Trial run of train conducted on Western Dedicated Freight Corridor
By Press Trust of India | New Delhi | Last Updated at December 30 2018 23:55 IST

A trial run of a freight train on the newly-completed 306-km-long section, from Madar in Rajasthan to Kishangarh Balawas in Haryana, of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) was carried out at the New Sakhun railway station on Sunday, a statement from the DFCCIL said.

This formed part of the first phase (Phase I) of the Western Corridor of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL), it added.

The section has nine newly-built freight stations consisting of six crossing stations (Dabla, Bhagega, Sri Madhopur, Pachar Malikpur, Sakhun and Kishangarh) and three junction stations (Rewari, Ateli and Phulera).

The 306-km-long section is located in Rewari and Mahendragarh districts of Haryana and Jaipur district of Rajasthan and contains 15 major and 271 minor bridges, four Rail Fly Overs (RFOs) and 177 Road Under Bridges (RUBs).

The section is equipped for heavy haul train operation with a 25-ton axle load for the first time in India (currently practised only in the US, Canada, Brazil, Australia, China, Russia, South Africa and Sweden-Norway).

There is also a provision for a Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS) for safe and efficient operation. The section is equipped for four-aspect automatic colour light signalling on the entire route with inter-signal spacing of two kms.

New UDAY Express rolls out soon! Indian Railways to introduce luxury double-decker train; details here
Indian Railways is all set to roll out a new UDAY Express or the Utkrisht Double-Decker Air-conditioned Yatri Express train in February.

Indian Railways introduced its first UDAY Express train last year between Coimbatore and Bengaluru.
New UDAY Express train to be rolled out soon! Aiming to provide better travel comfort to business travellers, Indian Railways is all set to roll out a new UDAY Express or the Utkrisht Double-Decker Air-conditioned Yatri Express train in February. The new all air-conditioned double-decker chair car train is being manufactured by Rail Coach Factory (RCF) Kapurthala. “The work on shells of the double-decker train is underway, some coaches are already being painted and the furnishing work will start soon,” an RCF official told Financial Express Online. “We are hoping to get the new UDAY Express train ready by February,” the official added.

Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways introduced its first UDAY Express train last year between Coimbatore and Bengaluru. The key difference between the new UDAY Express train and the 2018 version is that the latter was introduced after refurbishing an existing double-decker rake. The new UDAY Express train is being manufactured from scratch at RCF, instead of upgrading an old rake. The ‘luxury’ UDAY Express train will offer a comfortable option to business travellers, feels Indian Railways. This double-decker train service was first announced in Railway Budget 2016.

According to the RCF official quoted above, every third coach of the double-decker UDAY Express will have a dining area which will also boast of a food/snacks and coffee vending machine. While coaches of UDAY Express will be able seat up to 120 passengers, those with the dining area will have a capacity of 104 passengers. The new UDAY Express train will have an orange and yellow exterior, similar to that of the Tejas Express.

Salient features of the new UDAY Express:

  • Anti-graffiti vinyl-wrapped exterior
  • Shatabdi-style comfortable seats
  • Automatic sliding doors connecting coaches
  • Food and coffee vending machines in dedicated dining areas
  • Modular bio-toilets
  • Vinyl wrapping on the interior paneling
  • LCD screens for passenger information
  • Onboard WiFi and infotainment facility
New UDAY Express routes:

Apart from the Coimbatore-Bengaluru service, Indian Railways has already announced two other routes for the UDAY Express. These are; Bandra (T)-Jamnagar-Bandra (T) and Visakhapatnam-Vijayawada-Visakhapatnam. However, the final decision on the route of the new UDAY Express will be taken by the Railway Board.

Trains with Roof Ceilings to Experience Northeast India’s Scenic Beauty

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has instructed railway authorities to introduce vistadome coaches in trains running in routes including in the Northeast with bountiful scenic beauty. The instructions were issued during a review meeting at NF Railway, as mentioned in a statement issued by the NF Railway, while adding that the Union Minister stated that such coaches, which offer a sky view of the surroundings would add value to rail travel and help travellers truly enjoy the scenic beauty that Northeast India is famous for. It may be mentioned that, Northeast Frontier Railway has already introduced a vistadome coach in the UNESCO World Heritage Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. This has become immensely popular amongst tourists. The vistadome coaches in DHR also boast of other features like automatic sliding compartment doors, multiple television screens providing infotainment to passengers; wide side door for Divyangs, GPS based info system, LED lights and more. In Lumding – Badarpur hill section, Kumarghat – Agartala hill section, certain sections of upper Assam, Dooars portion of north Bengal are areas of great scenic beauty. These sections would be chosen for introduction of vistadome coaches. Vistadome coaches are designed to let the passengers enjoy the beautiful sceneries through an all glass roof. This would help boost tourism in Northeast India and will attract tourists from both within and outside the country.

Lumding – Badarpur hill section
They should start the Hill Queen express for this. It would be an additional attraction. Apart from this the reinstatement of metre gauge track from Lumding to Lower Haflong would be something to go with with heritage tag.

certain sections of upper Assam
The tea estates and riverine is not going to help much. But the same concept in Rangia- Naharlagun could work wonder.

Kumarghat – Agartala hill section
Hmmm.............. It would be just like travelling through Chambal with all the bamboo and Rubber vegetation around.

Indian Railways gets first ‘Make in India’ electric locomotive with regenerative braking; what’s special
By: Nikita Prasad | Updated: February 10, 2019 11:09 PM
Meanwhile, under the Make in India initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch three big Indian Railways projects this month.

Indian Railways’ “first” electric locomotive with a regenerative system: Historical ‘Make In India’ project flagged off for Indian Railways! The country’s first electric locomotive with a regenerative system has been developed by PSU BHEL for Indian Railways has been flagged off from its Jhansi plant. The state-run organization BHEL has developed the state-of-the-art regeneration system through in-house R&D efforts for the railway network’s fleet of conventional electric locomotives, according to a recent PTI report. The regenerative technology helps avoid loss of heat energy when the brakes are applied and also feeds the energy back to the overhead power lines.

The concept of developing the energy-efficient regeneration system was proposed by the Railway Ministry. Further, BHEL responded to the national transporter by successfully developing the technology in-house, thus giving an impetus to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. The country’s first such regenerative 5,000 HP WAG-7 electric locomotive was flagged off from the company’s Jhansi plant.

Presently the electric locomotives in India have a dynamic braking system where the energy generated during the application of brakes gets wasted in the form of heat. According to a tweet shared by the Ministry of Railways, this regenerative braking system in conventional DC (direct current) locomotive has been developed for the first time in the history of worldwide traction. Indian Railways along with BHEL had undertaken this project of modifying its WAG7 locomotive. The project being a ‘Make in India’ initiative, will lead to a cost saving of Rs 25 lakh per locomotive per year.

Meanwhile, under the Make in India initiative, Prime Minister Narendra Modiis set to launch three big Indian Railways projects this month. Vande Bharat Express or Train 18, is India’s first engineless, fastest self-propelled train will be flagged off from New Delhi Railway Station. PM Modi will also flag off Indian Railways’ first-ever converted-locomotive in a major event at Varanasi. The diesel locomotive has been converted into electric traction during its midlife rehabilitation, for the first time. Lastly, he will lay the foundation stone for the 17 km long new broad gauge railway line connecting Rameshwaram and Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu.
