov. 7 (UPI) -- North Korean hackers are suspected to have been behind an attack on India's space agency in September, when India's Chandrayaan-2 mission ended in failure.

The Indian Space Research Organization may have also been warned of the cyberattack, cybersecurity consultants said, according to the Financial Times.

The connection between the failed Chandrayaan-2 mission and North Korean hackers is being made less than a month after India's Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu may have come under North Korean attack, according to a South Korean intelligence organization, Issuemakers Lab.

North Korea's suspected involvement in the cyberattack, which may have begun when people opened phishing emails, releasing malware into their systems, is being downplayed among Indian space authorities.

"Our systems were not compromised and our systems were not affected," said an official at the space agency.

North Korea has previously been tied to breaches at South Korea's financial institutions and nuclear power plants.

Pyongyang's suspected illegal cyber activities are taking place at a time when it has turned down talks with Seoul, and warned the South Korean government against "reckless military moves."

South Korea and the United States are conducting combined air training, Vigilant Ace, this week, Voice of America reported.

David Eastburn, the Pentagon's spokesman for East Asia, said the training would not be adjusted or scaled according to North Korea's demands, the report said.

The United States continues to seek the final and fully verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, but North Korea has not signaled a willingness to give up nuclear weapons.

Pyongyang also continues to produce anti-personnel landmines, according to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, VOA reported Thursday.

Hans Brattskar said North Korea is one of 11 countries producing landmines. The country has been deploying new mines in the past five years, according to the report.

Is it possible for us to automate(for example,with AI ) the final part of the rover landing?

Bcuz,imo Any issues related with human error or comm blackouts could be mitigated with such systems I guess...

Well!! IMO, it is such even with the Chandrayan 2.
The whole thing was pre programmed and automated .
The issue here was a logical failure in the instruction set was the velocity which deviated from what was planned.

Comm black out happened in this case post the crash landing..

I know that we have pre-programmed spacecrafts with censors which react as per situation faced. Now I don't know whether this FOR-ELSE function can be dubbed as artificial intelligence or not.

Yes I did. So, Chandrayaan-2 didn't tilt or got transmitters damaged, it was broken into pieces after impact immediately.

A Chennai-based engineer has been credited by NASA for alerting them about the presence of the debris of the lander of Chandrayaan 2, India's ambitious moon mission. Shanmuga Subramanian, 33, found the debris from the Vikram moon lander that scientists had been looking for and helped guide them to the spot where it had crashed.

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had lost contact with the lander Vikram following its launch from Chandraayan 2 moon orbiter on September 6 when it tried to make soft-landing near the moon's south pole.

The US space agency made the announcement today, releasing an image taken by its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) that showed the site of the spacecraft's impact (September 6 in India and September 7 in the US).

"The debris first located by Shanmuga is about 750 meters northwest of the main crash site and was a single bright pixel identification in that first mosaic," NASA said in a statement.

Chandrayaan 2: NASA released images that shows lander Vikram's site of impact.

The lander had lost contact shortly before the scheduled attempt to soft-land on the moon on September 7. Days after the failed landing, ISRO said it had located the lander, but hadn't been able to establish communication.

NASA said it released a mosaic image of the site on September 26 (but taken on September 17), inviting the public to compare it with images of the same area before the crash to find signs of the lander.

Mr Subramaniam was first person to come up with a positive identification. He said NASA's inability to find the lander on its own had sparked his interest.

"I had side-by-side comparison of those two images on two of my laptops... on one side there was the old image, and another side there was the new image released by NASA," he told news agency AFP, adding he was helped by fellow Twitter and Reddit users.

"It was quite hard, but (I) spent some effort," said the self-professed space nerd, finally announcing his discovery on Twitter on October 3.

NASA then performed additional searches in the area and officially announced the finding almost two months later.

"I worked hard tracking the intended path of Vikram lander," Mr Subramanian told NDTV. "I am excited. It was lots of hard work. I've always had a passion for space science. I would never miss a launch," the space enthusiast said.

A top NASA scientist said Mr Subramanian's work was completely independent. "The story of this really amazing individual (who) found it, helped us find it, is really awesome," NASA's Noah Petro told news agency IANS.

He said that Subramanian "is totally indpendent of the LRO, totally independent of the Chandraayan 2 team, just someone who is very interested in the Chandraayan 2 mission (who) used our data and identified a spot where there was a change that we had not identified".

"He went through the image, looking pixel by pixel and found that spot," Mr Petro added.

India had expected to make space history with the Rs. 1,000-crore Chandrayaan 2 mission.

A successful soft landing on the moon's surface would have made the country only the fourth - after the United States, Russia and China - to achieve the feat. It would also have made India the first country to complete a soft landing near the South Pole on its first attempt.

So ISRO knew that it was hard landing and debry has fallen all over the place but in parallel they were trying to communicate for about ~2 weeks using dsn network. I think ISRO needs to be more transparent what they thought was recoverable after hard landing.

Programming a spacecraft does not require Artificial Intelligence. It does however require sound computational implementation of mathematics -- particularly in the areas of mechanics.

That's why ISRO didn't release pics.. of the crash landing..even though ISRO orbiter has a much better camera resolution of 32 cm...
