Two training ships, two fast attacking crafts and a helicopter took part in an exercise on the Arabian Sea off Kochi on Friday.

Frigates of the Indian Navy, INS Krishna and INS Tir, its crafts INFAC Kabra and INFAC Kalpeni and helicopter Chetak, together displayed search and rescue operations and provided an opportunity for the Navy trainees and civilians to watch manoeuvres of ships at close quarters.

The two frigates that carried 24 Indian Navy female trainees, 42 journalists and seven government officials on board, displayed their operations nearly 10 nautical miles away from the shores, with clear blue skies and calm seas.

Among the manoeuvres were search and rescue operations including deck landing practice by the Chetak helicopter. Boarding exercises, followed by jackstay, a seamanship evolution carried out in very close proximity to enable transfer of stores and personnel from one ship to another, excited onlookers.

Commanders of the ships said the exercise was to ensure battle preparedness of the ships in case of any eventuality.

Commander Navendu Saxena emphasised the Indian Navy was capable of defending ships from any attacks by Somalian pirates.

Indian Navy to procure 3D radars for warships


NEW DELHI (PTI): Aiming to provide a 360 degree surveillance capability to warships, the Indian Navy is planning to induct state-of-the-art three dimensional (3D) radars for detecting enemy aircraft, helicopters and sea-skimming missiles.

"We are considering induction of 3D air surveillance radars for warships above 3,000 tonnes to detect aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and missiles," Navy officials told PTI here.

They said the radar would also be required to automatically track in three dimensions including range, height and direction.

In a global Request for Information (RFI) issued by the Navy, it has asked the global manufacturers to provide details of the ranges at which they can track enemy fighter aircraft, helicopters and anti-ship missiles.

The Navy wants the radar to be compatible with the latest combat management systems used by it.

The DRDO has already developed a three dimensional radar named Central Acquisition Radar (3D-CAR) for use with the Akash Surface to Air missile system, which is capable of tracking 150 targets.

The DRDO has also developed the maritime version of the 3D radar which is called 'Revathi'.

PUNE: The Research and Development Establishment (R&DE) at Dighi near Pune is working on a prestigious project to develop the country's first indigenously made glass fibre composite sonar domes for Indian navy's 15 Alpha class warships.

Sonar domes, which are located on the hulls of submarines and surface ships, are a key component that house electronic equipment used for detection, navigation, and ranging. They are particularly useful in anti-submarine warfare.

Navy officials said they were salvaging the vessel at the naval dockyard and the process would continue over the next few days. They will decide whether to decommission it or refit the vessel only after it has been salvaged."We have started the salvage operation to lift INS Vindhyagiri out of water," said Narendra Vispute, assistant public relations officer, Defence. Warship delay not linked to Mazagon dock upgrade, says Antony


There is a delay in the modernisation of Mumbai-based Mazagon Docks Limited (MDL) and the construction of warships there but the two issues are not linked, Defence Minister AK Antony said on Wednesday.

"There have been initial delays in modernisation programme of MDL. However, the delay in modernisation programme has not contributed directly to the delay in ongoing warship construction projects," Antony said in the Rajya Sabha.

The MDL modernisation was launched in 2009 at a cost of Rs8.26 billion and was scheduled to be completed in 2011
